Great Britain's hopes of an Olympic tennis medal were rubbed out as Andy and Jamie Murray were given a 6-1 6-3 thrashing by French duo Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra.
A sluggish Murray lost his opening match in the singles to virtual unknown Lu Yen-Hsun from Taiwan, despite arriving in Beijing on the back of a fine Masters win in Cincinnati.
Maybe the effects of the travelling and the amount of tennis he has played recently badly affected him for that loss.
Later the same day he had to come out and play again and his brother Jamie had to coax him through their opening doubles match.
They were far from fluent but showed good heart to beat Canada's number-one ranked doubles player Daniel Nestor and his partner Frederic Niemeyer 4-6 6-3 6-4.
Outplayed
However, in the second round they found Clement and Llodra on a different level and they could never get a foothold in the game.
The French duo had few problems getting rid of the Murrays in just 66 minutes, and now Andy must try and rest and recover to raise his game in time for the upcoming US Open.
"Sometimes you come off after matches and you played well but the other guy just played better than you," said Andy Murray.
"But today, we really didn't give ourselves much of a chance. We didn't play particularly well.
"I don't think we had a break point the whole match. Even though we didn't serve our best, we didn't have any chances on our return game either."
Bad day
His brother Jamie agreed: "We just didn't play a good match right from the start.
"Those guys came out with some big returns and served very well and didn't give us any chances.
"It was just a bad day at the office. They punished us."
