Bumble's Barbados blog covers cricket, football and Tina Turner

David Lloyd Posted 16th October 2008 view comments

This week's blog comes direct from Barbados, but it's not exactly been the sunshine break I'd imagined.

I came out here on Sunday with the lady wife to discover the place has been flooded by torrential rain. The golf course has been closed for three days solid, the West Coast Road is impassable and walls are falling down everywhere due to water damage. The people who live here have never seen anything like it.

It wasn't like this in the brochure...

We're still having a very nice time though. I've been to the gym every day and we've been out on some long walks, so we're enjoying ourselves before I make the half-an-hour trip to Antigua for the Stanford Series next week.

As everybody knows, Barbados is an ultra-expensive place. The restaurants see you coming so I'm breaking Mrs Lloyd in gradually. Last night I took her to Chefette, which is a slightly posher version of McDonalds, and bought her a potato roti and a big shake (that's got to be worth 10 dollars of anybody's money).

Later in the week I might let her have a sweet.

Gym'll fix it

A number of the England players are here ahead of the Stanford Series and if anybody is questioning how seriously they are taking it, think again. I was in the gym at 6.45am on Tuesday morning and I wasn't the first in.

Paul Collingwood and some of the others are working extremely hard to prepare for this and I've spotted several of them already. They all seem very excited about the Stanford match, not least because of the financial aspect of it.

Peter Moores has said they need to treat it like any other game, but I'm sure the main motivation for the players is the money - it certainly would be for me if I was playing! They're here to win that cash, not to make up the numbers.

They're Chefette-bound at the moment, but if they win in Antigua I'm sure they'll be able to eat at The Cliff in a couple of week's time.

The Cap fits

I watched the Belarus v England game in a Barbados bar on Wednesday and it was just like being in the centre of Manchester! It was absolutely full of Brits and the only difference is that you can smoke indoors here. That's not a good thing, it was like having a smokescreen in front of the televisions.

The locals had no idea what was going on in this bar full of drunken English blokes in football shirts cheering and bawling - people were even up on the tables roaring on the substitutions. I've never watched an England game overseas before, so it was certainly a new experience for me.

I think it might have got a bit ugly if they'd lost, but England played really well and the atmosphere was great. The whole room stood up clapping when Fabio Capello was on screen and he's showing why he's the man to take us forward.

I'm a big fan of Mr Capello. I know somebody in the England football camp who says he keeps the players at arms' length, keeps them guessing and rules by fear. It's a bit like Sir Alex Ferguson, who has lots of respect for his players - but they all know there's only one boss. I know everybody does it their own way, but I don't think coaches should be calling players by their nicknames. Capello seems to be doing things right.

TWO THOUSAND NOT OUT
As the creator of Bumble for PM on Facebook-Im chuffed we've now reached the magical 2,000 mark! Thank you Bumble, for all your classic comments! Must mention Ceci and Mel for the HILARIOUS pictures! Thanks girls! With a policy to simply print more money there is no way you wouldn't be elected as PM -Love it! Hannah Jackson

BUMBLE SAYS: I'm very pleased that the group has passed that particular milestone. In fact, one of my sons signed up this week and might even have been number 2,000 himself. I find the site hilarious and I'm so impressed with the time that you've taken to create pictures of me in various guises. I've been itching to go on it myself, but I don't think that would be right.

You've gone to an enormous amount of trouble, so when I do get into office I will reward you. There'll be backhanders, privileges and all the other things that go on in government - Cash for Honours will certainly be available if anybody wants to contribute.

When I do get in we'll be moving the epicentre of the government to Cheshire. We don't have a congestion charge up there so it'll be far more accessible for people. It's also important for a Prime Minister to be near to a canal and we have two of them in Manchester - the near canal and the far canal!

MUSICAL MUSINGS
As a keen member (and sometime contributor) to the Bumble for PM Facebook group, I am delighted to discover that my support has not been misplaced - Half Man Half Biscuit are the best band ever to emerge from Birkenhead (The Trumpton Riots is a masterpiece). Do any of your fellow commentators have even a smidgeon of your superior musical taste? If sharing a car journey, which one is least likely to drive you insane with their onboard musical selection? Mel Griffiths

BUMBLE SAYS: If ever I put Half Man Half Biscuit, The Fall or New York Dolls on, I'm greeted by a crescendo of "turn that **** off", so they're complete heathens in that respect. Allott's quite good, he likes his heavy metal - Led Zep and stuff from that era. Nasser's completely middle of the road, Elton John and that sort of thing. Atherton's tone deaf, I doubt he even has a radio in his car. And I can exclusively reveal that Beefy went to a Kylie Minogue concert last year... that's all I'm saying.

While we're on the subject of music, I've been asked many times who my ideal woman is. Well it's Lulu. I never miss QVC these days because she's been on there every day trying to flog her perfume. I also have a friend called Bernard who is over in America promoting Tina Turner's latest tour. She's of a certain vintage is Tina, so imagine my disappointment when Bernard texted me to say she hasn't mentioned me once. All I can say is she's going to have to ring me, because I'm not ringing her!

David Not far from my home there's a house called Bumble Cottage - handily placed (next door to the pub). It's near a grander country house called Woolmers and not far from another named Willis Farm. Howzat!?

Paul Gifford says...

I love Chefette! Anmd as i am sure you know there is no McDonalds to be found on Barbados- that is one of the places I love it so much! In St. Lawrence gap check out where the locals eat. St James is not my cup of tea- prefer Christchurch. Keep blogging- always entertaining! Paul
