Sky Sports expert Paul Merson looks ahead to this weekend's live offerings.....
Merse on Aston Villa v West Brom
Merse on Wigan v Tottenham
Aston Villa v West Brom
West Brom don't get nearly enough points away from home but they always have a go and this should be a good game.
Redknapp: more woe?
They'll have a chance at Villa Park and a lot will depend on who's fit for Villa. Having seen them in the FA Cup last weekend, they're not as formidable when they haven't got their full team out. Gareth Barry, Martin Laursen and Gabriel Agbonlahor have hardly missed any games and I don't think their squad is anywhere near strong enough. When push comes to shove they're a little bit short.
Fair play to Tottenham for having the bottle to pay double bubble to bring him back - a lot of sides would have been too embarrassed to pay that kind of money for a player they sold 12 months ago.

Quotes of the week

Wigan v Tottenham
1.00pm, Sun, Sky Sports 1&HD1
There's no doubt Villa have done absolutely brilliantly so far - if they win on Saturday they'll be one point behind Chelsea. But the Villa team picks itself at the moment, Martin O'Neill doesn't need to spend much time in his office thinking about who to leave out, so I'd say they need to bring in a few options in January.
Villa struggle when teams go there and put 10 men behind the ball (they've had four 0-0s at home this year) but with the way West Brom play this will be like an away game for Villa. The Baggies have won two out of three league games, they're on a bit of a roll and they'll go there with confidence.
Booming Baggies
This is a free game for Tony Mowbray. They'd have taken four points over Christmas and they got six. A month ago they'd have looked at a trip to high-flying Villa and wondered what they might get out of it, but now it's a free game and they can go out and attack Villa.
I believe if West Brom had lost to Man City they would have been relegated. Instead they won it and now they're the team with momentum in the relegation scrap. A win on Saturday would take them out of the bottom three for a while, but it could still go the other way. Every team up to and including Hull are still in the dogfight so West Brom still have a lot to play for.
A couple of good results can send you flying up the table and not many teams have been able to get a run going, so fair play to West Brom. They deserve it because they play good football.
PAUL'S PREDICTION
Home win - This will be a very, very difficult game for Villa, but I do think they will win. I'll go for 2-1 or 3-2 to the home team because it certainly won't be a walkover.
MERSON'S MAGIC MAN
The Villa supporters - The expectations are rising at Villa Park and it's important the crowd don't see this as a certain three points. If they turn up thinking the game is a gimme then Villa will struggle - we've seen it with other teams who've been in this position. The fans need to get behind them as they have been and they could be the most important aspect of the game on Saturday. It's a local derby so I'm sure they will.
Wigan v Tottenham
If it wasn't for Jermain Defoe I wouldn't hesitate in declaring this match a home banker.
I watched Tottenham against Burnley on Tuesday night and they were shocking in the first half. If they'd been playing a Premier League team there'd have been no point in coming out after the break, but Harry Redknapp once again proved what a good manager he is by sorting them out at half time.
People still talk about West Brom, Stoke, Hull and Middlesbrough as teams that could go down, but they don't seem to put Spurs in the equation. If you ask me Tottenham are right in that relegation scrap. They are more disadvantaged than some of the others because they're a big club and everyone raises their game against them so if they don't improve they are in major, major trouble.
Defoe will be a massive, massive help to them. He's the nearest thing to Ian Wright in the modern game and I rate him very highly. Fair play to Tottenham for having the bottle to pay double bubble to bring him back - a lot of sides would have been too embarrassed to pay that kind of money for a player they sold 12 months ago. It's an absolutely brilliant deal because I can't see where you're going to find a better centre forward in the transfer window. There won't be a better striker than Defoe bought in January.
After seeing Spurs the other night he's a certainty to start against Wigan and personally I'd pair him with Luka Modric. I'd like to see Modric in a free role feeding Defoe because he gets beaten up in central midfield; they should give him the freedom of the park to go out and hurt people.
Latics on a roll
Wigan have got some momentum going with three wins in a row and everything seems rosy. But sometimes when that happens teams take their foot off the pedal and before you know it they've lost five on the trot and are back in the bottom five again.
We've seen teams like Bolton and Middlesbrough go on good runs and then all of a sudden they can't win for toffee. Wigan still need a couple more wins in the next three or four games to say they are safe. Not a lot of teams can win four on the trot but Wigan could do it this weekend - but they know they're just as capable of losing five on the trot. However, I'd be very surprised if they went down this season.
PAUL'S PREDICTION
Home win - Defoe could be the difference for Spurs, but I just think Wigan will be too strong for them. Tottenham can't afford to play like they did in the first half against Burnley, but that performance wasn't a one-off. If Wigan get an early goal they could overpower Tottenham and win 3-0.
MERSON'S MAGIC MAN
Antonio Valencia - He's a really good player and represents the strength that Tottenham haven't got all around the pitch. I'm not surprised Real Madrid have been linked with him. Spurs are too lightweight and the power and pace of Wigan will be too much for them.

Hi all. Just new to this so please give me a break if I make a fool of myself. Anyhoo, I believe Spurs are a much better team with Defoe's readmission and I'm hoping he can prove himself on the pitch this Sunday. Good Luck The Lads!

Spurs fans can criticise Merson for his comments all they like, but apart from the scoreline (which will depend on if we turn up or not) he is 100% spot on. We are far from being out of trouble, as painful as it is, we have to wake up and realise we're not too good to go down! They said Leeds were too good and that West Ham were too good in the past, and although West Ham have bounced back up, Leeds have fallen flat and will never be the same again. The team and everyone else needs to get to grips with that. At least we're going in the right direction, got Defoe back to partner Pavlyuchenko, Stephen Appiah is on trial and hopefully we'll get a left winger. Although i do think Jamie O'Hara is a fantastic young player and gives real grit and tenacity that we've been lacking, and we can bring Giovani on in the last 1/4 to really show what he's about. Bentley has been a flop. You can talk about giving him time to settle all you like, fact is we signed him primarily for his set piece ability. I've not seen anything, even a corner, which has proved his ability. O'Hara took set pieces against Burnley and they were fantastic. SO, we are coming to grips with things again, but we're not out of trouble, as long as we keep the faith and Defoe doesn't write off a Ferarri that breaks his legs, we'll be fine!

I find it hard to beleive Merson genuinely beleives wigan can walk this one 3-0. I can have no complaints with Wigan going in to the clash regarded as the favourites as theyve proved on regular occasions that they can mix it with the big boys this season. We will face an entirely different proposition to the Wigan side we brushed aside in the F.A cup and our home form this season has left alot to be desired. However this game will be a tight and well matched affair with a single goal likely to nick the three points. The capture of Jermain defoe and a surely inevitable return to wembley for our boys will give us the extra morale needed to snatch it . 1-0 to the lillywhites and perfect return for Jermain!

Can't say I agree with you Paul. As a neutral, Liverpool supporter, I have been impressed with Villa and think they'll win by at least 2 goals against West Brom, who seem the whipping boys this season, you haven't even given Ashley Young a mention?! As for Wigan - Spurs, it could go either way, I think it'll be a draw but there will be goals, as both teams have defensive frailties and the attacking players to expose it, maybe 2-2 with the key men being Valencia and Modric, Zaki to grab a goal as well.

Merson is correct about defoe, however 3-0 defeat not too sure. I think a similar outcome to the away game at west ham hard fought but away win with ledley back into deal with heskey, defoe keen to impress will get one and would not be surprised to see o'hara smash his fifth goal of the season. Spurs need more passionate players like him and dawson to climb up the table.Bentley dropped for lennon and o'hara in to balance the team out. Would not play modric and zokora in the middle away from home.

Wigan will go into the game thinking they can win, but I disagree. Harry Rednapp was good enough to pull his team together to pull 4 back agaisnt us. He completely changed his sides playing with just one substitution. He can certainly do the same against wigan. Spurs will have no problem seeing wigan off.

Are all you Spurs fan blind? Did you not see the weakened team we played against you? Theres no way you're going to be able to handle the likes of Heskey and Zaki, both missed the F.A cup game. We'll see soon enough who comes out on top.

Villa are on form and the fans are rocking the place left right and center every away match all you can hear is the villa faithfull making it a home match for villa( why we have best away record in the league) even tho villa are buy far the better team over the W.B.A both teams are the same in derbys but as we always have the 12 man home or away with the villa faithfull we will get 3 points and we will win buy 2 goals .

Im over the moon that we have signed defoe and do believe he will have a huge impact on the spurs eam. However, i dont wont to be getting carried away,we struggled to beat a fairly weakend wigan team at home in the cup and i think it will be a very tough game for us because wigan are on a roll at the moment in the league. I'll be happy with a point! 1-1, but hopefully with some of defoe's magic he can inspire spurs to a unlikely away win?? other news, i dont think bentley should start, rumours circulating that he could be sold, i wouldn't be too bothered, he hasn't been performing ina spurs shirt and i know he's a life long spurs fan but he just hasn't cut it. Myabe stuart downing would be a good signing after all?

Alex Smith (Derby County fan) says...
I can see were Paul is coming from with Tottenham but you really cannot judge teams by cup ties. If you did you would think Derby would be top of table in the championship due to the performance against Manchester United. Wigan only won their last game by a penalty and after Tottenham lost against West Brom they will have a point to prove. I am not saying Wigan can't win but I think it will be much closer than a 3-0 victory to Wigan.

I totally disagree with Mr Merson. I think this will be a tight encounter with a single goal likely to separate either side. I hope Defoe's Debut magic will kick start our quest to fly up the table in order for a mid-table finish. My prediction 2-1 Spurs - Defoe, Pavlychenko both to score.

Kelvin Brown (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...
I think we'll come unstuck against Wigan, because I think Redknapp is tactically naive and don't believe Defoe is the answer. We should never have sold Kaboul to Portsmouth. Our defence was in disarray when we played Burnley, who I must say gave us the runaround. 2-0 defeat

Paul Harrison (Wigan Athletic fan) says...
I think its a fair comment but 3 -0 to wigan, i dont think so. Im goin for a 2 - 1 to wigan . Has for all them spurs fans who think the win in the cup will reflect the league game then they are going to be seriously let down as we rested most of our team for that match and u struggled to beat us when u played a full strength side.

Michael Seddon (Wigan Athletic fan) says...
I can't quite see this as a 3-0, 2-0 yes. The team Wigan put out in the cup was much changed from the recent line-ups so basing predictions on that game is pointless - which I why I assume Mr Merson has ignored that game. Defoe will be keen to get on the scoresheet no doubt, but with Chris Kirkland or Mike Pollitt back between the posts he'll have his work cut-out. Wigan have been playing well recenty and have put in strong performances, completely outplaying Newcastle for one, although only just getting a narrow victory in the end. I see spurs to be on a similar level to Newcastle at the moment so a convincing win for the Latics should not suprise anyone.

Kevin Rooney (Newcastle United fan) says...
Gawd, I hope Spurs and my team Newcastle are good enough to pull away from the bottom three. However, as each week goes by we seem to be making it tougher for ourselves. Newcastle play West Ham and Tottenham are at Wigan - a few seasons ago these were banker wins for Spurs and the Toon. It just goes to show you how far both have fallen from grace that Wigan and West Ham are the bookies' favourites for those matches. Graham Taylor on SSN earlier this week was spot on - the six teams leading the way in the Premiership have no on-field and minimal off-field problems. Could you imagine Wenger, Moyes, Ferguson, Benitez, O'Neill or Scolari being told what players you were going to have a la the Keegan saga. It's not so long ago that Villa and Everton had seasons in the bottom six so hopefully Spurs and Newcastle can learn from their wrongs. On a final note it was sickening to find out the toon would have been sold only for that Madoff guy in the States depleting the coffers of a potential buyer.

3-0 to Wigan?? Don't put your house on it mate ;-) As for Spurs being right in the relgation scrap thats a load of tosh. In a couple of months Spurs will be comfortably midtable and the likes of Stoke, WBA and Blackburn will be scrapping it out at the bottom. With Sunderland, Newcastle and West Ham not much furhter ahead. Hopefully next season after missing out on qualification for the champions league your precious Arsenal will be the next club to financially implode after West Ham. Happy days....

Villa's last home game against Arsenal was fantastic. Even at 2-0 down, the whole crowd were still very optimistic about getting something out of the game. I remember saying to the Mrs in the 89th minute, "There's gonna be one more chance for Villa", and sure enough Zat Knight does the business. There has been a huge change a Villa Park, and I have not felt the place rock as much as recent weeks....... I firmly believe that the Villa faithful played a massive part in the point gained against Arsenal. On a different note, Paul Merson is always gonna say good things about the Villa! I remember seeing him down Villa Park last season, and watching him celebrate (quite excitedly!) as the goals rained in against Birmingham City in the 5-1 demolition! What a legend! The Holte End salutes you!

I'll be gutted if Spurs don't pick up atleast a point away to Wigan. I agree Wigan are on a roll, but DeFoe will be so eager to score on his second Spurs debut, i think they'll find it hard to stop him. The only thing that does worry me, will be the state of the pitch! Should be alright taking into account Wigan's rugby league season hasn't started yet. I can see Spurs snatching this 2-1.
