If you are good enough you are good enough! With sponsorship and prizes are athletes are hardly amateur. I doubt Paula Radcliffe and co are struggling for a few quid. The motivation comes from the status of the olympics not from whether it is a major etc. All human beings are drawn towards the olympics if you win a gold you should be the best in your sport, not thinking i only one because he/she wasnt competing.

Definately let the professionals play. The Olympics are meant to be testing the sporting prowess of all the nations in the world against each other, so let them. Pretty much every event has professional athletes, why make one rule for one sport, and another for another? Seeing the biggest football, tennis, basketball, golf, cricket and rugby stars line up alongside the best athletics, swimming, cycling, gymnastics etc., all fighting for the same cause, would be phenomenal.

The Olympics should be amateur and for amateurs only - these big money footballers and basketballers should step aside and let the proper athletes have their day in the limelight.
