Rebecca Soni finished with a flourish to deny Leisel Jones in the women's 200m breaststroke final in Beijing on Friday.

The American produced a brilliant display - breaking the world record of the Australian runner-up in the process.

And Soni's win was all the more impressive given the fact that she was only substituted in to the event after Jessica Hardy failed a drugs test.

Jones won the 100m event and led at halfway, but Soni picked up the pace with 75 metres to go and left Jones well adrift as she touched the wall in 2 minutes 20.22 seconds.

On the win, Soni said: "It feels great. I can't believe what just happened. I've won a gold medal. It has been a long road to get here.

"I turned (at the 150m mark) and realised I was first. I knew I had a little bit left in me, so I tried to stay relaxed and strong.

"It just flowed. I tried to keep my stroke strong. It's something I've been working on through the trials."

The 21-year old adds gold to the silver medal she picked up in the 100m breaststroke on Tuesday, her world record becoming the 19th of the games thus far.
