Big fillip for Scolari?

Merse says Chelsea will be happy with a point

Paul Merson Posted 8th January 2009 view comments

Sky Sports expert Paul Merson looks ahead to this weekend's live offerings.....

Man Utd v Chelsea

This probably is the biggest game of the season so far - and it definitely is if you're a Chelsea fan. They're on a bit of a blip at the moment, but if they lose this game it'll be a crisis at Stamford Bridge - and I would use that word.

Scolari: decisions to make

Scolari: decisions to make

They've got to try and sort the team out. In the past they were very efficient and if they went 1-0 up it was game over. Now they're trying to entertain but it means you can get at their defence. If Ricardo Carvalho and John Terry play together they're fine, but that hasn't happened for a while and they are vulnerable.

For me, Deco hasn't done enough and I don't understand why he wasn't substituted at half time against West Ham a few weeks ago. Luiz Felipe Scolari took off Michael Ballack instead and it makes you wonder what's going on.

I can't think of what Deco's done since the first game of the season. I can't see how he can be in the team ahead of Ballack and Frank Lampard.

Quotes of the week

Man Utd v Chelsea
3.30pm, Sun, Sky Sports 1 & HD1

Ballack's a big-game player, but I can't think of what Deco's done since the first game of the season. I can't see how he can be in the team ahead of Ballack and Frank Lampard.

Up front, Didier Drogba has to play and I would play both him and Nicolas Anelka. These players are good enough to play 4-4-2.

In most games I would play a diamond in midfield with Joe Cole at the top, plus Lampard, Ballack and a holding midfielder because the full-backs are good enough to play as wingers. A lot of their attacking play comes from the full-backs and they cause all sorts of problems for opponents.

Winging it

But against Man United the full-backs need some protection because of the threat of Cristiano Ronaldo. Whichever side he plays on, the full-backs will need to be careful going forward and will need some protection from midfield. They can't go gung ho

United don't look like letting in a goal at the moment. They're not playing great, they've only scored four in their last six league games but if you can keep a clean sheet you'll be fine. In the long run, I'd rather be winning games 1-0 than 4-3.

You need a good defensive record and like Liverpool, United have that. But Rio Ferdinand might miss out this weekend and that's why I think Chelsea should go with two strikers. Jonny Evans and Nemanja Vidic struggled against Derby in midweek and that night they weren't playing against anybody of the class of Drogba and Anelka. Evans is going to be a good player but is he ready for a big game like this?

I think Chelsea should go 4-4-2. That would give the full-backs protection and would cause problems for the United centre-backs. That will be their best chance to get something out of the game - although I can see Scolari setting up the way he always does.

Chelsea would be over the moon if they could get a draw from this game, but I'm not sure United would be quite as happy with a point. They've done all of the hard work in playing all the big boys away. Now they've got to beat them all at home.

PAUL'S PREDICTION
Draw - Chelsea have a good record there and United don't let in many goals so I'm going to go for a 1-1 draw. I don't like picking draws, but it's a game that neither team can afford to lose. Chelsea would be happy with that - and so would Liverpool and Arsenal.

MERSON'S MAGIC MAN
Ricardo Carvalho - I'm a big fan of John Terry, but I think he's a better player when Carvalho's in the team. It's the same with Ferdinand, who is always better when Vidic plays. You can be the best defender in the world, but you need a partner and it's vital for Chelsea that Carvalho is back.

Im a liverpool fan, but regarding this game, i see a close game but utd just having the edge 1-0, with rooney the scorer, ronaldo isnt what he was last season, but wayne looks on top of his game, also the the fact lpool dropped 2 points at stoke , utd always seem able to take advantage, wud love a draw or even chelsea win , would rather battle chelsea than utd, just get the feeling utd are getting ready to strike.....

Steve Linn (Chelsea fan) says...

Today is the biggest test for big Phil. If we lose thats the title gone.If we lose at Southend Wednesday night that will be the end of him. The biggest mistake that has happened to Chelsea since Roman took over is the lose off Jose. Decco is not the right person for our midfield when we have Lamps and Ballack. Against Southend why didnt Big Phil play our top striker? 17 goals in a season so far ?? As for Big Phil not playimg Joe for the full 90mins does my head in..Decco plays 90mins and many off his games he has played total rubbish. Why ?

Dolapo Ojulari (Chelsea fan) says...

Scolari need to play a 4-5-1 pattern with drogba upfront. A tight midfield of Mikel, Deco, Lampard, Cole and Ballack would give the Reds trouble to handle. Also with Carvalho back in the team to pair Terry, Chelsea would be hard to crack. I see the game ending 2-1 Chelsea.

Tunji George (Manchester United fan) says...

this is going to be a tight game as both side current forms are nothing to write home about but with all things be equal i think man united is going to carry the day this is just a replica of last season when man utd didnt start the season well struggling with a 1-0 win while chelsea started well but got to a point started fading out and with that form they came to old trafford and were beating 2-0 and after tha win united gained their form and were unstoppable and with all the both teams complete no one would have any excuse of losing but i think united have a better chance of playing at home having in mind that they were forced to draw at stampford bridge in the first half of the season. The game will be won in the midfield though man u indepth strenght not that better than that of chelsea but playing at home give them the better chance also liverpool dropping 2points yesterday will gingered them and inspired them to a 2-0 win over chelsea

I cant see Chelsea losing this match with terry and carvalho in the starting line up having said that united would come strong to overhaul chelsea which is why i believe its going be a hard fought battle, i dont understand why scolari plays deco in the starting lineup, i'm sorry deco is not chelsea's standards for me he would fit into a newcastle or aston villa side, i hope scolari starts J.cole and M.ballack together which would give us a better chance of winning the match, its going to be an entertaining game, it has a 2-2 written all over it...... Scolari to be sacked and R.Mancini to be the next chelsea coach.......

Josh Omokaro (Chelsea fan) says...

Anything short of victory is a disappointment to Chelsea fans. This is a very big match and as such the world is going to focus on it. The players need to put up a good fight. Ferguson knows Ronaldo has 4 key national team mates in Chelsea who are very familiar with his style of play. I have a feeling that Ferguson will tactically put a game plan of having Ronaldo to distract Chelsea players so as to setup other United players to do the damage. Scolari , beware of this ! Didier Drogba cant , I repeat cant afford to stay on the bench because he is a big match player. I prefer to see 4-4-2 formation . Another vital advise is that , Bosingwa and Ashley cole to always learn to fall back to their positions on time otherwise they would pay dearly for it. Chelsea players should watch out for provocation from Evra , Rooney , Ferdinand and Vidic . Stay cool to avoid being silly. United no doubt is a fantastic side, but today is JUDGMENT DAY 2 for them . My first team selection for this match goes like this : Cech, Bosingwa, Terry, Carvalho , A Cole, J Cole, Ballack, Obi, Lampard, Anelka, Drogba, I would cherish Chelsea today¿s victory as a new year gift to me. The BLUES go for Victory !

I think chelsea needs too look at all there games the same they keep relaxing and not geting what they need at the end of the season come may it will be the games like west ham and those games that will count they need to be stronger at the back i fell if alex wants to go let him go becouse he has show that he do's not have what it takes to be at my team chelsea is great but they can be greater even better than man utd

Sammy Nwagbara (Chelsea fan) says...

Chelsea is a graet club and has been very solid when the special one was there but since the arrival of Scolari all that is gone, dont understand why he cant play Drogba and Anelka up front. scolari's formation is the main problem the team has. I sincerely admit he is a good coach but certainly not a good tachnician well that serves Abromovich rigth cus he threw away a priceless jewel in Morinho. about the game bethween Man utd v Chelsea i think is going to be a draw cus the players have their pride at stake.

Anthony Babiolakis (Liverpool fan) says...

My heart hopes Chelsea win but my head says United. Fergie has started his mind games again now with Rafa, and it appears Rafa's taking the bait, just as Keegan did 12 years ago. Come on Rafa, let your team do the talking on the pitch. Fergie's sole aim with these mind games is distraction from the task at hand, and he only does it to managers who he sees as genuine threats.

Michael Newton (Manchester United fan) says...

This really is the game to kick united's season into gear. We have clearly been a little lacklustre in front of goal this season, but these kinds of run never last with the top teams. Sir Alex and the players know the importance of this game, particularly with Chelsea stuttering of late and Liverpool drawing with Stoke today. I expect Sir Alex to really fire up the team beforehand to produce a lightening first 20 minutes. An early goal to set the tone for a dominant performance. 2-0 United.

Ian Foulkes (Manchester United fan) says...

I don't think it will be plain sailing for Man Utd 2moro, far from it. Chelsea may be going through a blip, but they are a quality side and i believe have a good money who doesn't have the funds to buy the players he wants, like the "arrogant one" did!! I think we can win, but we need ferdinand at the back with my hero vidic, otherwise drogba will destroy evans!! My prediction is 2-1, i think Berbatov will be crucial in the second half of the season and will get a goal 2moro.

Barrie Moran (Manchester United fan) says...

I think simon made a valid point with the return of Patrice Evra.He is vital to Uniteds attack and defence a lot of uniteds goals have come from passes or crosses from the left this season that must say something of Evras ability. It will be a close game with both teams not being able to afford to lose but i will go for a 2-1 win Manchester United

Uzoken Uzoken (Chelsea fan) says...

I just cant bear it as I see the blues turns white. This is very sad but sometime good things come in a rought way. You never can tell. But Scolari has to work very hard and we must have to surpport him even the Great Man him self Ibrahim Morvic. We need a revolution and we must start from our players no player is bigger than the club so any players that is not fit in a match should be removed immediately,

Dabipi gordon Sunday (Chelsea fan) says...

Scolari..Read Paul Merson's comment...its the simple truth of the matter. i cannot add nor subtract, i have repeatedly told my fellow chelsea fans that, one of our biggest problem is Deco playing ahead of better players like Ballack and Joe Cole. The creative midfielder Scolari is looking for is Joe cole..he is d best dribbler and he can shoot with both legs, we have seen him doing those thing for a very long time...remember our match against Barcelona when we won 4---2 and our game again man u, when we won 3--1 in the 05/06 season at old trafford...those goals by Joe cole, were vintage Joe cole...Deco has been making several wrong passes that has put us under lots of pressure...I belived that, if Lampard had scored before Joe cole was substituted in our game with fulham, Deco would have been changed for Ballack to come and consolidate The midfield and support the defence...Scolari ...Please! please!! please!!! listen and use Drogba all the time, he is not only chelsea's best attacker, he is one of the best 4 attackers in the world..he is an asset other teams crave for.. Make us hold our heads high by putting the right team to beat man united, yes we can beat them at old trafford, do not look for a draw..you have not won any match against the big four, this is your chance to prove that you can do it.

Dickson Yu (Manchester United fan) says...

A draw will be a good result for Chelesa and they would have a better chance to win if they play 4-4-2. If Alex Ferguson is happy for a draw in mind, then I think their chance to win the title will be a in a blow by losing two points at home against a less sharp Chelesa this season. By imaging the busy schedule ahead for Man United, they should minimise the gap between the leaders as much as possible from now.

Danny Heslop (Manchester United fan) says...

Hopefully our attacking force should prove too much for Chelsea. Its not clicked this season but i feel a strong performance against one of the top four is what United need to kick on and go on the run that we know United are capable of. We are keeping clean sheets for fun but need to start taking our chances at the other end especially against the big teams. We are within touching distance of Liverpool and Chelsea with all the difficult away games out of the way. It Should be an interesting second part of the season once we go on a run and gain the confidence i cant see anyone stopping us. Im going for a 2-0 win for the Mighty Reds.

Posted 10:03 10th January 2009

Craig Billington (Manchester United fan) says...

I know everyone seems to be gunning for a 1-1 draw, but i think Chelsea could be on the end of something big tomorrow. Chelsea have a great team but their form against the other top three teams has been questionable, just like United's. Although we all know that towards the second half of the season, United always manage to turn up the heat and regain their position within the top two. In recent games, ecluding the Derb match, United have been performing brilliantly but only scraping 1-0 victories. Sometime soon the goal drought has to end and what better a time than when United play their only title rivals for this season? I think Chelsea will give us a game tomorrow but i'm going for a 2-0 win tomorrow.

Posted 09:17 10th January 2009

Russell Morgan (Arsenal fan) says...

I personally can't see United settling for a draw. Chelsea are looking a bit shaken of late losing to Liverpool at home then we show up and come back from behind. Chelsea I think need to let Phil bring in some new players that aren't all from the Mourihno era, as they all must miss him, he was a phenomenal manager. But without that confidence I think United can win this one 2-0 with maybe Drogba getting a few chances but not to big of a scare for Man. U. Also i think if United win all of their upcoming matches they will be within one point of Liverpool's current point total so just extra incentive... Heh as if Rafa's rant about Fergie wasn't enough to make him have his players respond for him.

Posted 05:07 10th January 2009

John Kenny (Manchester United fan) says...

As a United fan, all i can see, is a United win, probably, 2-1. If Chelsea do score , i think it will be from a set play, with Lampard, being the obvious candidate, from a penalty or free-kick. I think Fergie has a few important decisions to make, namely , who to play at right back, Neville looks ' shot' , Rafael, a great prospect, might be caught out, by the size of the occasion. Who does he play with Carrick in midfield? Scholes,a legend, but , the worst midfield tackler ,in the history of the premiership! might prove a liability, we need 11 players on the pitch! Anderson, very erratic, leaves us with ,Fletcher.A couple of years ago, most reds, wouldn't have put him on the bench, never mind picked him!The improvement in his game, has been noticeable to all.Up front, Rooney can ' Boss' Carvalho, while Berbatov has the size and guile to out fox,Terry, who has looked,' Sluggish' lately. The result of this game, while important, will not decide the title, United's proven ability to dominate the '2nd half' of the season,WILL! Been there and done it, no change this season! Fergie, messed with The Fat Waiters head, took the bait, a la Keegan,How pathetic did he sound today ?

Julius Okeke (Chelsea fan) says...

Scolari's got a problem playing big teams. I personally think he should remain a national team coach, as he is not used o the pressure of managing a week in week out club side. He started good but ran out of strategies as the pressure increased. He can well beat a small team 5-0 but in a big match, even as a Chelsea fan , i am now afraid to put my money unlike in he days of the 'special one'. But I think Sunday's clash boils down to the players just like it was with Avran Grant. They are world class, though some of the them are kind of ''expired". But with the right formation " I mean starting Drogba" even if not with Anelka, we should expect something
