Sam Allardyce's return to football is certainly overdue.
I know Sam well and I've a lot of time for him as a man and as a manager. He didn't just jump at the first job going following a tough time at Newcastle and I'm happy to see him back.
I know Blackburn supporters were a bit indifferent when Sam was in the running for the job in the summer and - on top of the connection with their local rivals Bolton - I guess that's in part down to the style of football his Wanderers team played.
Allardyce: Hasn't sat idle
Even though there was method in it, they were very much a long-ball side.
Blackburn are a club who have won the Premier League title, and their fans are used to teams put out by Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Mark Hughes - teams who play an attractive brand of football.
Perhaps the Ewood Park faithful are a tad worried that Sam might change things around and get his centre-halves smashing the ball up the park week-in, week-out.
Make no mistake, if Sam offered the Rovers fans successive finishes of eighth, sixth, eighth and seventh - as he achieved in his final four years at Bolton - they would bite his hand off.

Quotes of the week
But I think Sam knows himself that with the difference in expectation he might perhaps need to modify his style as a manager a little.
And make no mistake, if he offered the Rovers fans successive finishes of eighth, sixth, eighth and seventh - as he achieved in his final four years at Bolton - they would bite his hand off.
There's no escaping the fact he has a job on his hands, but Sam will not have sat idle during his 11 months out of the game: he'll have been looking at players and I've no doubt he'll have a dossier ready to present to the chairman John WIlliams on day one.
Top of that list might be a centre-half - as a former defender himself Sam's priority will be to shore up a back line which has conceded 34 league goals - and it wouldn't surprise me if he went for a central midfielder too.
If he can keep hold of Roque Santa Cruz there might be enough striking talent at the club already: Benni McCarthy, Jason Roberts and young Matt Derbyshire are all decent.
They're a bit detached at the minute - a five-point gap to safety looks big in such a tight league - and Sam must deliver a win quickly. Saturday's visit of Stoke is a perfect opportunity. It won't be easy, but it's the type of game Blackburn need to win between now and May if they are going to stay up.
Decision time
We'll have to wait and see what happens to Paul Ince now, and it's up to him to decide whether he wants to stay in the game. He wouldn't be the first big-name player to turn his back on management having had his fingers burned.
But Paul will know he's in a results business, and there are managers with far more experience who have been treated far more ruthlessly - Peter Reid was sacked after nine games of the 2002/2003 season having taken Sunderland to unbelievable heights.
I'd like to think he's made of strong stuff, and I'd be surprised if he walked away altogether, especially if he does want to make a point as the first really successful black manager in England.
He may have to drop down to the Championship to rebuild his career, and I'm sure he'd be in demand further down the league after what he achieved with Macclesfield and MK Dons. Whether he'd want to return to quite that level having sampled life at the top, I don't know.

Harry Redknapp said recently that a big club will go down this year. Well, that club will be Blackburn with or without Sam I'm afraid. With everybody beating everybody in the league this year, it will be more difficult for Rovers to climb out of trouble. The teams around them are all picking up wins on a regular basis, apart from Man City, but we all know they won't be going down following the transfer window shopping spree.

I have never been so happy about an appointment since we signed Kenny Dalglish. Big Sam is exactly what Blackburn need and should of been offered the job in the summer. One thing I have to dissagree with is that some of the footy dished out by Kenny Dalglish was pretty awful especially towards the end of his reign. Therefore I don't feel that big Sam's style of football will be too much of a culture shock to the fans. As for Bolton, I don't know where all of this hatred towards Blackburn comes from. The fixture has always been a bit niggly but I have always wished for Bolton (and Wigan) to do well in the Premier League. We dislike the dingles (and that's the original dingles) and the red half of Manchester..

First of all I wecome'Big Sam' with open arms. He really is the perfect man for the job. I'm not sure what planet those Rovers fan's are on when they are worried about Sam's teams' long ball playing style. I enjoyed Bolton beating the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United and wasn't concerned about 'style'. As for him managing a 'rival' club in Bolton. What's all that about? Bolton have never been our rivals. As a Rovers fan for 40 years they don't come onto the radar or matter that much. They are in the Preston, Blackpool and Wigan category. We know who our rivals are, it's that lot from down the M65 who must be sick that we've captured 'Big Sam'!! As for Tony Adams and Tony Pullis criticising the sacking of Paul Ince that's just fear. Now they know there are two relegation places up for grabs again ( sorry but West Brom are going down) and their clubs could fill either one of them. Let's get down to Ewood on Saturday and get behind the Rovers. I'd like nothing better than Ryan Nelson to launch a long ball, Roque to head it down and David Dunn to crash it past a stationary Stoke keeper. Bring it on!!!!

Big Sam is an important and well chosen replacement for an unlucky and ill-advised Paul Ince. I'm backing him to do well and to get us safe this season. I wish Paul Ince luck and success in the future, I'm sure he will be a fine manager as long as he chooses the right back room staff. As for the Bolton fans, Bolton are not really on our radar all that much but I bet your lot will be from now on. Good luck, I hope you finish below us but I wouldn't wish relegation on any fan.

Still can't believe how many people stick up for Fat Sam. The ego is unbelievable and his record at NUFC was shocking. After he was first sacked, he kept quiet but now seems to have a very selective memory regarding his time at NUFC. We lost to Reading and almost twice to Derby, the only team we beat from the top half was Everton( a lucky 3-2) and the only team we played from the big 4 was Liverpool and they hammered us 3-0 at home. His boast that it was our best start for years was solely due to the kindness of the fixture list. With those fixtures under Sir Bobby or KK we would have been top of the league and not 9th. Only sad he didn't get the Sunlan job!

I for one am delighted in the appointment of Big Sam. He's proven himself in the Premier League and with the pressures of a relegation scrap and I believe he's the man to get us out of the bottom three and climbing up the table. As he used to be a defender during his playig days no doubt he'll shore up the back 4 and we'll stop conceding so many goals and hopefully he'll get the forwards working and looking sharp again and mostly get the confidence back into the whole squad and get everyone playing to their max potential. Good luck Big Sam.....Come on Rovers, win on Sat and get the bal rolling for a nice long sequence on decent results.

I'm not sure I'd agree Sam's "The best manager since Sir Alex." But I do respect him as a manager, even though I'm not fond of the type of football his teams play; As a Liverpool fan, Sam's Bolton was never a fixture I looked forward to facing because his team could win games without playing the most attractive football. Sam's the 'Blue Peter' type of football manager - he can take bits of junk lying around and other people's cast-offs and give you Tracy Island (though it may not be the most attractive finished product, it works). I like Sam Allardyce, he's a grafter and that's how his teams play - they graft results. Good luck Blackburn.. I think you've got the right man for the job.

I fully believe Fulham can win the premiership in the next 3 years, they have a quality team.. the likes of Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora can lead the front line, they will at least score 35 goals a season between them or even each this can be done when they start to fit in. With someone like Mark Schwarzer in net no team will even be able to win against the might fulham. Paul Konchesky is just utter amazing we are so blessed we have him, he should be playing for a team like Real Madrid, i believe he plays like R. Carlos who they have never replaced, i think a £30 million pound move may happen in the summer. Fulham!!

Sam is the manager that signed Diorkoff, Campo fro Real Madrid, Gary Speed, Anelka. Put Bolton into europe all with no money!! The elite managers that walk into big clubs and big money wouldn't know where to start. Sam used what resources he had to magnificent effect. Talk to Phil Brown. For me sam is pound for pound the best manager since Sir Alex.God knows what he would do if he was given the billions some managers have access to. Sam simply needs time.He is a footballing genius.Great to have him back. Even I will follow the rovers results!

To be fair results are the key to any fan's heart! Soon as he wins a few games they will forget about the Bolton connection. Football fans are fickle, they like loyalty but know that's unusual in these money-driven times and so will take success any day! I think there's a good chance he will keep them up, they're certainly good enough and with a couple of defensive additions in January they should do it with that squad. If Santa Cruz does go, however, they could be in trouble. I don't think Williams wil sell him unless he gets a ridiculous offer, is it really worth taking £20 million when they will lose £40 million if they go down! I reckon they will have said to him something like: 'We know you're destined for a bigger club, stay til the end of the season and you can go in the summer'. And he seems like a decent enough guy, I think he realises that he does kind of owe Blackburn for the renaissance in his career, and will stay until the end of the season. He should do anyway. In fairness though I hope Blackburn do go, speaking as West Ham fan. Three teams have to and I don't want one of them to be us! West Brom are gone for me, apart from that its so tight! Can't see Newcastle or Man City going down, we need Stoke to bottle it soon! Come on boys, you've had your fun!

It was sad to see Paul go but as Andy said its a results based business. I agree with the Blackburn fans, its time for Blackburn to get back to where they belong fighting for a top four/six finish. Good luck Sam, hope it goes well and use your impact players to their strengths, your an attacking team, be attacking.

As a season ticket holder; the last 4 months have been very hard to take. There has been a very flat atmosphere around the ground since the Paul Ince appointment. I feel terribly sorry for Paul Ince, with no top flight experience and the massive task of following Mark Hughes, who in my opinion is the best manager that our club has had in the premier league years....so far. However, there is no doubt that the board had to act quickly; our premiership status is bigger and more important than anyone or anything. As for Sam Allardyce; his record speaks for itself. Thank you to Newcastle United for making an awful mistake and losing out on the 'Harry Redknapp of the North.' It's still going to be a long, hard season for the fans and we have to accept that Sam's priority is to come in and sure up our defensive play. If this is the way to survival, then so be it! I am ironing the Blue and White shirt as we speak; eagerly in anticipation of wearing it with pride on Saturday in full support of the Manager, Players and board. I wish Sam all the best!

Once again the Legend - Andy Gray - has nailed it on the head, as a rovers fan I can state that few of us wanted Sam Allardyce as Blackburn manager back in June and this wasn't down to his Bolton connections, it was mainly down to the style of football. When Allardyce brought Newcastle to Ewood Park I was horrified (like many of the Geordies) to see Bolton Wanderers in a Newcastle United wrapper, a huge change from the free-flowing (negating the defence!) attacking football we're use to seeing. Now, though, I don't think there is a better man for the job at hand and I welcome the possibility of poor and scrappy football if it gets us results. I'd heard Laudrup's name being mentioned as a contender but I'd much prefer an experienced premier league manager, for a second my heart stopped when I saw Steve McClown's name on the list...roll out the red carpet for Big Sam before McClaren takes serious interest! Just a word on Paul Ince, he wanted to play attractive, attacking football but it left us too open at the back. After 6 straight defeats and 11 games without a win, I think it was the right decision to let him go. Especially as Ince stated he would not change his tactics and resort to winning "ugly", he needed to admit his style of football wasn't suited to a club like Rovers. It probably would work with clubs that have big squads full of world class players like the big four and maybe Villa. I don't think the board sacked Ince too hastily and I'd like to hear from all those that say otherwise when their clubs are in the same position, 3 months without a win and 6 straight defeats is pushing it at any club and I think Blackburn Rovers are amongst the most patient. Ince had sufficient support and time but it clearly wasn't working. Good luck to him though, hopes he bounces back

Dean Ryan (Bolton Wanderers fan) says...
Any Blackburn fan who still doesn't want Allardyce (despite him being the best choice in the summer too) is really as stupid as us Boltoners know they are. Sam should have got the job in the summer when they needed stability and experience - exactly the same happened to us with Sammy Lee. Luckily we found that experienced man in Megson. Again he is unpopular but probably just what the club needed at the time. I'd describe him as a poor man's Big Sam. I wanted Blackburn to keep Ince, that way they'd go down, but I can't see that happening now that the big man is there. You guys need to get behind him if you want to stay up... yes it will be boring, defensive and direct, but beggers can't be choosers if you want to remain a top flight club, so just be patient and get behind him. I want Sam to do well since he achieved so much for us, but if that means seeing Rovers do well, I'd rather eat my own face. I hope you go down but I can't see it now.

I just pray that Sam is the man, to pull us clear of the mire, I am not to concerned on how he does it as long as he can do it. The team spirit is rock bottom at the moment and we need to strengthen the midfield in the transfer window. Sam came across very positive at his press conference, and lets hope Mr Williams has a few pounds at his disposal to buy in January. I feel sorry it did not work out for Paul, but I wish him well in the future, and you never know, one day he might be back at Blackburn.

Paul Ince will definately be back in football, he never wanted to leave Blackburn. You just have to look at the job he's done with MK Dons, he built that club into such a good one that now in there first season back in League 1 they are currently competing for promotion. No offence to Di Matteo but Ince built the foundations there. In my opinion Ince was very unlucky with injuries to important players like David Dunn. If Dunn was available i think that Blackburn would be higher in the League and Ince would still have his job.

Very dissapointed big sam has taken a job so close to where he made his name. There are lots of us that used to respect his decision to leave for a bigger challenge at a bigger club and felt sorry for the way he was treated at Newcastle. There is a bitter rivalry between bolton n blackburn and sam has jumped in to the fireing line for whenever the two teams meet. He will never get the support from their fans he recieved from us boltonians and due to this i hope they get relegated as it is what there fans deserve.

Spot on Andy, although for the forseeable future all Rovers fans can think about is survival. If we survive then Sam will have the springboard to make next season a possible succesful one in terms of league finish and who knows, maybe a cup??!! I personally am delighted with his appointment. I was in the Pro-Ince camp until the Wigan game when I reluctantly saw that he was not the man to take us forward - possibly his aged backroom staff had something to do with this. Rumours that the players were unhappy with training appear to be on the money. Anyway, it feels like we now have a "big name" in charge and I wish him all the luck in the world. Upwards and onwards!!
