Giants on the rise

Huddersfield to build on success

Stevo Posted 13th August 2009 view comments

Huddersfield were superb last weekend in beating St Helens and every player played their part in that success.

Giants coach Nathan Brown has really given them that belief that they are a really good side. Not many people beat Saints so convincingly and it was a convincing win. Like Warrington though they need to get the same enthusiasm they showed in the Challenge Cup for this game. Can they do it? Players like fullback and skipper Brett Hodgson, Kevin Brown and Luke Robinson have been outstanding and I think they want to taste even more success.

I am expecting a bumper crowd for this game - if the fans don't show up then they should be ashamed of themselves. They have been moaning about not having much success for years and here they are doing incredibly well and their team need the support of all their fans.

Bradford will bring a few fans too. They were a bit in the doldrums but came up with a good win against Harlequins. Dave Halley scored three tries and will be the danger man against Huddersfield.

Bradford have been a real yo-yo side this season - one week they are hitting the heights and the next they just fall apart.

Quotes of the week

Huddersfield v Bradford
7.00pm, Sunday, Sky Sports 2 & HD2

Bradford will miss Terry Newton who is out with a fractured cheekbone which is a real shame. They will miss him for sure but the Quins game will be his last for the Bulls as he is off to Wakefield next season. I am sure the Bradford fans would have liked to have seen him off in style.

Bradford have been a real yo-yo side this season - one week they are hitting the heights and the next they just fall apart. You are never sure what they are going to produce but maybe the win against Quins has been a turning point for them.

I don't really think they can make the play-offs as they have to rely on too many other results going there way. But there is pride involved here and they will be looking for some inspiration.

Star man

Brett Hodgson (Huddersfield): He has been superb this year and led his team very well. He has grown in confidence and that resounds through the whole team. He is desperate for success and will lead his troops into battle time and time again.

Home win: I think Huddersfield will just have enough. I think they will want to really stamp there authority on this game. They will certainly not want to sour their Challenge Cup semi-final win with a loss in front of their home fans.

What's this, Stevo praising Huddersfield - Surely not. Must have hurt you and your sidekick when the giants got to the final - First time I've heard either of you give us a good word!!!!

I wonder what Stevo`s definition of a "bumper" crowd would be for a Sunday night game on sky ? The Giants fan base has been building steadily now for a good few years and this seasons ticket offer was a massive incentive to come along and support the team which in turn has been rewarded with success on the field. The crowd growth is still a little too slow for my liking, but thats hardly surprising when you consider the club, as Nathan Brown alluded to, has lost two generations of fans and suffered years of life in the wilderness. The Challenge cup semi final victory, will put some extra bums on seats im sure, but thats only another step in the building process. I worry about the fragility of fans if we have any "blips" in form or results and for this particular game i dont share Stevo`s enthusiasm that a Bradford side playing with the inconsistency that Steve McNamaras is at the moment will bring very many fans. Bradford have enough quality in the side to beat Huddersfield, no doubt.....but i dont think they will....and i dont think the Bradford fans think they will either more importantly.....thats a recipe for all but the most diehard of fans to go down the pub and watch....i hope im wrong, but i dont think so.....
