Everywhere you go, people are talking about the Ashes and I think we are in for something very special.
Public interest is always so high and all of the trailers on the TV and the radio have really built the anticipation. Given fair weather it should be a really good series.
I'll be getting ready in the same way as I would do for any other cricket commentary, but I must admit it is going to feel a little different going to Cardiff for the first Test
Lee: big miss for Aussies
As I've said all along, I just hope we don't get a chief executive's wicket. I want to see a proper cricket match on a proper cricket pitch and that the players are able to express themselves.
I want entertainment, and hopefully a winner - we don't want to see a five-day draw that has bored the arse off everybody.
The people in suits at Cardiff would love to see it go on for five days so that they get maximum revenue - but I want to see a game for the people, not the prawn sandwich brigade.
Predictions
Glenn McGrath has predicted a 5-0 win for Australia, but he'd probably say that if it was a three-match series!

England v Australia
10am, Wed, Sky Sports 1 & HD1
Personally, I can't see Australia winning a game. I just don't think they're good enough to bowl England out.
There's a lack of balance in their side and without Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne there's a lack of quality as well. Their bowlers will have to learn about Ashes cricket - and they will need to do so very quickly.
Peter Siddle is a good bowler, but Stuart Clark is well below his best and their best bowler, Brett Lee, is not playing. What else have they got?
Without Lee, Nathan Hauritz will probably come in and he's a better bowler than people give him credit for. England's tactic will be to clatter him, but I think he'll be better than a lot of people think - especially on a big ground.
Of course, he's not Shane Warne but it's a bit unfair to describe him as the worst spinner to appear in the Ashes. Don't dismiss Hauritz.
New territory
Of course, Michael Hussey will score runs and Ricky Ponting will score runs, but this Australia team are approaching new territory in an Ashes series. No longer can Ponting throw the ball to Warne and tell him to get somebody out. That's the key factor here.
I think that England have got the quality spin options and that will play a part when the games go into a fourth and fifth day. The bad weather of Monday and Tuesday may mean they don't play two spinners in Cardiff, but there's no doubt that Graeme Swann - and also Monty Panesar - will have a big role to play.
My prediction is a 2-0 series win to England. I don't think it can be 5-0, but I can see England winning at least two matches.
And if Cardiff plays as it traditionally does, then I can see no reason why England won't get off to a winning start.
Cricket changes
Cricket has changed so much in recent years. I was at the Friends Provident Trophy semi-final between Hampshire and Lancashire - a showpiece match - and yet the best players weren't playing.
Andrew Flintoff and James Anderson were not in the Lancashire side and Kevin Pietersen still hasn't played a single game for Hampshire all year.
It's a sign of the times - and shows once again that we play far too much domestic cricket. If we spread the matches out more then there would be ample time for somebody like Pietersen to play for Hampshire in the big games.
It's an absolute joke that they play 18 County Championship matches in a season as it is. The players need more time to practise and the domestic structure needs to be restructured so that the best players can play in the biggest games.
By the way, I wonder if Hampshire will play Pietersen in the final? Would it be fair to turn around to the kid who's got them there and tell him he can't play because Kevin's available? I'm not sure that would be on.
More nonsense
Another example of this came in the Worcester v Durham match. Worcester were without their three best players (Steven Davies, Vikram Solanki and Stephen Moore) because they were playing for England Lions while Durham were denied their best bowlers, Steve Harmison and Graham Onions.
Effectively that County Championship match was a second XI game because there isn't enough time to fit everything into the schedule.
You'd never see the England football team playing a match at the same time as Manchester United. The domestic game needs to be geared towards what is right for the spectators and the players, rather than the chief executives.
It's an absolute nonsense and I'd love to hear your thoughts on that issue.

GAME FOR A LAUGH
Bumble. I'd love to hear what you think is the funniest moment in Ashes history? For me it has to be Steve Harmison's opening ball in 2006! It really set the tone for the series. Rob.
BUMBLE SAYS: I'm not sure if that ball was funny or tragic. It was an unbelievable moment - and what struck me was that the game carried on as if nothing had happened! As for other funny moments, it seems many people found it quite funny when I got hit in the nether regions - but I can assure you it wasn't! I always found Merv Hughes great fun to watch in these matches too; he was a gentle giant who played the game with a snarl on his face - and he always had the crowd on his side.
BOOGIE NIGHTS
Just a note to say thanks for the mention on the TV Saturday morning David, every band needs a leg up sometimes... and we've been working so hard of late so it was a real boost to hear from so many different folks all over the UK that you gave us a mention during the live coverage. Thanks again, Cliff Dawe. (The Fabulous Boogie Boys - lead vocal)
BUMBLE SAYS: This band are out of this world. I saw them in a venue called Drummonds last week and I thought it was sensational. They were dressed outrageously in long red jackets and played fabulous boogie woogie. They raised the roof. I'll be back in Worcester in the not-too-distant future so I hope I'll be able to see them again.
Bumble's jukebox
Well done to those of you who correctly identified 'National Sh**e Day' by Half Man Half Biscuit last week. This week's track has partly been inspired by the fact I'm in Wales for the Ashes - but think carefully. I want the name of the song and the artist that originally took it into the charts (no cover versions).
Want some whiskey in your water? / Sugar in your tea? / What's all these crazy questions they're asking me? / This is the craziest party that could ever be. / Don't turn on the lights cause I don't wanna see.
I want the artist and track title - and not the recent cover version. The answer will be in my next blog.

Bumble, bumble, bumble! Greetings from Sydney. But 2-0? What is the go there? England don't have a hope in hell of winning one game, or even getting close! Especially if they continue to play dud players like Broad at the expense of picking great bowlers such as Harmison. If Harmison plays, then England have some hope of winning one game. 3-1 is my prediction. Australia have the bowling attack to bowl England out ten times over. No idea why North was bowling in the last 4 overs, Hilfenhaus would have done the job for sure. Even Johnson (ala final session SCG 2008 v the SAFAs) could have done the job for us. If England are going to have a hope in hell at Lords, and overturn their 75 year curse there against the Aussies, they should pick the team below: Strauss, Cook, Bell, Pietersen, Collingwood, Prior, Flintoff (if fit, Bopara otherwise, Bopara to bat at 6), Swann, Onions, Anderson, Harmison. Love ya Bumble, really enjoying the Sky Sports commentary via SBS here in Australia too. Saw Michael Atherton in Sydney a few years back and he is a lovely bloke. Good luck with the calls for the rest of the series, GO YOU AUSSIES!

Why is Ricky Ponting allowed to spit sticky chewing gum saliva on his hands when he's going to field? This will not only let him catch balls easier it will also with the transfered stickiness going onto the ball; help the bowler spin the ball faster and the ball will also grip better on the pitch. He does this in full view of the cameras and nobody seems to do anything about it. You're not allowed to bring anything to the game besides normal bodily fluids, this does not include chewing gum; which should be banned from the game. Ricky Pontings been blaming England for cheating and he's been doing it for years.

Oops Bumble. Sounded like the witterings of confused, yet deeply loyal, man. England batting line up filled with average batsmen... and KP. Hope Bopara comes good in time but horrible start for him. For Monty to be ineffective on that wicket, against all the left handers is astonishing. Bye bye Monty

Just a question for Bumble and the rest of the panel. Do you think it's fair or appropriate of the England players to sign autographs at the end of the day almost begrudgingly and with barely a smile between them? I refer to yesterday, the first day of an Ashes series we have an excellent chance of winning. We had a great day on the pitch and in the stands watching - confidence is high allround and the supporters are fully behind this England team. Why then at the end of the day do the England players sign autographs for fans, young and old, with barely a smile or acknowledment between them? Mitchell Johnson and Brett Lee were smiling and posing for photographs whereas Stuart Broad, Freddie Flintoff and Paul Collingwood couldn't muster a smile between them and Broad almost arrogantly wouldn't look at anyone directly when signing his name! Collingwood did pose for photographs but couldn't/wouldn't smile for it. This may sound petty but I just think the players should appreciate the support and respect that fans are delighted to meet their "heroes" only to have it tarnished by players acting as prima dona's. Am I being petty or do you agree that the players could at least lighten up a bit..? Tony Lewis was charming by the way........ Mant thanks for your excellent work Chris Barlow Nantwich

Mama Told Me Not to Come, made famous by Three Dog Night amongst others. But written by Randy Newman and first performed by the Animals? The Australians don't look to be of the same ilk as came here in 2005, and thrashed us 5-0 in 2007. They'll miss Brett Lee's ability to come on and change things quickly. The break-throughs they have gotten today were more to do with poor shot selection than bowling guile - in my opnion.

Hi Bumble. Brave comments I must say. I was in England for the 2005 Ashes and I recall the magic of those 5 enthralling matches. Arguably the best test series ever for me. A lot has changed since then though. Ponting will not have the luxury of Shane Warne and with all due respect the replacement spinners just don't cut it at this level. On the bright side, the Aussies have Mitch, who I believe possesses all the traits of a superstar performer. Also, is Ponting the same batsmen and leader that he was 4 years ago? Lets not forget they are missing their talesman openers Matty Hayden & Langer as well. England have a formidable bowling line-up no doubt and collectively they have the ability to take 20 Aussie wickets on more than one occassion. Anderson will be key, but do the others have the arsenal to bowl at the likes of Clarke, Ponting, Katich, Hussey? But of course, the English have Freddie. As a cricket fan, slightly biased towards England, I just hope this series lives up to the expectations of the Ashes. There is quality on both sides and there is something both sides have in common, neither has a match-winning spinner. Prediction: 1-1. Nice blog, looking forward to your commentary during the series. You alongwith Nass , Atherton, Gower & Botham are legends and a great team. Keep us entertained.

Bumble - I echo your sentiment this is a TEST series and hisorically every test ground presents a different challenge. The only difference with Cardiff is that there is a fear of the unknown because nobody is certain how the pitch will behave over 5 days. The wicket at Leeds has been criticised in the past but it often produced a good cricket wicket where the best team has been able to get a result and let's hope Cardiff is the same. Counties have a tough time deciding whether to select their England players when they are available and not long ago Hampshire selected Pieterson and Warwickshire didn't pick Bell. Lancashire, Durham and Nottinghamshire have an embarrassment of bowling riches and if their top bowlers played all the big maches they might lose some of the rest to other counties. On funniest moments some of the antics of Derek Randall are very funny. He was at his best in the centenary test and the expression on Dennis Lillee's face as he stood eye ball to eye ball while Randall signalled a four was a joy. I suspect that the funniest moments are the off the cuff comments between the players that we don't hear. Your alleged comment in the dressing room having been hit amidships by Lillee and carried off must have been hillarious.

Hi Bumble, The points you raise about the domestic game are indeed very true. The county game would be stronger in having the international players taking part and when Pietersen first came out of the woodwork, I looked forward to him and Warne at Hampshire but it never really happened because of the ridiculous domestic setup. I believe the tiering structure is correct but there is still the fixtures issue of no international break or at least some sort of compromise. With respect to your decision over the Ashes being 2-0, I am tempted to disagree. I think too many people are focusing on the was, not the is. True, the Aussies have lost legends of the game in Warne, McGrath, Gilchrist and Hayden, but people wrote them off for the South Africa tour and they won convincingly. I believe the Ashes will be close, possibly 2-1. At least one game will be a draw, it just happens with the weather we get!! I think that this year, the player to look out for in the Aussie team is Mitchell Johnson. With a fast left-arm action, he could arc the ball in and cause real unease in the batting line-up of England. Of course, I hope I'm wrong! But along with Stuart Clark, they could be the ones to emerge from the shadows finally. In England teams, Cook and Bopara need to continue their decent form or we may pay the price. With Pietersen failing somewhat and Freddie still lingering as a doubt fitness-wise, I feel they could be critical to our challenge to get the urn back on home soil again. As for Monty, he may prove us wrong.
