I have always thought nobody could touch Floyd Mayweather.
I have been ringside for a lot of his fights, including places like Grand Rapids, Miami and Portland, when he was not wanted in Las Vegas simply because he was too bloody good.
He was great. Boringly great. Nobody came close to him and literally at times, nobody could touch him. I honestly thought we had a kid who was too good, almost for his own good.
Mayweather: great, but too great for Pacquiao?
But last weekend, that all changed with one performance from Manny Pacquiao.
He showed against Miguel Cotto again, that he has one crucial asset that no-one else who has faced Mayweather has had - speed. Make that lightning-fast speed!
Look at the left hooks that flattened Cotto and Ricky Hatton; I say look but you might need the slow-motion replay because this phenomenon from the Phillipines has blinding handspeed.
Everyone out there has their leveller, the one man that can beat them, or they can't beat; maybe Manny Pacquiao is Floyd Mayweather's...

Quotes of the week
He will get to Mayweather, he will beat him to the punch and he will make him fight.
Technician
My one doubt about Floyd has always been his heart for a tear-up, the willingness to get involved in a scrap. Because he is so good he has never had to do that, but against Pacquiao, he will have no choice.
Pacquiao will be on him from the word go and he will stay on him right until the final bell, going for that knockout. That's what he did against Cotto when we all knew the fight was up; that is why we all love him, because a bit like Ricky, he is always trying to get the other guy out of there.
Mayweather though, has never had to go for broke. He is such a fantastic technician he doesn't need to. When he had been out of the ring for a while and came back against a very good fighter in Juan Manuel Marquez, we all wondered how good he'd be, how he'd manage after the lay-off.
My advice at the time - a couple of months ago - was never bet against Floyd Mayweather. Now, when they meet - and this is a fight that has to happen - my advice would be: don't bet against Manny Pacquiao!
He reminds me in a way of Roberto Duran; a brilliant, brilliant fighter that can go up through the weights and lose nothing. Had I still been a cruiserweight champion I would be sitting here now clutching my belt praying that Pacquiao stays where he is!
Leveller
Outside the ring he is a perfect gentleman and the ideal role model, polite and professional and clearly happy in his work - did you ever see a man so relaxed before the biggest fight of his life? Where Duran snarls, Pacquiao just smiles, but inside the ring, they are both proper, proper fighters.
Speaking of Duran, isn't it great that here we are talking about two fighters that would have walked comfortably into any era in the sport, including the Hagler-Hearns-Leonard-Duran era? Mayweather and Pacquiao are that good.
There might only be two of them, but it is brilliant for boxing to be talking about top, top performers around the same weight, at the same stages of their career and at the same time.
Everyone out there has their leveller, the one man that can beat them, or they can't beat; maybe Manny Pacquiao is Floyd Mayweather's...
Why?
Ricky Hatton of course, found his leveller in the shape of Floyd.
Seeing him talk on Friday Fight Night last week and seeing the rumours growing about his comeback, I will keep this bit short.
Ricky, you have nothing to prove to anyone, you are not going to achieve anything you haven't already, so I only have one question for my old mate: Why?

I thought Hatton would beat Mayweather and Pacman, I was very wrong. I think Mayweather will beat Pacman. Size, skill, weight all in mayweathers favour. However, Mayweather will have to go into the trenches, a place he has never been. My prediction would be for FM to knock out Pacman, round 7 onwards.

Pacman no doubt the most improved fighter on the planet under Roach's guidance. And to keep carrying that power with him up in weight divisions is truely remarkable! However as has been mentioned...Floyd no sitting duck! Is there anyone in the history of the game more elusive of a punch? Floyd has a 6th sense of when his opponent is about to throw a punch...this instinctive 'Matrix -style' reactions cannot be taught...it is a natural gift! Also very few comment on his boxing brain...he is such a clever fighter and can literally flip game-plan with consummate ease and masterful precision during a bout! I feel he will make Pacman look like an rookie with his superior skills and ring savy. In the words of PrettyBoy..."Skills pay bills!"

Let's wait till Manny starts pounding Mayweather's body. Money may have the uncanny ability to deflect or evade head punches but if the body is the target it will be a different story. I am sure Roach can find a way to utilize Manny's quickness. The key would be to attack body this time and see how Money will take it.

I have to say as great as Pacman is i still prefer Mayweather to win,Cotto has not been the same since the Margarito fight and i feel the pre Margarito was a different fighter to the one who faced Manny,I still feel Manny would have won but i feel it would have been a lot tougher than it was. I just honestly cannot see anyway he can beat FMJ or how anyone can to be honest,Say Manny traps floyd against the ropes and throws of 6 lightning quick punches i can honestly say with floyds reflexes he could block all 6 and counter back,Pacman has never fought anyone like Mayweather or even a defensive boxer so has never fought anyone of his style,Manny is great on the counter as shown with his knockdowns of Cotto and Hatton and when he attacked against De La Hoya he never knocked him out,I bring this up because he wont counter Floyd he will have to attack and i feel Manny is at his best when his opponent attacks and his lightning fast speed puts his opponent down,Also Glenn i dont know whether you saw his post fight interview but Manny did not seem to keen on fighting Floyd

Manny Pacquiao.......Floyd Mayweather!!....Glenn what are you talking about?i read of your stuff Glenn, but for the first time i will disagree with you in all honesty. One factor that will always drive floyd is not money..like he said, but the fact that he knows that losing will not be acceptable in his record. That boy is boxing himselve!.I watched his interview, and i have no doubt that he knows his position in place history .....and Manny does not have what it takes to stop this Floyd.I will leave Floyd to answer you Glenn.....i know he will.......even though i will chose to have Floyd lose to having the heart of millions of Philipinos broken!!.......pity it won´t go my way.

Now im no bookie but !!!!!...............the record speaks for its self.Already mayweather shouting his mouth of about" its a no win fight for me !!" sorry PACMAN the whole way for me.

I'm a huge fan of both Mayweather and Pacquiaio. And I genuinely cannot split them if it ever happened. I agree with some of what's been posted here, for instance until Cotto lost his discipline he was hitting Manny regularly but without too-much effect. And I do thin Mayweather would have no problem hitting him, but Mayweather isn't a big hitter so Manny would probably walk through them! But I do think Mayweather would frustrate manny because I believe he is quicker (not by much but by enough!) For me it's a head versus Heart fight. The head says Mayweather because he's too disciplined, too clever and too fast. But my heart says Pac-man because it seems there's nothing that guy can't do!!! Either way it makes for a mouth-watering fight - if it ever happens!

As impressive as Pacquaio was, and fight between him and Floyd would be even at best for Pacman. I am now a beliver after the Cotto display, although I also believe he uses. steroids. Manny- Floyd is a toss up though I'd have to say Floyd greater versartility makes him the favourite

Harold Tackie says...
As brilliant as Pacquiao's performance was on saturday, people should not get too carried away and say that based on that performance that he will have the measure of Mayweather. Cotto is not Mayweather- he is faster, fitter, has better footwork, a better defence, head movement, and variety in his punching and defence than anyone has seen in boxing for a very long time. People thought that Mayweather would struggle against a fit, fast, unorthodox Zab Judah and ended up giving him a school. I look at Pacquiao as a more polished version of Judah but with a much higher work rate. However, with Pacquiao being the committed fighter he is, he tends to drop his hands when launching a combination and I see him getting caught with a succession of straight right hands from Mayweather- his favourite punch. Then there is the movement that Pacquiao will struggle with as he tends to move in fairly straight lines. He will have to elevate his game to a whole other level. I don't think this would be an easy fight for Mayweather as Pacquiao's work rate will causee him problems. but in that same breath, I don't think that Pacquiao will have greater chance than Ricky Hatton when he fought Mayweather. Another issue will be weight as Mayweather simply won't fight at a catch-weight- he's not naive enough to do that, which means it will be at wwelterweight which will mean trouble for Pacquiao as he won't be facing a fighter who has had to boil down to make the weight. And the fact that Mayweather hasn't been in a war doesn't mean a thing- why get involved when you really don't have to? The fact he is so composed in the ring means he can think clearly. Bottomline is that no one should draw any conclusions on what could happen based on a great night from Pacquiao.

Reply to Matt D..... Matt, did you read the article? Glenn even said "after watching the fight"..........AFTER! I was impressed by both Mayweather and Manny's last fight, but Glenn did say that AFTER that perfromance Floyd should be worried. As i am sure you are aware of all the problems De La Hoya had in making weight (they used IV drips right before the fight) and Ricky's camp was, well.............rubbish! Mayweather Sr is a joke, and should never have been picked, watched the 24/7 shows for that fight and you will notice the problems. The thing is, Pacquioa's last 2 fights before Cotto were against over the hill or under prepared fighters. Cotto was prepared. Yet Manny still dominated the BIGGER, STRONGER man. This is why Glenn has changed his mind, because now we know how good the last two fights were, it wasn't just luck that he got the opponents at the right time, prime Hatton and De la Hoya would have both struggled and ultimately lost against Manny. Cotto was a good fighter, and troubled manny early, but as soon as he got in his stride............game over.

Glenn FM will not only beet pacman, he will knock him out. Pacmans style as a "fighter" is typical as he is always open for a "good" boxer to his him. Now FM isn a good boxer, he is a great boxer. He will sting pacman with his sharp shots, and is likely to catch him off balance too. Speed is power. I dont know why everyone thinks this is going to be a close fight FM is the best thing since Sugar Ray Leonard. In terms of boxing skill.

Glenn, While I admit Pacman was brilliant at the weekend I think there has been a big knee jerk reaction that he will now beat Floyd. There is a valid argument to be had that Cotto was not the same after Margarito and his war with Clottey hardly helped keep him fresh. However to be fair Cotto showed plenty of heart and proved he is a fantastic fighter. When Cotto boxed Manny he had some good success but then tended to be drawn into a slug fest and got caught. Floyd wont fall into that trap he will stay on the outside and box/counter all night long, Manny struggled with a counter puncher like Marquez and Mayweather is the best in the business when he comes to sharp precise shots. As good as Manny is he is not Floyd "Money" Mayweather

Bill Bailey says...
I'm not so sure Glenn, it seems that everyone is jumping on the Pac bandwagon without actually looking with some perspective. The one thing that really caught my eye was how easily Cotto was managing to hit Pacquiao. Cotto, a natural left-hander, was tagging Pacquaio everytime he came forward, for as long as he could sustain it. Again the punch that was effective against Pacquiao was the right hand counter. Juan Manuel Marquez had an awful lot of success with his counter right hands against Pacquiao. So you need to bear in mind that Floyd will be hitting Pacquiao, A lot, with his best punch, a counter right hand. Plus consider that all Pacquiao's recent opponents have been tailored especially to be guys that will stand right in front of Pacquiao and trade- Mayweather will not. Mayweather won't get hit anything like the amount of times Cotto got hit, yet Pacquaio will have to deal with much more precise punches, quicker, sharper punches, coming back at him. He'll lose confidence in throwing his left, like he did against Marquez, because he'll be eating right hands straight after. All Mayweather has to do is keep out of range of Pacquaio's left hand. Can he manage it? I honestly think he can.The guy has the fastest reflexes I've seen, and can sense a punch coming before it's thrown. I honestly think Mayweather will stop Pacquiao in the later rounds- he will be fired up for it, and feel like he has a point to prove, so there will be extra sting in his shots, and he'll want to finish it instead of coasting to an easy points victory. Look for Mayweather to have alot of sucess with his fast double overhand rights, and for the shots to get heavier as the rounds go on. And you think Mayweather is stupid enough to stand and trade with Pacquaio? Why would he do that? Every weapon Floyd has is what has been proven to be effective against Pacquiao. If ever there was a fighter to neutralise and level Pacquaio, it's Floyd!

Hatton looks and would fare much better as a Promoter than as a boxer, after that devastating loss to Pacquiao. The whole of UK's boxing aficionados (that's including me and you) should be able to convince Ricky to preserve the respect left for him as a boxer. Going against JM Marquez (or any fighter for that matter) is not the right route to take. He should hang up his gloves permanently. Isn't it much better to count money as a promoter, than count times of defeat as a boxer? (P.S. I saw Hatton last Friday Fight Night and he has balloned again in weight, how can he come back to the ring and fight again without me thinking same thing will happen like what happened in May this year? But, I'm in no way a JM Marquez fan)

Very well said! Now you can be proud that you're the first one (in the UK) on record to say "Don't bet against M Pacquiao" when he fights Mayweather. Even Mayweather won't bet against Manny, but this will be the only time he'd keep his mouth shut. Being the braggart that he is, being conceited and self-indulged that he has always been, how can he shout to the whole world that he is betting against himself when he faces the greatest of all time, Manny Pacquiao? He's always after money, so he knows he'll earn millions more when he puts his money on Pacquiao instead of himself, though quietly this time...

I have to agree. Manny was awesome. He has been awesome for his last 10 fights. Dont get me wrong Mayweather is the man to beat, and at his prefered weight it would be hard for Manny to do to Mayweather what he did to Cotto. Mayweather's defence is second to none but it is an exciting prospect to see how he handles Mannys speed and aggression. My prediction is the fight will last the full 12 with Manny taking it on a split decision.
