Paul Goodison recovered from a poor start to finish sixth in the Laser class at the Olympic sailing regatta as fellow British hope Penny Clark ended the day in a disappointing ninth place.
Goodison, 30, who was fourth in Athens and won the Olympic test event last year, struggled home in 15th place in his opening race, over three-and-a-half minutes behind winner Julio Asogaray of Argentina.
Things appeared to be going no better for the Briton in the second race, when he reached the second mark in 13th place but he clawed his way back to move up to fourth at the end of the third leg and second by the fourth mark.
He eventually finished 11 seconds behind France's Jean Baptiste Bernaz with Diego Romero of Italy nearly a minute adrift in third place.
Goodison has 17 points from his two races, 10 behind New Zealand's Andrew Murdoch who leads the standings after placing second and fifth in his first two races.
After finishing second in her opening race in the Laser Radial class, Clark ended the day in ninth after a disappointing 22nd place in race two.
Protest
The 33-year-old Royal Navy officer, a bronze medallist at the Olympic test event in Qingdao in 2006, began the regatta well by coming home 33 seconds behind Belgium's Evi Van Acker.
But she was unable to get out of the fleet in the second race and was over two minutes behind France's Sarah Steyaert at the finish.
Anna Tunnicliffe of the United States leads the overall standings with nine points after placing fourth and fifth with Belgium Evi Van Acker in second place, two points behind.
Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark began the day in 15th place in the women's 470 after a protest by Slovenia was upheld by the jury resulting in a disqualification for the British team from Monday's opening race.
But the British pair recovered well, taking third place in race three and fourth in race four to move up to eighth in the overall standings.
The Australian crew of Elise Rechichi and Tessa Parkinson have an eight-point lead over Spain after finishing fourth and first in the two races today.
Solid
In the men's 470, Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield climbed from 10th to fifth after a pair of solid performances.
The Athens silver medallists claimed a 10-second victory over Sweden in race three and were fourth in race four as they put a disappointing first day firmly behind them.
The British pair have 29 points, 12 behind the leading Australian pair of Nathan Wilmot and Malcolm Page.
Nick Dempsey climbed up from ninth to fifth in the RS:X men's category after finishing third and second in his two races.
The Athens bronze medallist has 25 points and still has plenty of ground to make up on Israel's Shahar Zubari, who leads the standings with eight points after winning two of the first four races.
However it was not all good news for Team GB as Bryony Shaw dropped from third to fifth in the RS:X women's standings after finishing 11th and sixth in her two races.
