Star players do not make great leaders, says Bumble

David Lloyd Posted 7th January 2009 view comments

I don't buy into the view that Kevin Pietersen's resignation as England captain is a disaster for the Ashes.

There's no doubt Pietersen is England's star player, this guy is world class, but should he be skipper?

I've got a very, very good friend who was an officer in the infantry and he would say most definitely, and I'm talking about life and death here and not a game of cricket, that your star man is not your leader. Leave him as your star man.

Pietersen: back in ranks?

Pietersen: back in ranks?

I would concur with that. We had Andrew Flintoff, who was a national treasure, as captain - that wasn't the way to go. The same should have been true of Brian Lara, Ian Botham and Geoffrey Boycott - don't put them anywhere near the captaincy, just let the genius come out.

With such a massive ego, Pietersen was never going to be a clear thinker, or decision maker. He actually said at the time he was appointed that if it doesn't work out, he would just resign and go back to the ranks!

Vaughan again

What I find incredible is that this whole business has been conducted from South Africa; I hear that Pietersen is abroad on safari, so you have to ask is there someone this side instigating it all?

I've had it confirmed by an insider that there is not the same togetherness as the 2005 Ashes winning team for one reason or another.

David Lloyd
Quotes of the week

Is there somebody else behind all of this? Is somebody unhappy with Moores and uneasy with Pietersen as captain?

We are not in the inner sanctum of the dressing room, but personally I'm disappointed to see Moores go. He's had a terrific track record and two years is no time at all; I did that job for three-and-a-half years and didn't feel I was getting my feet under the table.

The ECB officials spoke very highly of him, but it is clear his position may now have become untenable.

I'm still catching my breath but it could be that Andy Flower takes over from Moores in the interim; he knows the system and the players and he's a thoroughly good man.

And Andrew Strauss, the only other candidate when Pietersen was appointed, could take over as Test captain, but that raises a heap of questions not least because he is not in the one-day side.

I've said in the past that it's not ideal to have two different captains but what can you do when there is no obvious candidate to do both jobs? There is one guy in the background with a steady hand right at the minute who could step in - Michael Vaughan.

I should think his future is being discussed because if you want someone to calm things down then he could be the man. I know he has not been playing but he was a wonderful captain and knows what it is like to win the Ashes.

Respect key

In contrast, I've said privately that I don't think this team is exactly right. I've had it confirmed by an insider that there is not the same togetherness as the 2005 Ashes winning team for one reason or another.

I go back to my time when I worked with two captains, who were exceptional people: Michael Atherton and Alec Stewart. I knew my place and it was behind them. A coach should prepare the team to enable them to play at their absolute best and then leave it to them.

It's pretty clear Pietersen and Moores have not been getting on, but that should not be an issue as there have been plenty of players over the years who have not spoken to players! Apparently, on one tour to South Africa Duncan Fletcher did not speak to two players at all!

The key to a successful partnership is to have a challenge between the captain and coach, a mutual respect. Look at Duncan Fletcher and Nasser Hussain. They challenged each other rather than just have 'yes sir, yes sir, three bags full sir'.

In other news...

News has reached me that the Brigadier got very thirsty during the New Year's festivities and stayed in the Hesketh longer than he should have.

He was taken home, promptly fell out of the taxi and was swiftly dispatched to the shed by Lady Carr for six hours.

After inadvertedly falling over the Qualcast 400, he tripped over Graham and Jimmy the garden gnomes before coming to rest on the summer lilo.

He has been under house arrest (or should that be shed arrest?) ever since, although he was out on probation on Monday evening - but under the strict supervision of Lady Carr...

Hi Bumble, Peter Seal here from Rawtenstall cricket club. I saw on the Lancashire League website that you have been made a life member at Accrington cc. Please can I congratulate you on this great honour, and also congratulate you and your team mates pipping us to the title! My question - what do you think our league and other leagues should do about professionals? Surely our league should employ home grown pros like myself? Peter Seal

BUMBLE REPLIES: Hi Pete, good to hear from you again. I thoroughly enjoyed my league experience last season, going back to my roots and meeting up with people I hadn't seen for a long, long time. But I did find that paying a professional in the Lancashire League is unsustainable. There are so many clubs on the brink. Accrington won the cup and the league with a very modest outlay, but we still only broke even. We had a very modest professional, but the money paid to him drained the club. I did suggest that there should be a moratorium in the league for two years without professionals to allow clubs to get back on their feet. The days have gone of clubs having a great professional and filling the grounds. It doesn't happy any more.

Anyway, I'd like to carry on this year but I think Dibendra Singh Ormerod might have different ideas.

I would not be surprised at all if Pietersen is in South Africa negotiating a new deal of some sorts especially now that the Proteas has done so well against Australia and nearly managed to topple the Aussies from the #1 spot. We know the man. We know his tactics.

Well getting rid of Coach and Captain was the only way out, and I have to say I glad to see Pietersen stripped of captaincy, he was a poor captain. Sure Vaughan didn't bat greatly but he was a decent tactician, and knew what he was doing on the cricket pitch, Strauss as captain, well he's the rock of the side, and when you look at the successful captains of the world (Ponting, Smith) you can always rely on them to get some runs much in the same way, so I say good. ODI and 20/20 captain - give it back to Colly, he's a good infuential player, who is very nitty gritty, or if not him I heard Dimi Mascheranas was in the ODI squad again? The question is, will Pietersen play against the Windies in the first few games, and if he doesn't will the selectors finally give Shah/Bopara or somebody else a try?

The sad fact is there is no obvious candidate to replace KP, in this current side KP may have been the popular choice with the media and fans as captain but the same cannot be said of the coaching staff and some players. Realistically who is there in the current England squad that could have sufficient impact as captain so that the series against WI and the ashes are successful? The answer is no one, all this talk of looking to the 'future' is flawed, there isn't a potential captain with enough quality in the required areas to improve Englands success long term. It's an unfortunate fact and no amount of pontificating will change that. The only player around the set up with the pedigree required is Michael Vaughan, admittedly his batting has not been upto the standards we came to expect of him and injuries have taken their toll but in the field and amongst the players he is the best England captain of recent years. The stats prove that, look at them. I would certainly back Vaughan to improve the situation for English test cricket for 2009 at least.

Get Michael Vaughan back as captain, then for the long term sack the so called !!!!! from the ECB bring in some of the experience players from the past or present. As for the future the captain is number 1 and everyone else is there to help him.

Hi Bumble, I'm just so relieved that Pietersen is no longer the England captain. I believe that we will look back on his departure in a couple of years as a watershed in the development of English cricket. Others will now have to realise their potential - Bell, Cook and Shah in particular may find themselves in an atmosphere where they will feel that they can express themselves more fully both in the dressing room and on the field without his suffocating presence as captain. I don't believe it is coincidence that Bell in particular has failed to impress during Pietersen's brief captaincy period. Let's look forward with optimism.

What is annoying me about the press coverage of the Pieterson affair is the number of ex-players all jumping in to have thier say. Its almost as if they could'nt wait for Pieterson to fail. I suspect there is a touch of the green eyed monster with some of them, Mr Hussain seems to be leading the hate Pieterson list. Yes, the guy is flawed, yes he has a big ego, but if you look at the Aussies, the south africans and even the best indian players they all seem to have the same traits. In order to compete with these guys you need strength of character, and over the years this is something that english cricket has lacked. So come on you ex-players, now you have got want, why not give the bloke a chance. Why not give your ego's a day off and leave Pieterson and Moores to sort it out themselves.

typical england,6 months or less till the biggest trophy on the cricket sporting calender, and we get it wrong again.there's already talk of vaughan coming back as captain, which is half the reason pieterson and moores fell out in the first place.in my opinion, moores isnt the answer as a manager,he hardly looks inspired, and pieterson although a genius,is a one man ego band, theres got to be a place for him in the side, but he blows up all to often.flintoffs game went as did collingwoods when they had the roles, and vaughans had his chance, the team needs a shake up.in fact the whole committee should go and give selection to the likes of hussain, botham, willis and alec stewart, people who are passionate and dont beat about the bush.

I dont really agree with Bumble on this! Your assumption that stars dont make good captains is a very light. Lets look at this in a more analytical way - Chris Gayle, G Smith, R Ponting, M Jayawardene .. these are either the best batsmen in their sides, if not certainly the second best batsmen. All of them are doing a pretty fine job. Dhoni is the most vibrant player in the side and he is doing a fine job. Vettori is the best player in that NZ side by a long way and he is handling it pretty well too. So i find it hard ot agree with your assumption that big stars dont make good leaders. Whether Pieterson is best for the job or not, is a different issue though.

Moores will certainly not be missed..........Pietersen will........the ECB have not helped either by backing a coach who was clearly not up to the task............replacement?....Vaughan?.....that must be a joke......Key?.........if he's good enough to be trusted with the development squad, why not the test team??

Mark Thomas says... Bring back Michael Vaughan as Captain! He's had a break, he should be fresh and ready to win back the ashes The last thing we want is Michael Vaughan coming back to English Cricket, the team has to move forward not backwards..He isnt mentally fit for such a massive position, Vaughan did his job well when things were going good but when things went bad he blamed everyone but himself..Not very professional in my opinion. This whole fiasco with Moores and Pietersen is just another story in the joke that is English Cricket at the moment..My love for watching England play has gone, i would rather watch Bangladesh play..Thats how bad this has got

Les Cullen says...

David Lloyd referred to Kevin Pietersens's massive ego in the above article. I don't think I have seen a cricketer with a bigger ego than Michael Vaughan.....that I would contend is his problem. He worries more about his self image than the game. If he was able to forget himself and concentrate on the game I believe he would become the finest captain out there. Michael get your mind sorted son!

Mo Husen says...

Quote: "I've got a feeling Pietersen will get his way" said David Gower. Once a precedent is set, there will be no turning back. Captain/players dictating who the coach or backroom staff should be, favouritism kicks in and it will result in a mess and divide the team. If Moores is sacked, it cannot reflect well on the people who appointed him in the first place, the same people who also appointed Pietersen as captain - their judgment needs to be questioned and perhaps they should also get the sack. Good players do not necessarily make good captains - Lara, Tendulkar, Gavasker, Botham & even, some might say, Ponting - and cricketers don't come bigger than these names, all record breakers. If Pietersen was a proven captain then fair enough but he has lot to prove yet and captaincy may even bring his own downfall as a player. Ganguly was a proven and experienced captain, the best India have had so far and yet the BCCI board backed their coach rather then the captain. No single player can or should be bigger than the system, besides Pietersen may be a mere cricketing mercenary with no long-term interest in English cricket aka Tony Greig & Allan Lamb. England should just milk KP for his talents as a batsman just like KP is milking England for his own personal cricketing ambitions and money, a mutual benefit scenario nothing more nothing less.

absolute ludicrous this guy should be skipper full stop hes by far the best player , hes been skipper for 2 series and already hes gone because hes the one who needed to be listened to NOT peter moores

Bring back Michael Vaughan as Captain! He's had a break, he should be fresh and ready to win back the ashes. Agree 100% with Bumble - leave your star player be your star player. Moores must go!!! He fell out with Vaughan, he's fallen out with Pietersen - there's obviously something not right.
