It upsets me a lot to see the England captaincy treated the way it has been in the last week.
It is one of the greatest honours in sport but the whole row between Kevin Pietersen and Peter Moores has certainly cheapened the office.
The ECB's management board have had their noses seriously put out of joint by the way Pietersen has broken ranks and gone public in the News of the World.
Pietersen: flagged up issues
I've never been happy with current players having lucrative newspaper columns - I always think that is a recipe for disaster.
Most of the time they just come out with banal platitudes but when a story breaks like this you think, 'well the ECB are playing Pietersen a lot of money so he should really have gone through the correct channels before breaking a story like this' because that clearly is the volcano that he has set off.
I've never been happy with current players having lucrative newspaper columns - I always think that is a recipe for disaster.
Bob Willis
Quotes of the week
If he does end up losing the captaincy he's played a gambling game and lost; he thought he would get the backing of the team and the media, which as it turns out hasn't happened 100%. In their words, the board always take a dim view of putting things into the public domain.
Cliques
There have been cliques in the England side for a long time, we've known all about that. Duncan Fletcher had his favourites and a clique of players has existed in the England side even since Michael Vaughan's resignation.
Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison as senior players have not been part of that clique and that is why there has not been 100% support form within the team for what Pietersen has been trying to do there. Harmison and Flintoff did not get on with Duncan Fletcher when he was in charge and they probably sympathise with Moores in this mess.
Moving forward, England have a history of keeping former captains in their ranks whereas as soon as someone stops captaining the national side in Australia they are out of the door and never seen again.
England's approach very rarely works satisfactorily but Pietersen is so self-motivated and so keen on becoming the best batsman in Test cricket that I'm sure he could return to the ranks if and when it is necessary.
Defence
In his defence, Pietersen flagged up the problem with Moores before he accepted the job and the two had a meeting about the way the team was going to be run.
Clearly, it hasn't been run the way he wants it to be run. It doesn't matter how many levels of management, how many hangers on in the dressing room - the bottom line is that in cricket the captain runs the show. He has to be happy with how the structure is.
The same must be said for English cricket in general. We quickly form working parties and committees in this country when things go wrong but they quickly get swept under the carpet.
Structure
The structure of the ECB is such that the 18 counties rule the roost and they will never do anything that jeopardises their revenue stream so you never really get the right people in the right positions.
Apart from Mike Gatting's token role as managing director of cricketing partnerships, whatever that means, none of England's high-profile cricketers get involved in the administration of the game because it is so frustrating and a bucket of black treacle to try and swim through to get a decision made.
Committee men know this and always try and play the time card and the best people around end up in the media rather than cricket administration.

Bob..How correct you are in your article. But I am afraid it is falling on deaf ears as the ECB management is stone deaf and blind too . Any person could have noted the poor performance of the English cricketers due to poor selection , inadequate coaching etc. Of course Sports in general is poor indeed . The attitude too of players like Pietersen , Andy Murray of cricket are pathetic and unsportsmanlike .

For me the most important point to emerge from the current controversy is that KP's captaincy led to disunity within the squad of players. Your best player and strongest and most assertive character doesn't always make the best captain, except in the short term when this revitalises everyone's self-confidence and acts as a breath of fresh air and gets everyone feeling good about themselves again. Experience of captaincy is also essential and an understanding of how different characters in the team respond to different kinds of treatment and this was why Mike Brearley was so effective and successful as a captain - he really knew how to get the best out of his players, e.g. his brilliant decision to make Bob Willis bowl uphill into the wind in 1981 to make him angry. Brearley was exceptional but I think that someone with the same sort of thoughtful and intelligent approach will always be a better long-term prospect as captain than the swashbuckling ego-driven type and this is why I am really glad that Andrew Strauss at last has the chance to show what he can do and build on his success against Pakistan in 2006. He should have retained the captaincy in Australia in 2007 and with KP back in the role of our best batsman without the pressures and distractions of captaincy I think we have the best combination we could ask for to seek a return of the Ashes next summer. As for coaches - please ECB, appoint someone who will support AS and who AS will respect and don't make the same mistake as you did last time.

ECB, English Cricket Brontosorus, the dinosaur appears to be alive and well, time for another meteorite I fancy?? Beefy was right when he was captain and he is right now, how long does it take before anybody takes any notice.

Aah yes, how the "Mighty" fall. Mr. KP turned his back on his motherland in search of riches and fame, blaming everybody but himself for not being selected to play for SA. The player who everybody in England said was the messiah with balls of steel ,could not fight for his place in SA. Well, people of England, now you know what everybody in SA has known for a long time....KP is an egotistical tosser. When the going gets tough and KP doesnt get his own way....the little boy runs away. Good riddance to crap is all I have to say. Oh, and 1 more thing, who are currently the best test team...mmmmm... South Africa...yes Mr. Pietersen, with the same "Quota" players you thought were just there because of their colour. How the wheels of fortune turn. Enjoy him England and his fake accent.

Once again the ECB have pressed the self destruct button, when are we going to understand that if we are going to make an appointment we should stick by him? they knew that KP did not get on with Peter Moores when they appointed him yet they thought that everything would sort themselves out, proof again that the pink gin brigade are still in charge of English (and Welsh) cricket.

Make the coach accountable to the Captain. If the captain gets the sack and the new captain doesn't want him to continue then the Captain appoints the new coach. Most captains in Australia seem to last for five years, ours seem to last five months. Too many cooks spoil the broth. The ECB has far too many people on handsome salaries desperately trying to justify their jobs.

The ECB are pathetic. They should get over themselves. Why did they give Pieterson the job in the first place if they weren't prepared to support him. Has anybody got a backbone in that organisation?

How fickle people are. A few months ago KP was the saviour, England were on our way to one-day success and the team was creating self-belief....KP did say he would do it "his way". Now, he is wrecking the England set-up, his iconoclastic approach was applauded, now it is his worse feature. Unfortunately most of the team are covering their own backsides by backing the horse they believe will keep them in the side. Every England cricket fan knows that half of the team or more would struggle to get in any other side apart from England, West Indies or New Zealand. We cannot afford to lose one of our (very) few world class cricketers. Losing to India in india was held no shame, on a different day, we could have won the first test and drawn the second (courtesy of Pietersens century). Bell, Panesar, Harmison - where were they when it mattered. Same with the Stanford tournament, the best bloke was Shah who can't even get in the Test team because of Bell's 'quality' and Pietersen was forced to take risks to cover others inadequacies. The disaster is that despite low morale we will roll over the West Indies, the worry is a depleted and below quality Australian side may stand a chance if we don't pull together. They have not been so weak for a long time, with one decent bowler fit and one crocked. Time to back quality gentleman.....class doesn't come in Plain vanilla, it has opinion, it has belief and most of all more often than not has talent !

Why is Bob Willis the only one of your number to consistently cut to the root of English cricket's problems, namely the structure and, more specifically, the blatantly self serving County Chairman. Until something is done to neuter the power of these intransigent dinosaurs who really have only one agenda on their collective minds....how to squeeze more money out of the ECB, then nothing will change. They know that their number is far too large and that 18 professional counties are at least 6 too many, but they willingly hold the ECB to ransom and collectively block any remotely radical ideas that come up, witness the recent Twenty/20 city based proposals. For this reason the ECB is repeatedly forced to fudge and compromise when in reality tough decisions and radical solutions are required, until this changes then English cricket will continue to lurch from one crisis to the next, interspersed with a once in 20 year hiatus. Can this change.. well for 18 individuals, the status quo is exactly what they gather to protect, and it is fairly well known that turkeys seldom cast a vote for Christmas.

Another Saffa captaining England... Pieterson was never the man for the job, he is far too arrogant a person to put others needs before his own. He was no good for english cricket.

i believe that the coach should decide the team, it is far too complicated to have the captin voicing his inputs aswell, peter moores was not the right man for the job thugh and KP should not have stepped down, we had far more stability under micheal V? but hay what do i know i prefer football ;-)

Peter Moores is the most sucessful county coach in England at the present time - He has taken an unsucessful county side Sussex to the top - Given time and support he would deliver in his England role - unfortunately appointing a non - English Captain is a recipe for disaster Pieterson has not now nor will he ever have England as his main concern he is much too much in love with himself and hius sucess

Peter Moores to me has always been less than dynamic. The present situation is wholly the fault of the ECB who did not put enough thought into the selection of Englands coach. In the same way they rushed into the selection of KP as captain of England. The committee members seem incapable of sitting down together and talking very seriously about all the options. I feel very sorry for Strauss as he is only just regaining some form and now has to try to mould the England team together after what is some serious falling out.

I do agree with most of your comments. The captain of any cricket team is like no other sport. He has to make many decisions from the moment he tosses the coin. How can KPbe happy when 9 of the players he has on the ground are ok and 2 are not those he wanted. The capt must have a vast ammount of input in team selection. The blame lies firmly with the ECB. They should give job discriptions to the key people and these must be agreed by all parties before appointments are made. There are too many "suits" getting paid for running meetings and delaying decisions so that another meeting can be held. They seem to be sitting around enjoying expenses and good lunches when their minds should be on the main task which is "to make cricket more successful for the national side"

just a couple of points) 1) The selection of the team is not the exclusive domain of the England captain 2) The coach should steer clear of the team during a match, unless consulted by the captain, who should have exclusive control during the game Surely we cannot allow current players to dictate to authority in the way that Pietersen has attempted to do. No one is bigger than the game. However I do agree that the wrong people control the game at the moment
