Chris Hoy - what can we say. My wife and I are probably as proud as Chris himself about his continuing success. As a young man he was great in BMX, he wanted to get into - what he called - Proper bike racing - he phoned us at our Orbit bike factory in Stourbridge and for about three years we loaned him special hand built bikes so consider we were responsible in no small way for all his successes, not just the last, fantastic, THREE GOLD MEDALS

Chris Hoy and all the gold medal winners as well as the silver and bronze winners deserve all the attention. You need to look at the competion from around the globe to understand that as well as the great sporting nations third world countries are producing world class athletes its easy to critisies why not just enjoy, is that what the olympic ideal is all about. You will never stop the media bias and that is not just our country its human nature. By the way I am english.

The thing with Phelps is that he competes in 2 races of equal length: 100 and 200 metres. He gets his golds by swimming each in different ways (Butterfly, freestyle, relay, etc). Imagine if Usain Bolt could run the 100 and 200, say, backward or on 1 leg etc .. he too would prob come away with 8 golds too. Where does that put Chris Hoy in this arguement .. I don't know.

I totally agree with Eddie Gouther; one of the few who has talked complete sense instead of choosing to have a minor rant at others'expense. Hoy and Addlington et al are phenominal and deserve every plaudit. Redgrave is another story - he is an Olympic legend... Anyone who achieved in any sport in these games is immense in my book irrespective of funding etc. You still have to beat the competition!!!

Well done team GB getting closer and closer to that elusive 20 gold medals and as many of your readers have noted that's without a powerful athletics performance. As a Scot I am especially proud of Chris and his achievements speak for themselves but when was the last time the team came home with almost 20 golds? I dont remember being as interested or enjoying an olympics so such since the days of Thompson, Ovett and Co, and a big well done to the lottery sports fund, if we keep making the improvement we have in the past 8 years you have to say it's money well spent. Every other top nation invests in sport and we rely on the lottery to support our top athletes, lets see more partnerships in facilities an maybe we will see all of our sports men and women competing at the top level year after year, now would'nt that be a GB achievement. Bristish Gas have recorded half year profits that dwarf the money these athletes have had invested in them over 8 years and I know what makes me feel warmer inside!! Well done Team GB, everyone of you.

The cycling acheivements are great, as are all the other medals. Everybody had to work extremely hard - regardless of amounts of money spent on a particular sport, and it is the dedication and commitment that shows through in the end. I am sick of people who cannot celebrate British success for what it is. Cycling did not get there over night - it took ten years! And let's not forget all the other Brits who did extremely well!

The beijing Olympics 2008 is all about Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt, what outstanding results, congratulations to both of you. Remember the GB Cycling team had £22.2 million spent on them, they had the very best of everything i.e. training, top coaches, the best physiotherapists, the highest high tech equipment and the best nuitrition, so they should of got gold. The African countries have very little support and help with finance so they do extremely.

Well done the girls and boys in the cycling, arise SirChris and the others, it`s about time that some of our sports apart from athletics (who did not do us very proud) get recognition for all their hard work that they put in despite bad weather at times. Make cycling on the roads safer for children and give them lessons, and who knows what 2012 and later Olympics will bring.

Having been a mad-keen cyclist as a kid, when the sport was a 'nothing' in the UK, it gives me immense pleasure to see it now achieve the status and recognition it truly deserves. Well done to the cycling federation, City of Manchester and all our cycling heroes that have achieved so much in this unbelievable year. Let's build on this and remember 'drivers'; when you're out on the roads, keep a sharp eye out for cyclists and give them room, they need our roads to train on. Having been involved in a few nasty cycling accidents here and on the continient, due to the attitude of some drivers, I personally take the greatest care when navigating around anyone on two wheels, regardless. Chris Hoy may not rank as the all time most successful British Olympian, I think that honour may go to Steve Redgrave, purely form the point that he achieved it in 5 different Olympics, a remarkable feat. However to win 3 gold medals at one oylmpic games is an astonishing achievement, one which should be celebrated and acknowleged by everyone in the country. If that means a knighthood then so be it, but I dont think that would be of any great importance to Chris Hoy. We have this in built ability in the UK, where everything has to put in order. Why should we spend time even debating, which athlete is more successful than the other. Let's just enjoy the and celebrate the SUCCESS of all our competitors who manage to bring home a gold medal. in the name of our Country. There doesnt need to be a pecking order!!!!!

Without any doubt the UK sportsman of the year should be Chris Hoy, reward for the 3 golds plus his dedication over many years at top level, is he not in his thirties? and so he is likely to be at his absolute peak, and maybe he will not repeat 3 golds in 4 years time. The UK sportswoman of the year should be Nicole Cook, as she resisted riding traditional big cycle races in Europe to target a single race all year - the olympic road race - and then actually deliver the gold. And hopefully later this year she will be world champion. Ms Adlington, while winning 2 swimming golds at 19, is in her early years, and hopefully will win 3 or more golds in 4 years time. So, I dont consider it correct that she is above Nicole Cook, if anyone has any doubts, then go google Cooke's impressive achievements to date.
