Rooney: star of the show

Rooney: star of the show

GAME - Arsenal 1-3 Man Utd
I was so impressed with the way United destroyed Arsenal. I know Arsenal had strikers missing, which gives them a bit of an out but it doesn't explain such a comprehensive defeat. Arsene Wenger fancied their chances beforehand, but was talking so negatively about his team after the match. For the first time it seems he is resigned to the fact Arsenal aren't going to win the Premier League this year. They have some good fixtures coming up, but I don't think they'll win it.

TEAM - Manchester United
Sir Alex Ferguson has got a system in his head now and it's going to stay that way for the big games. You have Wayne Rooney up front on his own, Darren Fletcher in a marauding role winning balls and the rest of the midfielders are just allowed to go and play. Nani is at last showing the potential that they paid for and they looked awesome; hard to break down and frightening on the break. They showed why Dimitar Berbatov doesn't get a game because they're all about pace and power - and when the play goes into him it slows down. In certain games in Europe he'll be ideal, but you need more pace, vitality and sharpness to win Premier League matches.

PLAYER - Wayne Rooney
There were some good performances this weekend. John Terry did well to come out and perform so well under pressure and I though Nani was very impressive on Sunday. But it has to be Wayne Rooney for his 100th Premier League goal on Sunday. He has matured so much (and he was a great player when he was 16). Seven years down the line he has emerged as an exceptional player who is getting better. Everyone says Man United miss Cristiano Ronaldo, but Rooney doesn't. He is now the focal point of that team, rather than being part of the supporting cast. Sir Alex has told him to be the main man and he has stepped up.

GOAL - Wayne Rooney
There were some good goals in the Premier League this weekend from the likes of Gabriel Agbonlahor and Nicolas Anelka, but again I have to pick Wayne Rooney. His 100th Premier League goal is a landmark, it came at an important moment in the game and it was a fantastic goal on the counter-attack which summed up what United are all about.

GAFFER - Sir Alex Ferguson
I'd like to mention David Moyes whose Everton team have slowly but surely crept back into the hunt without making too many noises. But Gaffer of the Week has to be Sir Alex. He has given his players the perfect system - and we saw it in midweek against Man City and again against Arsenal. There are some games against the likes of Portsmouth, Hull, Burnley, Wolves, Bolton, West Ham or Wigan where United don't need to be at 100mph. The squad players can win those games for them. But in the games against the strong footballing sides, he has established a quick and powerful team.

GRIPE - No gripe this week
I've been impressed with the referees this week, particularly Howard Webb who was exceptional in last Wednesday's Manchester derby. It was a proper derby match with loads of fouls and things going on - but he used common sense and made that game as a good a spectacle as it was in the second half. So I'm praising the officials this week. I'm sure Blackburn fans were upset that Mark Noble's handball on the line wasn't spotted, but I was at the game and on my first look I didn't spot it - and I had a birds-eye view. Replays show it would have gone in the net if it hadn't hit his hand, but I don't blame the referee for missing that one.

IS ROONEY MOST FAB?
Hi Chris. Can you help me and my mate settle a debate? I reckon Wayne Rooney is a certainty for player of the season. He reckons Cesc Fabregas will win it. Who would you pick? Tyrone (Manchester United fan).
KAMMY SAYS:
Tyrone, get as much money together as you can and lump it all on Wayne Rooney to win Football Writers' Player of the Year and PFA Player of the Year. I think he'll do the double. Cesc Fabregas has had a great season and if his main rival was a foreign player in the same form as Rooney then maybe Cesc would come out on top. But Rooney is one of our own and going towards a World Cup we want him to be in the best mental and physical condition. What better fillip could there be than to give him those two awards? He's a certainty in my opinion.

KEN THINGS GET BETTER?
I would just like to say isn't it time Steve Bruce faced facts. He ain't got the X factor at Sunderland, he's virtually ostracised Kenwyne Jones since Darren Bent arrived (nothing against Bent, he's a star) but a manager ought to know how to motivate his players and he's certainly not brought the best out of Jones. Key turning point for me was when Bruce criticised Bent when he allowed Jones to take a penalty (letting Jones know who his no 1 striker was). He's ruined the makings of a good partnership and there were plenty of good moments earlier in the season, his confidence has suffered and Bruce is to blame for plunging us back into a relegation battle again! Good luck to Jones should he be on his way I wouldn't blame him for leaving. Cheers. Quinnysdiscopants.
KAMMY SAYS:
I remember watching Kenwyne Jones when he played for Southampton and he was a one-in-four lad. You watched him three times and he looked slow, disinterested and cumbersome - and that's what he's sometimes like for Sunderland. On other occasions a spark gets lit up in his head and he's unplayable. He doesn't have that consistency yet and maybe his laid-back Caribbean attitude stops him being 100% each week. When he first arrived things were going well and he looked exceptional, but you need to have the mental attitude to pick yourself up when things don't go well.

I'm not convinced it's Steve Bruce's fault either. We had Niall Quinn on Goals on Sunday a few weeks ago (if I had a pound for every Sunderland fan who'd told me how brilliant he was I'd be quite rich) and he gave his manager huge support. Have no fear Sunderland fans, you won't be going down this year. With Niall and Steve in charge things can only go onwards and upwards.

Moh Yousuf (Arsenal fan) says...

Very poor performance indeed - and if we lose or should I say when we lose to chelsea this weekend, that will be the end of arsenal silverware yet again. We gave away the FA cup too easily which was our only realistic hope of silverware. We gave it away to win the league and yet, we won't do that either. I'm getting a rather boring feeling of de ja vu with arsene wenger and his antics - for me, its nothing to do with tactics or defenders going forward or anything like that - that's the way arsenal play - what I have a problem with is the lack of quality, world class talent which is a lot more pressing I feel. If you take out Fabregas, Arshavin, Van Persie (always injured) and perhaps Nasri - there is not a single player that would get into the Manchester United or Chelsea team. That really shows you the extent of the problem. Its sad but true. I have a massive problem with Arsene Wenger being so so so damn stubborn as to not buy a decent striker first and foremost and also a decent defender (Sol Campbell doesn't count) we are also in need of a decent keeper as time and again Almunia doesn't cut the mustard. Wenger has built a thin team, who play and work well together, but have a distinct lack or individual world class talent and clearly not physicality and little grit on the big stage. Moh Yousuf

firstly like to say nani and rooney played very well. don't get me wrong a victory over arsenal is awesome but we didn't dominate as much as everyone thinks. we were very clinical with our finishing but they had some very good chances to score. if they had earlier it could have been a very different game.

Eddie English, easy for you to say where was Rooney against portugal when england needed him, Gerrard and Carragher missed from 12 yards! i'm an Arsenal supporter and not scared to say this time round, Rooney is our nation's main man.

Tommy Nolan (Manchester United fan) says...

Wayne Rooney is form English player at the moment.in the last world cup Sven goran erikkson brought Rooney even though he broke a bone in hid foot & and he brought theo Walcott.what a joke that was.I hope England win the world cup because this time they have a proper manager in charge.Nani is a man utd player now.he is potentially world class if is he isn't already.arsenal will always be ARROGANT,they will never compliment United.all I heard from arsenal pundits was "we were poor",United are a better team and a better club and we outclassed you on Sunday.Wenger complained about referees before the match,if it was SAF who said that he would be punished by the FA.Wenger Is a DISGRACE.Arsenal fans-keep saynig you were poor until Chelsea beat you on Sunday, then you can say it again.man utd are a team of MEN,arsenal are a team of BOYS in their MID-20's.soft touches. LOVE UNITED, HATE LIVERPOOL.UNITED FOR LIFE.

some people are so fickle! after three good games nani is getting tonnes of praise and people saying he can fulfil his potential etc. when about a month ago i saw several stories saying his time was up blah blah blah. for me he has always been a good lad for utd and i wanted to see him given more first team chances. he has scored goals faily regularly when he has played, but he just didn't used to play. give the guy time, who knows how good he could become!

William Long (Manchester United fan) says...

I think Eddie English is a prat. Typical of a Liverpool fan, just because he was an Everton lad and now with United, you cant stand the fact that he is better then all the players in the Liverpool side. Torres & Gerrard are great players, but look at the stats. Gerrard has threatened to leave Liverpool, because they cant win anything and Torres is an accident waiting to happen, and to top all off, he is a little girl. Rooney is probably the best out and out striker in the world at the moment, and he will definately be Player of the year in England and maybe even the world.

can the jealous scouser please shut his mouth go worry bout your own miserable teams dismal performances and let wayne and united get on with what they do best, winning things. we beat two top class teams in a week nuff said

wayne rooney is the best player in the world that is a fact you liverpool fans shouldnt even give your point of view you are neva guna b as big as united torres will b out nxt season wen he relises you aint guna win nothin AGAIN LOL!!

Aaaron Williams (Manchester United fan) says...

i think it will be a two-horse race between manutd and chelsea, but i expect united to win the title and rooney to get pfa player of the year. and a repeat champions league final man.u vs barca. and a special mention for nani he was brilliant sunday now ronaldo gone we will see the real rooney n nani.

Posted 15:01 2nd February 2010

Christopher Henry (Manchester United fan) says...

Eddie english - good to see your patriotic in name only!! I think there's a little bit of liverpool jealousy in that comment! If there was one critcism of ronaldo it was that he was never a big game player, so putting him in the list of big game players is simply wrong, interstingley two liverpool players aswell...I think everyone has been so impressed with rooney this season because he has finally showed what he can do when utilised properly. 21 goals half through a season isn't bad going. And as a united fan when we're playing bad, as we have for most of the season, its rooney who provides the brilliance we need. united last two games were two of the biggest of this season and who was the star man?? Wayne Rooney and yet you say hes 'not a big game player'??? Catch yourself on

Posted 14:56 2nd February 2010

Gerard Mcginley (Liverpool fan) says...

are you's all fer real?? rooney is a good player but a very overrated one. i dont think he'l ever be captain of england if gerrard or lampard are about, never mind jt. he scores a few games in a row and now everyone thinks hes the best player in the world, thats what he's meant to do, plus i think he's be at barca at the summer. fabergas for player of the year, what he does a club with so many young players is unbelivable. bring him to the pool

Posted 14:47 2nd February 2010

Dave Hold (Manchester United fan) says...

Eddie English, what are you on about? Wayne Rooney hasn't produced on the big stage yet? Have you had your head under a rock? He's the best player in the Premier League bar none, and where is your little girl Torres? Injured all the time! Big time player my backside!

Posted 13:20 2nd February 2010

Malcolm Prosser (Manchester United fan) says...

As a united fan i cant see us now dropping points. our belief and passion has returned and with players returning i think chelsea should watch their backs as united do it every season hunting down the big guns. 4th title i think united are about to break yet another record.

Posted 12:34 2nd February 2010

Keith Lunan (Manchester United fan) says...

to Eddie the Liverpool fan where was your so called big players Gerrardd and Torres when your sorry lot were getting dumped out the champs league & fa cup big game when it suits them all english fans should b behind rooney he is englands class act! he may not win us the world cup but he will certainly give it 120%!!!!....

Posted 12:27 2nd February 2010

Reg Ster (Chelsea fan) says...

I think that all of us would like England to win the world cup, i don't think anyone even United and Arsenal fans can deny the leadership qualities that John Terry posseses he is a true leader and inspiration for this reason alone Terry should stay captain, Rooney is class but give him the band and he will feel pressured, we need him encumbered so he has a free reign at goal. As for Gerrard he has to much on his plate with Liverpool to add to his worries. Terry for captain and the World Cup

Posted 12:25 2nd February 2010

Slim Sym (Manchester United fan) says...

bitter Liverpool fan Eddie English what has got to your head ronaldo a big game player not so and roooney was all part of a supporting cast (in those games) yet he did brilliant with his roles. and of cource scored! face it hos the best, his going to be the heart beat of england as he is fo Manutd.

Posted 12:00 2nd February 2010

Josh Dauber (Stoke City fan) says...

i agree with you aswell kammy and i think rooney is the best striker in the world atm!

Posted 11:36 2nd February 2010

Josh Dauber (Stoke City fan) says...

i think kenwyne jones is no were near worth 12 mill i think if he got offerd 8 i wud sell him if i was brucey

Posted 11:33 2nd February 2010

Haruna Gadaf (Manchester United fan) says...

Indeed rooney is a great player, and with contribution from other team mates he will lead them to win the world cup.

Posted 10:47 2nd February 2010

Shaun Davies (Arsenal fan) says...

So in other words Kammy Rooney should win PFA player of the year because he is english and Fabregas isnt? I bet in the summer the big guns at Barca will be making a 50m bid for Fabregas not for media darling Rooney!
