Half-term report II

Beagrie's half-term report on each Championship club

Peter Beagrie Posted 27th December 2008 view comments

The Championship season is shaping up to be as exciting as ever with all to play for right throughout the division.

Wolves, Birmingham and Reading have set the early pace and there are glut of clubs tucked in behind them hoping to scrap it out to be in the play-off positions in May.

At the bottom we've seen former Premier League sides like Nottingham Forest, Charlton, Southampton and Norwich in the mix and the basement battle remains as intriguing as the race for promotion.

Beagire: finishes his reports

Beagire: finishes his reports

We've seen great goals, great players and plenty of managerial departures and arrivals so far this season and as the drama unfolds, rest assured you'll see it all on Sky Sports.

Our Football League expert Peter Beagrie has been right across the action from day one and in his final columns of the 2008 he delivers his end-of-year verdict on each club.

Monday December 29:
Blackpool v Wolves
7.45pm, Sky Sports 1 & HD1

Which players have caught Peter's eye so far this campaign? Has he been impressed by YOUR team so far? Read on for Peter's report on the remaining 12 clubs.

Norwich City

Norwich finished 17th last year and if you're looking for progression, there hasn't really been any. I saw their 2-0 defeat to Reading and they played a defensive formation with no Arturo Lupolior Wes Hoolahan and they're the type of individuals you need if you want to win games. They are leaving talented players out to go more workmanlike but it's difficult to get a foothold on games when you're defending for long periods. As far as I'm concerned the stars of their season have been the supporters, who generate an incredible atmosphere. They are the third-highest supported team in the division behind Derby and Sheffield United, but they haven't been served up many treats apart from that 5-2 win over Wolves.

Nottingham Forest

Forest have proved that tradition and former glories count for nothing and they've had a reality check this year. They lost some important people in Junior Agogo and Kris Commons and the loss of those goals explains why they are down at the bottom. I'm not surprised they are down there, but they have some fantastic youngsters coming through and I hope young Joe Garner, who they paid a lot of more for, can fire the goals to keep them up when he gets back to full fitness. Instead of being pessimistic, there is an element of realism among the fans and they are turning out in numbers to get behind their young team.

Plymouth Argyle

At the start of the season the natives were restless down in Plymouth and I felt for Paul Sturrock - but I said at the time if anybody could turn it around it was him. He came out and said he wanted the backing of the board and he got that. He was able to bring in some players who've had a magnificent impact, particularly Paul Gallagher with the goals he's scored and the effect he's had on the dressing room. I never doubted Sturrock for a minute but I did think they were in for a season of struggle at the bottom if they didn't have an influx of fresh talent. Paul deserves a case of champagne for Christmas for what he's achieved.

Preston North End

Alan Irvine has carried on where he left off last season. Preston were 21st when he took over but he guided them to a 17th-placed finish and this year they are challenging near the top. They play a 4-4-2 formation with not many stars, but plenty of good professionals who are a match for anybody on their day. One indication of how well Alan has done is the signing of Chris Brown from Norwich, who has breathed life into Preston; he's scored a few goals and acts as a focal point for the team. Preston are overachieving in my opinion, but their first XI rarely changes and it shows what continuity and consistency can achieve.

Queens Park Rangers

Everybody expected them to run away with the league, but I honestly didn't. Despite their billionaire owners, they've hardly spent anything in comparison to other teams in the division which is very strange. The stars for them have been Dexter Blackstock and Martin Rowlands who seems to be in a different position every time I see him. But I don't think QPR will make the play-offs unless they have some heavy investment. It will be interesting to see what happens in the transfer window - will they make a couple of singings to make everybody sit up and take notice? Flavio Briatore may have packed the directors' box with supermodels, but we're yet to see the sexy football he promised on the pitch.

Reading

I'm a huge admirer of Steve Coppell, a genuine man manager who commands respect. He held on to a few important players, including the division's top scorer Kevin Doyle. Another key player has been Stephen Hunt who is a little bit like one of those wind-up Christmas toys - you stick a key in the back and he just keeps on going and going. That boy never runs out of batteries and has done a job for the team from left-back. Twinned with his brother Noel they've been doing extremely well - maybe they could take over from the Mitchell brothers in EastEnders when they hang up their boots!

Sheffield United

I thought they'd be around fourth or fifth place this year and they are on target for that. They went on a great run when Kevin Blackwell took over last year and just missed out on the play-offs by four points. The star of the show again for them has been James Beattie, the penalty king, who they lost through injury at an important time last year. I'm sure Kevin would like to be higher up, but he's wise enough and ugly enough to realise this is a tough decision and it's where you are at the end of the season that counts. I think Kevin genuinely believes they are challenging for a promotion place, maybe not automatic, but probably top six.

Sheffield Wednesday

Brian 'Houdini' Laws has turned Wednesday into one of the biggest over achievers in the Championship. They should re-register the word "imminent" in the dictionary because the takeover at Hillsborough has been "imminent" for a season and a half. Perhaps "imminent" means "never going to happen" in Yorkshire! Despite having one of the smallest squads in the division, Marcus Tudgay has provided quality and the likes of Tommy Spurr at the back has been tremendous. There are reasons to be cheerful for Wednesday fans in these festive times - but they are aware that if they get three or four injuries this division could punish them. A rich oligarch to add four or five players to a wafer-thin squad will be top of their Christmas list this year.

Southampton

Southampton are a team I've always admired, but it's amazing how things turn around so quickly in football. Two seasons ago they were favourites for promotion, but now they are a selling club reliant on their prolific academy. Watching youngsters like David McGoldrick and Adam Lallana coming through the ranks has been a source of comfort for Southampton's fans and they play in the right manner. I don't know how long they can hold on to the likes of Andrew Surman, who is definitely a Premier League player in the making, so it's hard to know what to say to their supporters. They clung on in this division by their fingernails and it looks to be the same this time around. They are lightweight and they can be bullied, but at least they stick to their footballing principles. That's to be admired but will the fans accept that if they drop down a division?

Swansea City

Nothing much takes the smile off Roberto Martinez's face. His fellow countryman Jordi Gomez is knocking goals in for fun at the moment, while Jason Scotland and Ferrie Bodde - a Glenn Hoddle in a Swansea shirt - have been playing well. The squad is a United Nations, dominated by the Spanish, and their fantastic fanbase can be really pleased with the job that Roberto has done. He's a very honest guy and nothing is lost in translation with him - it's all pass and move and they are difficult to play against because they are so unpredictable. He's done really well and long may it continue.

Watford

It was disappointing to see Aidy Boothroyd lose his job, especially after they sold important players such as Darius Henderson, Danny Shittu and Marlon King. The Watford players know they weren't consistent enough last year and they let the manager down. Some fresh blood has come in now and it will be interesting to see what transpires. Their player of the season has been Tommy Smith, a man for all seasons, and the youngster John-Joe O'Toole could be a bit of a star for them, coming on as an impact player and getting everybody going with his enthusiasm.

Wolves

It's probably right that we discuss Wolves last because they've been a breath of fresh air. Mick McCarthy has built a young side and has given them the confidence to go and express themselves after missing out on the play-offs by a couple of goals last season. Michael Kightly is the most exciting man in the division, he's so creative on either the right or left wing. With Chris Iwelumo and Sylvain Ebanks-Blake they are the top scorers in the division and they play in the same attacking manner home and away. I'm a bit worried they might be a bit inexperienced and lightweight at the back. I watched them the other week and I'd have bitten all my fingernails off if I hadn't had my gloves on - I've had to put a new pair of gloves on my Christmas list as a result! They commit bodies forward, they have competition for places up front and at the moment you can say they are that stars on the top of the Christmas tree.

I would count us out of the running for the play off. We have the best squad in years. Hopefully a few more players in the transfer window and premier league here we come

Dan Scriven (Aston Villa fan) says...

I believe that Wolves has the hunger and the youth to finish top of the table, but with the experience the youth side has, i think they will do a hull in the prem, not like Derby County! As a life-long villa fan, i think that wolves would win from the hunger but fighting for 2nd place has to be Birmingham and Reading, I feel Reading may edge it with Doyle and Hunt both scoring well. Only 2009 will know though! Imagine, Mighty Villa, Baggies, Wolves, Blues, Stoke all up in the Premiership! I feel the midlands is becoming the county with the best teams. move aside London, the midlands is on the up! Come On You Lions!! UTV!!!

think we have as good a chance as anyone to get a playoff place. we are inconsistent but then again that can be ironed out with one or two astute buys in the window, nothing flashy. would like to see a couple players in on loan and maybe Helguson permanent and we can nick the last playoff place. saying that another season in championship footy would do some of our younger players good like balanta and ephraim to take them up a level and ready for prem. reading to win league if they keep doyle and hunt and birmingham to nick second from wolves who tend to have sloppy second halves of season

Alex Mifsud (Wolverhampton Wanderers fan) says...

I have been following Wolves since the late 60's, when we had a great team and use to fair very well in the 1st Division. This team reminds me of those golden days where i use to be able to be proud of the team I follow,. I do hope that the boys keep up the momentum and give us pleasure by winning the championship. Hopefully they will fair well in the premiership next year. I am sure that if we make it in the first year we will enjoy years of premiership football. Come you boys.

David Briggs (Sheffield Wednesday fan) says...

Your right Peter about the ever lasting takeover saga at Sheffield Wednesday, Im getting a bit fed-up of it now even as a hardcore supporter. Where did the russian disappear to that promised us £50m a year for 5yrs if we stayed up last season? wheres the chink that had billions gone? has Geoff Sheard actually got the money to finance a takeover...... turned out no otherwise he would have proved it like the club asked! As for Hudini (Brian Laws), He has done a great job when you consider the purse strings are firmly shut at Hillsborough. We have some very talented players coming through the ranks in the likes of Tommy Spurr and Mark Beevers who have attracted interest from Premier League clubs, who hopefully we will be able to hold on to now the club has reported a profit for the last 2yrs and Laws has been told he doesn't need to sell but we all know every player has his price, and being £25m in debt doesn't help. What Wednesday need is some investment so we can add some players to our extreamly small squad and dont have to start games like we did recently against Cardiff away with half the first 11 acadamy players! some of which still had to play out of there nomal positon (Nathan Modest playing on the wing when he is a striker on his first team debut)

for the first time in "my lifetime"! the wolves are shining brighter than ever ... am hoping that it stays that way for the rest of the season and here's to the baggies doing the great escape 2, but if not, never mind.

Andy Pitt (Swansea City fan) says...

i think wolves and reading are already up, i reckon cardiff(scum) brum, shef utd and palace will fight it out for play offs. even though im a swans fan i dont think we have the squad to go all the way till the end of the season. we have about 18 players that could be playing first team which isnt bad but we still need to strengthen. i am fully behind martinez he has only been with the swans for less than 2 yrs and he is only half way with the team he wants.

Posted 22:30 29th December 2008

Paul Darby (Birmingham City fan) says...

If anybody thinks Brum will go up then think again. We have a manager who is clueless who would struggle to manage a parks pub team. We have a board who run the club like aload of scrooges who dont give a dam about the loyal fans. Finaly we have players King Kev apart who try to play football like a bunch of strangers who dont no what a game of football is about. So go now alex, take your players with you.And as for the board just go because your the most hated in the country.

Philip Rushe (Wolverhampton Wanderers fan) says...

It is a credit to wolves that they stuck with Mick McCarthy and I hope that when (not if) they are promoted he will get the full support of the players and the directors and will be allowed to make the important decisions without interference. Mick's last experience in the Premiership was an unhappy one, however he will one day be the manager of a successful Premiership team and hopefully that will be Wolves.

David Smith (Nottingham Forest fan) says...

I'm surprised that Peter Beagrie wasn't surprised that Forest were in the bottom three. I think 2009 will see the team, that on the whole has played some good football and experienced some bad luck, bounce back and climb the table further. That shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

Posted 11:39 29th December 2008

Yiannaki Yianni (Nottingham Forest fan) says...

Oh how things have changed since this was written - Forest got rid of CC (thank you Father Christmas!!), now out of the bottom 3, Charlton are getting cut off as are Wolves on the other end. Now Derby are changing their manager and the scrap for relegation has taken a whole new meaning.... Bring on 2009!!

Mr Singh (Liverpool fan) says...

Who do you think will win the Championship this season? At the start of the season I predicted Birmingham but now feel there is no stopping Wolves. Long way to go mind you.

Dave Paskin (Wolverhampton Wanderers fan) says...

As a lifelong Wolves fan, this by far is the most exciting season we have had for many years, not just because of the position we are in the table. This is the first season that i have had seen when young and hungry players play ( not just for their wages, i could name many in the recent past ), with both pride and passion. I don't know what Merlin McCarthy feeds them on but this is the first season when players who don't feature in the starting 11 for a few games get a chance and still give 100%. We are playing some "pretty" football and winning, but when we need to we are grinding out some draws - even when it is a bit scrappy to watch, but i guess we all say it's the points that count. I guess at the moment everybody is saying Wolves, Reading & Birmingham top 3 ( not saying in that order ), but keep an eye on Burnley & Cardiff. They both have quality players who are very capable of sneaking into at least 3rd place. Who ever you support have a great 2009 !!!

Posted 23:21 28th December 2008

Alan Jones (Wolverhampton Wanderers fan) says...

Wolves are picking up the points when they arent even at the top of their form at the moment and that makes me think the future is promising. Our average line-up age is 23, and nearly all of our players are British/ Irish, which is a fantastic model for any football club and shows that foreign imports and has beens arent always the answer. However I would hope that Mick McCarthy could bring in somebody with experience to play in the middle, whether it's on loan or a short term contract. Things have been going great but we are a little naive because of our youthfulness sometimes and results like Norwich 5-2 Wolves show this. My prediction is Wolves to go up automatically along with Reading (who are far classier than Blues)... but if they didn't, we still have a bright future full of youngsters who are committed to the club. Its going to be a nailbiter!

Posted 20:49 28th December 2008

Louis Ronan (Preston North End fan) says...

Jack, I was quite impressed with your lot last couple weeks ago but don't think you'll make the playoffs too inconsistent. Surprised you don't think that we'll be in the mix, I think playoff places will go Brum Cardiff Sheff Utd and either Preston (depending on our away form and signing Wallace) or Palace. Burnley will not last the distance they always start falling after christmas, already started with 2 defeats against Barnsley and Donny Rovers. Come on Whites! Sign on Wallce!

Posted 18:54 28th December 2008

Dale Wood (Wolverhampton Wanderers fan) says...

Loving this season so far. I am very optimistic and think both blues and the mighty wolves will go up. Us top, blues second. I just hope we dont do what we did when a few years ago, when we let it slip and finished third! Its always in the back of my mind... C'mon me babbies...

Posted 23:39 27th December 2008

Jack Dearden (Queens Park Rangers fan) says...

Regarding your comments on my team, QPR. I totally agree, I myself never thought we'd walk away with the league, most R's fans would say the same. I hope we do make the play-offs, but I think it would be better for the club to form a stronger push next season with a more established squad. I feel our new manager Paulo Sousa will help us do this, he has impressed me so far. The Championship is way too unpredictable which is another reason why I don't bet on Championship games. Now we are at the midway stage it is easier to see where teams will be ending up, I think Wolves and Reading will finish as the top 2, then Brum, Burnley, Sheff Utd and hopefully QPR (though i feel a battle with Cardiff, Swansea and Palace is on the cards). The relegation battle is always interesting and it is a breath of fresh air to see us at the heady heights of 9th during Xmas which has alien to us for a good few years. here's for a successful 2009!
