Andrew Balding: On Demand progressing well but needs some rest

On Demand has now had four career runs, and overall I am pleased with how she has progressed.

She has had three runs at Southwell in relatively quick succession, and although she hasn't shaken off her maiden tag yet, you have to be pleased with her development and attitude in her races.

She was unlucky on her second run at Southwell on March 12, she travelled nicely through the race, picked up well when her jockey David Probert asked her to, and was just unlucky to get robbed on the line by an older horse. Even though she didn't finish with her head in front, she showed that she has the ability to go on and win races.

Her most recent race at Southwell on March 26 was disappointing, but I think it is just down to her being tired. As I said, she has had three runs in quick succession, and there just wasn't that much left in the tank.

You have to be pleased with her development and attitude in her races.

Quotes of the week

David said after the race that she was going through the early stages of the race nicely, but when he pushed the button to go she offered nothing. Unfortunately horses don't always let you know this at home, and it is only once they are on the racetrack that they show signs of fatigue.

So next on her agenda is a nice, long holiday. She will be sent to down the road to Highclere Stud, where she will be turned out in the field to freshen up, then she will gradually be brought back to fitness before being sent back to the yard to resume full training.

I will wait and see how she is when she comes back for her break, and we will look to give her a spin on the turf in the coming months.
