Germany's Jan Frodeno claimed the Olympic triathlon title in a thrilling sprint finish as Great Britain's medal hopes faded in the closing stages.

Alistair Brownlee had been in contention from the start and led the race with around 3km of the final run phase to go but was run out of the medals on the final lap.

He finished 12th, 86 seconds behind Frodeno, who surged past Canada's Simon Whitfield in the home straight to take gold in a time of 1hr 48mins 53secs.

Whitfield, who looked to have missed out on a medal when he dropped away from his three fellow leaders with around 1km remaining, had led coming into the finish area after responding superbly.

Silver

However, he had to settle for silver in the end with New Zealand's Bevan Docherty taking the bronze.

Francisco Javier Gomez, the world champion, was fourth, just ahead of Spanish team-mate Ivan Rana.

Will Clarke was the second Briton home, just 12secs behind Brownlee in 14th position.

New Zealand's Shane Reed had led after the swim, but Dirk Bochel, of Luxembourg, and Belgium's Axel Zeebroek took control with a fine attack during the 40km cycle.

However, the Benelux pair's running wasn't up to scratch and Brownlee led the chase and quickly reeled them in.

It wasn't to be for the Briton though and instead it was glory for Germany and Frodeno.

Britain's third competitor Tim Don struggled with a sickness similar to that suffered by female team-mate Hollie Avil the previous day and was lapped during the run, so did not complete the course.
