Jamaica's Melaine Walker set a new Olympic record when winning the women's 400m hurdles, where fast-finishing Briton Tasha Danvers won a surprise bronze.

Walker clocked a new Games record of 52.64 when claiming gold, breaking the previous best of Athens winner Fani Halkia of Greece.

American Sheena Tosta just about came home in second place to grab the silver, just a tenth of a second ahead of Team GB's fast-finishing Danvers.

Danvers came home in a new personal best time of 53.84 - 0.18 seconds quicker than her previous best.

Mentality

"I watched that TV programme on Colin Jackson called Nature or Nurture and it showed how strong Colin was mentally, especially after the Barcelona Olympics, and how no matter what happened he had to be so mentally strong, to get back and do so well in the following years," said Danvers.

"I had to remember 'Do not give up on yourself' mentally, at least if you're mentally able to stay on top of it you never know what you can do.

"I did the training, the proof is in the pudding and I managed to put it together at the right time so I am so happy."

It was a third athletics medal for Great Britain so far, with Germaine Mason winning a surprise silver in the high jump while Christine Ohuruogu taking the 400m gold.
