The States Khan wait

Amir was sensational but should stay here for while, says Glenn

Glenn McCrory Posted 20th July 2009 view comments

I thought Amir Khan was absolutely excellent on Saturday night, outstanding.

He did everything right against a very strong, very game champion, who had definitely come to keep his title.

I have to admit I didn't expect Andreas Kotelnik to be as lively and as fired up as he was, but he showed us all what a good fighter and worthy world champion.

Khan: fired back fatser and harder when he was tagged

Khan: fired back fatser and harder when he was tagged

And in turn, that made Amir Khan's achievement even greater.

He just handled it all, took everything in his stride. I did wonder whether the occasion would get to him - he is just a kid after all - but he looked like he belonged there.

It showed the value of a good corner, a good trainer in Freddie Roach and it showed that Amir listened perfectly to the instructions and the gameplan.

But I've got to say, that seemed to change on Saturday night. It wasn't quite one of those MEN Arena nights with Ricky Hatton, but the crowd were with Amir every step of the way. Their hearts were in their mouths towards the end and they were cheering whenever he let those fast hands go - but you could tell everybody was willing him to win.

Quotes of the week

And you could see it. You could tell that he knew he had a huge task on his hands and had to concentrate for every minute of every round. But he did the job he had to and did it very well - and thoroughly deserved to win.

Dedicated

It's amazing really because 10 months ago, no-one would have given him a hope in hell of doing anything in the sport, let alone winning a world title at light-welterweight in such a short space of time.

It just goes to show what can be achieved with hard work and dedication and proved that anything is attainable if you are dedicated and give it everything. That is what Amir does and that is why I am so delighted for him.

He is a smashing lad who really wants to be successful and really wants to be a great champion and I am sure this is only just the beginning.

If there was one slight downside, it was that he never really dented Kotelnik's defence. We know the Ukrainian has a decent chin, but I wonder if Amir is not going to be that strong up at light-welterweight, but he barely broke through.

But, what he did do was put on a boxing exhibition and a great lesson for any kids watching. What impressed me the most was whenever Kotelink caught him, Amir fired back immediately, with more and at blistering speed.

Every time Kotelnik threatened to get on top, he was their firing back and you can see why the judges scored it so heavily in his favour because every round, he did more.

Anchored

I liked the look of his defence as well. When Kotelnik was coming on strong, he planted his feet and anchored himself. When he was knocked over in the past, it was because he was always on the move. It's like standing on a bus that's going round a corner; if you're moving you will fall over, so you plant your feet and set your legs.

Amir also did the same when he was punching, although he was soon on his toes and out of range again. It really was the perfect gameplan from Freddie Roach and it couldn't have been executed better.

I do hope it will now mean people get of the lad's back a bit as well. I think he is great for British boxing and a definite superstar in the making, but up until now, he hasn't had the best support from the British boxing public.

Where he goes from here is what we are all waiting to find out. There is lots of talk of America and the weight is also an issue. I happen to think he might just be better off as a big lightweight, but that division is red-hot right now and there are some extremely lucrative, but dangerous, fights out there.

Then again, he is a world champion at light-welterweight, so will probably defend that first, which is fair enough. But I just have a feeling that maybe four or five years down the line, when he has properly filled out, he will be strong light-welter.

Supporter

But I understand there are some decent fights out there for him at 140lbs as well - but I really, really don't want to see him in with Hatton.

Ricky is a great friend and supporter of Amir and I know Amir looks up to him, so is it a fight either of them needs? Ricky owes no-one anything, so why should he take it?

Besides, we have Junior Witter fighting for the WBC light-welterweight title in a few weeks, so if he wins that, there's a domestic fight with plenty of interest for Khan - and of course, one that Hatton never wanted.

Amir is already talking of fighting in America, but I don't think he is ready for that just yet. I know he's based out there, but I would like to see him really conquer Britain first, over the next few fights.

Ricky and Frank Bruno were massively popular before they went over to the States, and took huge numbers with them. If Amir went right now, he would probably on take a handful with him, so maybe he needs a little more time to build up that fanbase first.

We'll have to wait and see what Team Khan decide, but Saturday night's performance was the perfect platform for him to kick on from. And the one thing we can be certain of, is there's plenty more to come.

Where and who should Amir Khan fight next? What did you make of the performance on Saturday night? Let us know by filling in the feedback form below...

Mr Paul Wickes, who do you think is the best light-welterweight in the World?! Where do you have the Pac-man rated? Answer on a postcard please.....

Paul Wickes says...

If Khan wants to be taken seriously on the world stage there is only one fighter he should look to meet - Tim Bradley. In mu opinion he is the best Junior Welterweight in the world. Bradley has beaten Junior Witter and Kendall Holt. He's a class act and a smooth operator. He's also mighty quick. Khan should have his measure, but it won't be easy.

I feel Khan is just not ready for the big league... in my opinion he needs to go 12 rounds with someone that has the technical ability and punching power but he is being shielded by Frank Warren because everyone knows he has got a glass chin... Khan is a media puppet for England, just like Nazeem before him, the ring entries are getting more elaborate and his confidence will overflow and then he'll be put on the scrapheap by someone more deserving of the title

Personally a think khan is like marmite you either love him or hate him. Maybe hatton would beat him but witter no chance. Yes witter can bang but he lunges into his punches and is very predictable (hense the whipping tim bradely gave him). Witter will put himself forward like he has against hatton for all these years because he has nothing to lose. IF he were to lose against Khan or Hatton we all expected it and if he wins he's a hero either way he gets the biggest pay day of his life! A would like to see Khan fight prescott again because he would give him a lesson at range under freddie. A do agree thatb Khan lacks power but so did Calzaghe and he is our greatest post war boxer (although he does have a granit chin which could be Khan biggest problem and not any of the opponents flyiny around!) Adios folks!!

JD your absolutely spot on with that comment and this is exactly the kind of carry on that is undermining boxing.. look at the UFC for example where you have one or two guys at the top of the tree.. and all they want to see is the best fight the best which is exactly why it has become so popular and in turn has created a massive following for itself.. In the long run it is people like Warren along with fighters like Khan that will create a huge dent in boxings popularity as all they are interested in is lining their own pockets and us fools fall for it time and time again.. It is truly depressing..

Amir Kahn is really a nobody he thinks he can now beat anybody because he beat a nobody for the title! His chin is weak one soft shot he's down 'let's not forget Prescott' more handpicking weak opponents needs to stop and fight a real fighter. Hatton may have no defense but he would eat amir alive as soon that bell went 'ding ding'

Powder puff punches? Kotelnik has an iron chin...there is noway a person get judge kahns punching power in that fight, when Kotelnik has such a good chin And I said Witter really (in my opinion) was beaten by Kotelnik...he never hurt him either Kahn knocked Kotelnik back much more convincingly than Witter did I think people should research a little into kahns opponents before making such over generalized accusations

Khan will beat Hatton if he faces him, Hatton needs to retire else he is guna get hurt sooner rather than later. The Witter fight could be an interesting one, i just hope he faces some good opposition from here on in.

I think Ricky Hatton v Khan would be a very intriguing fight, if it's made. Could Hatton get within range of Khan? Would Khan be disqualified for holding? How much punch resistance has Hatton got left? The questions go on and I couldn't pick a winner, but Frank Warren will think it's a bit too risky for both himself and Khan to take Hatton on at this stage of Khan's career. Frank Warren will be looking to make a couple of relatively safe fights with good returns for Khan for now, which both will see suits both of them; and I think a fight with Witter could also be seen as bit too risky. I don't think Khan will stay at light-welterweight for long; before moving back down to lightweight to take on all-comers, with experience and confidence in his chin, having taken a few 'heavier' shots. I reckon he will now defend against and beat a non-punching, ageing, blown-up lightweight, like Erik Morales; before beating a credible, yet non-punching light-welter; like Malignaggi. He will then be ready for his first Vegas super-fight but at lightweight. If I had to predict a fighter to put him up against in 12-18 months time when I think that will happen, then I'd say Marquez; when Khan would be defeated. Khan has been very well promoted, avoiding Thaxton and Murray before being put on the world stage. Murray v Khan after Marquez v Khan; for one of the top-four versions of the world title at lightweight. Prescott will be avoided. Anybody agree with what I have seen in my crystal ball?

Andrew Davies says...

Well done to Khan fought a good fight. Welcome to the big time now, there's alot of talent at light welter but its better suited for him than back down at lightweight. I admire Amir for wanting the big fights and speaking of America but I dont see it happening!! I really cant see Frank Warren sending Amir out to undercard someone else's main event when he knows he can fill stadiums back home. The Morales fight would be a disgrace but I woudnt be suprised in Frank making it and also maybe a couple of home defences v the likes of Dmitriy Salita, Souleymane M'baye and Miguel Vazquez (hyped as the conqueror of Breidis Prescott)

Khan would not last 3rounds with Ricky Hatton! Frank Warren loves to knock Ricky but lets face it, Rick your a legend & a different class to Khan. Im not knocking Amir he did very well Saturday but as they say - know your limits my son, Ricky Hatton is one step too far for Khan. Fight Prescott again and stop ducking the man that flattened you in 54 seconds!

I like khan, mainly because hes british, Why are we mentioning witter? WHO? And hatton would knock khan out, simply becasue hatton with him having no defence will stand there and take khans punches all day and we all know how hatton can pack a punch, khan would start dancing about the place and fall on to rickys hook, Dont fight him khan, ricky didnt lose becasue hes past it, he lost to the best fighter in the world with a devastating knockout, something you dont have and your feathers wont hurt him YET! But i do think khan has a fine future becasue he will get stronger, khan v prescot 2

Why dont we all calm down, take a step back, and appriciate what actualy happened on saturday night first. Amir Kahn, not even a year ago was wrote off, knocked out by an unknown and riddiculed by most boxing fans out there. He went back to the drawing board, he worked super hard and at the tender age of 22 he won a world title at the weight above. Congratulations to Amir Kahn. Why people now are questioning his power, or his next opponenet is beyond me. I personly thought that he would be beaten on saturday. i am happy to say i was proved wrong. I think a fight with Hatton would absolutely grip the nation, and i also think that the British public would now be split after watching kahns performance on Saturday night. Thats what would make it all the more interesting... People forget that Kahn is still only 22. The boxers being mentioned in Hatton and Witter and 10 years older than him, both carrying more experience. I dont think we will ever get the chance to see a Kahn v Hatton match whereas there wouldnt be an excuse for either side after the bell. If Kahn wins, he beat a former great champion who was past it. if hatton wins, kahn is only 22 and his age and experience will be brought into the argument. A mouthwatering clash it would be, it would be the biggest fight ever in British history. But will Frank Warren risk putting Kahn in with someone who has only been beaten by the very best, and has awesome punching power at that weight. And would team Hatton want Ricky's last fight to be a defeat against a kid who looked up to him and is only 22.......

Posted 16:04 21st July 2009

Stephen Mooney says...

Basically thus far Hatton and Witter have always been beaten when they fight the top guys.. Frank is not going to risk sitting at ringside and watch either of them potentially give Khan a boxing lesson.. another issue that arose from saturday night and nobody can argue with this.. is that at the weight Khan had absolutely no power.. id like to see him get in close and plant his feet with a couple of big shots but due to his questionable chin he appears to be simply lunging in and out with four or five powder puff punches.. im not saying to do well he needs an absolute sparker of a punch but with a dodge chin twelve rounds with any of the top guys who can bang will be a long time.. God knows who he will fight next.. but i suspect it will somebody we dont know a whole lot about..

Matthew Porter says...

Im sorry 'Amir Khan' but Hatton would not get knocked out by Khan ever!! Khan is very fast and a good boxer but he hits about as well as Paulie Malignaggi, no power whatsoever. Hatton on a good day would eat him alive. But Khan only wants this fight now that he saw Hatton dismantled by Pacquiao, theres talk of him fighting Morales next, more handpicking againsty blown up ancient, shot fighters.......one Pac destroyed twice.

Kahn beat Kotelnik a lot more convincingly than Witter did (I even thought Witter lost) so I wouldnt say "Witter definitely would beat him"

Amir Khan says...

Khan would be way too fast for Hatton. Let's not forget Ricky has virtually no defense unlike Kotelnik who rode alot of the shots, i could see the fight being stopped because of a cut or Ricky being knocked out in the tenth. Amir Khan is only going to get stronger and stronger believe the hype!

Posted 18:25 20th July 2009

Stephen Mooney says...

Glenn... you say he should conquer Britain, but is he not supposed to be a "world champion"? Big Frank won't let him fight Hatton or Witter - he knows Hatton would probably beat him and that Witter definitely would.
