On Tyson's trail

Pt V - Following Mike, meeting Sam and knocking trainers over

Ricky's Diary Posted 7th November 2008 view comments

Today I ran around Sunset Park. I have been told that this is a running trail that was set up for Mike Tyson when he fought in Vegas.

It's a running track that goes around a lake. Every now and then there is an apparatus for people to stop and use to train on, with chin-ups or dips. Today was a steady five miles.

Then it was straight from running to the local radio stations to do some work to promote the fight.

Hatton and Peter: good chat

Hatton and Peter: good chat

At the gym I did four rounds with Dominic Salcido and four with Timothy Coleman. It was funny when I sparred with Dominic: his trainer, Victor, was standing on the apron which is about three foot off the ground.

As I hit Dominic he fell against the ropes and the impact sent Victor flying off the apron and onto the floor where he did a back-flip!

The distance is getting longer now - eight miles today. I am definitely fitter now than I have been in years and it feels like I have been in Vegas for ages.

Then, straight after, I knocked Dominic down with a jab. So within seconds I knocked over a sparring partner and his trainer! Both got on their feet and recovered well. Victor stays put in the corner now!

Fitter

Big heavyweight Sam Peter called into the gym today and watched sparring. He's a nice guy and we had a good chat.

Thursday's run was back up in the mountains. The distance is getting longer now - eight miles today. I am definitely fitter now than I have been in years and it feels like I have been in Vegas for ages.

Then it was back down to the gym for a workout with Floyd and Lee. Straight after training we nipped to Starbucks before sitting down to dinner.

All the while I keep in touch with my family by phone and I speak to my son Campbell whenever I can. This is the longest I have been away from him and I can't wait to get home to see him again.

After our meal we play cards and I am still not doing too good. Nobody is making an out-and-out killing but I would say our Matt is ahead.

Before I lost too much, I nipped down to the outlet to get some new DVD's. I am mostly watching comedies before I hit the hay for an early night.

Come on RICKY! It's always so refreshing to see that you're just one of the guys back home; and so impressive to see that you're the consumate professional when you're in the ring! Cheers! Bonne Chance! Stay focused and kindly knock Paulie out! In fact, treat him like a Rock Em Sock Em Robot, and knock his block off! I'll be watching and cheering for you with my mates here in Florida just like tons of folks around the world - we're all behind you and count you as one of us!

Sounds like you're really enjoying the training schedule Ricky, and from what i've read recently you seem confident in your fitness. I hope that the fact that it's now your 2nd fight back down at light-welter will have a positive bearing in the result, cos fighting Paullie as the first fight back at your natural weight might have been pretty hard on you physically, and i mean that with all respect to Juan Lazcano. I am confident that you can shut Paullie up and give him a beating, would be great to see you stop him or maybe even knock him out! I have a lot of respect for your achievements in Boxing and i really do think that Paullie might under-estimate you, as he has given me the impression that he thinks you're 'past it', I hope you prove him wrong....and emphatically too! All the best Ricky and i look forward to seeing Floyd's influence in your fight, I think it could prove to be a great career move for you, no disrespect to Billy G, as he is a legend, but you simply needed to move on! C'mon Ricky!!
