Scotty or Bomber for Nigel

Nigel Pearson Posted 13th June 2010 view comments

What a weekend for British riders... and just in time for the British Final at Wolves on Monday night!

How often do we see a weekend of Grand Prix qualifiers and when the results come through two British riders are on top? Not very often, but that's exactly what happened over the weekend.

Reigning British champion Chris Harris, fresh from a stunning display in Copenhagen at the Danish GP last weekend, won his qualifier (which is for the 2011 series) in Gorican, Croatia, with a 14-point haul. And he beat Slovenian star Matej Zagar in a run-off for top spot.

Nicholls: Up for title

Nicholls: Up for title

And how good was it to see Swindon's Simon Stead come out on top in Italy? I've seen a lot of Simon's career down the last 11-years, right from the moment we both worked at Sheffield, and I've always enjoyed watching him race.

But this season seems to be his best yet and for that a lot of credit must be down to his renewed attitude. No longer does he beat himself up after a bad ride, he just goes out there to enjoy his racing.

I'm not exactly being bold and brave when I say Bomber for the title and Scott Nicholls for the wildcard.

Quotes of the week

So what about the British Final? Two major issues here, the title itself and the wildcard spot for the British Grand Prix at Cardiff.

I'm not exactly being bold and brave when I say Bomber for the title and Scott Nicholls for the wildcard. That seems all too obvious but I expect a scrap right to the end.

Wildcard

Throw Steady into the mix and there is also Eddie Kennett who has enjoyed the Cardiff wildcard for the past two seasons.

And what about the enigma that is Lewis Bridger? The Monmore track is well suited to Coventry's recent recruit, but even Lewis will admit a lot depends on which Lewis Bridger turns up. He would be an outsider for me to pinch the Cardiff wildcard.

Wolverhampton is always an entertaining track and I expect the meeting to provide plenty of entertainment for the fans and Sky Sports viewers.

And as an added attraction, there will be appearances from Miss Black Country and Moley - what more do you want?

It should be a cracking night of racing!
