It has come as no surprise to me that Swansea are doing so well in their first season in the Championship.
They're good enough to make the play-offs and I certainly wouldn't rule out a top-six finish. They're difficult to beat, organised and are good in possession of the ball - with plenty of threat and plenty of aggression.
Swansea: looking good
However, they've had some dog's luck of late. They've got a few players out with cruciate knee ligament injuries, including the guy I would class as their star man, Ferrie Bodde.
I know Jason Scotland shot all the goals last year but Bodde was absolutely sensational. He's out for the rest of the season and the impact of that is being felt.
There's a bit of a "united nations" at Swansea and the one man who encapsulates that is a guy called Scotland, who plays for a Welsh club in the English league - but he's from Trinidad & Tobago!

Quotes of the week
5.15pm, Sat, Sky Sports 1&HD1
They're on a remarkable run of eight league draws in a row, but perhaps four or five of them would have been wins if they'd had Bodde's added quality, class and goal threat. How the other players react to his absence will dictate the rest of their season.
It will be interesting to see what Roberto Martinez does in the transfer window and whether or not he can get a few more bodies in (no pun intended).
United nations
They will break the league record if they get their ninth draw in a row on Saturday and if nothing else that run shows how competitive and difficult to beat they are.
They don't concede many goals. I'm very impressed with the leadership qualities of their uncompromising centre-half Garry Monk and also the holding midfielder Darren Pratley who gives them some steel in midfield.
There's a bit of a "united nations" at Swansea and the one man who encapsulates that is a guy called Scotland, who plays for a Welsh club in the English league - but he's from Trinidad & Tobago!
We all saw what Jason Scotland did last year and we've seen a few glimpses of it this season. Maybe his game has suffered a little bit because Swansea are very patient and like to keep the ball, but he is more suited to a direct approach. However, he's still got nine goals this season so it is still working for him.
Top boss
Roberto Martinez has been a breath of fresh air. He's a very laid back guy, but he's also quite intense in that he wants to talk about football all of the time. He is always learning, always asking questions and always watching matches from all levels from all over the world.
Leading Swansea to the League One title by 10 points in his first season was no mean feat and his managerial record so far is outstanding.
Of his 101 games in charge of Swansea, he has won 52, drawn 30 and lost just 19. His win ratio is above 50 per cent, which is incredible when you consider 26 of those games have been in the Championship with a newly-promoted side.
He has got a lot of foreign players, but it shows that it can work if you have the right blend and the right attitude. His analytical approach had built a good system that suits his players and he can be very proud of the job he's done. I just think they need two more players to compensate for the injuries and they'll be fine.
Welsh race
We're going to see a race between them and Cardiff to become the first Welsh Premier League club.
Cardiff are probably ahead in terms of progress, but Swansea are hot on their heels. It's a flip of a coin to say who will get there first and I'm sure both Dave Jones and Roberto want that honour.
They'll both be keen to get one over their bitter rivals - and that could act as a carrot to both teams and will push them forwards.
Clarets clash
I'm expecting a good game when Swansea travel to Burnley on Saturday and I expect the Clarets to put their cup loss to Spurs to one side because they have a very experienced side.
Wade Elliott has caught the eye with his old-fashioned wing play and Martin Paterson has justified his price tag with 15 goals. Furthermore 'The Beast' Brian Jensen has had a renaissance in goal and has been the star of their Carling Cup run.
They are up in fifth with Swansea in 11th, but there's not that much between these two teams. I think it's going to be a very good and close game - hopefully with goals.
It could be a cold day up on that gantry so I'm hoping the football will warm the cockles of my heart!

CLARK ON COURSE
Peter, Quite simple really, I just have to ask you for your thoughts on Huddersfield's gamble on Lee Clark as manager, but with an incredibly able backroom staff behind him. I for one am really excited with this appointment, and I've seen a few fans of other clubs comment that they wish their club had made such an innovative appointment. It makes me proud to be a Huddersfield fan. Sam Hughes
PETER SAYS: I agree it will be a good appointment. He's served his apprenticeship at other clubs and he'll feel his opportunity has come at the right time. I played around the corner for their arch rivals Bradford, but even I can see Huddersfield is a tremendous club with huge possibilities. I know people who haven't had the best of times there, but they don't speak poorly of the place. Andy Ritchie, for example, says it's a fantastic club.
Huddersfield is a sleeping giant which needs to be reignited and this appointment has already caught the imagination of the fans. He has brought in a backroom staff with legends like Terry McDermott who brings an aura with them. Lee might not have much money to spend, but he's well connected and might be able to get few loan players in.
MIDLANDS MANAGERIAL MERRY-GO-ROUND
Happy New Year Peter. What do you make of Forest appointing Billy Davies? I'm worried that if things don't start well then his Derby connections might cause unrest among the fans. Thanks. Lee, Nottingham.
PETER SAYS: I think it's a good appointment for Forest. Billy is always very thorough in his preparation and when he was at Derby and Preston those sides were very difficult to beat. But you could be right Lee. If there are negative results, his previous connections might come back to haunt him - but if the team is winning then the Forest fans will soon forget he was at their arch rivals.
It's interesting for that part of the country that Nigel Clough should go to Derby this week. I didn't think he wanted to leave his comfort zone at Burton, where he ran things from top to bottom and had a chance of promotion this year. But not only is he hungry enough to test himself at a higher level, but he has taken the one job we all expected he'd never take because he will be in direct contrast with his dad's success.
I played with Nigel for England U21s and he was always quiet and unassuming, but he has a world of knowledge. If he listened to his father he probably knows all there is to know about man management, but I'm sure he'll do this job in his own quiet, understated way. I hope both Forest and Derby can turn things around with their new managers. With no ideas of grandeur it will be interesting to see if they can consolidate in the Championship.
AND FINALLY...
I tipped Fabian Delph of Leeds as my one to watch in 2009 and it was interesting to see how this 19-year-old was trying to drive his side on in their very ordinary display against Leicester. Despite all of the experience in that side, he was the one laying down the gauntlet and he then scored a sublime goal in the victory over Stockport.
Simon Grayson's most important bit of business in the transfer window will be trying to keep hold of him. Manchester United have been linked, but I'd rather see him go to somewhere like Fulham or Middlesbrough for the development of his career as he needs to play games. He's got an abundance of talent and he has that edge that Wayne Rooney and Alan Smith had when they burst onto the scene as youngsters. He isn't fazed by big stadiums, he feels he deserves to stand alongside the best players and he has the belief to go a long way. If Leeds want to push up the league they need to keep hold of him so it'll be interesting to see what happens in January.

Hi Cornellyjack ..... firstly lets get something straight what makes a big club is defined by thier history success over a sustained period and thier support and fan base...now lets look this is the lowest Leeds have ever been in 90yrs .... we were one of the most successful teams in years gone by our latest achievement albiet some 18 years ago now was winning the top division as for our support and fan base well thats simple 30K + in matches in the 3rd tier of football and still paying premiership prices is a credit to the loyal fans. Therefore with all that in mind yes Leeds are a big club .... as for you being bitter about robbo still is just sour grapes ... although he hasn't hit any sustained form for us as yet. Finally just for your information lee trundle was greeted with applause at ER on saturday and if we give him stick when he plays for an oposition team well thats football ... it would be a boring game if there was no banter, so my little jack boy may i suggest you go back to your little council ground and enjoy the rest of your own season and leave us to ours...

A Cardiff City supporter giving Swansea City credit? I never thought id see the day! But these are the miracles that Roberto is performing at our club. He has instilled a new professional attitude at the club to match Premiership clubs, this is paying dividends because although doing quite well under Jackett, we never really had the professional influence needed to progress. I feel the players Martinez brings in are players who are better than the ones we currently have which is great as it shows how we are improving and how the club is attracting very good footballers away from their hometowns and comfort zone (as Swansea is a fair way from big cities). I only hope that when times get hard and we may be in a relegation battle that the club sticks with Martinez as id be more comfortable being relegated with him at the helm than another manager keeping them up, as the football we play is enough to match many sides in the Premiership. All I can say is thank you Roberto and you have my undying support. Up the Jacks!

Peter thank you for your article. It's nice to see Swansea covered and your comments are accurate as usual. Good as it is to see their passing actually I think Swansea try to play too much football around their midfield at times and suffer from not having a plan B involving more penetration up front and round the wings. This was shown against Burnley when they didn't go for the kill and let 10 man Burnley feel they had a chance. You can also see how Swansea get frustrated and held by teams who don't try to play, especially at the Liberty where they have drawn 8/13. However we have made great progress, the players continue to develop throughout and with a few players back and a few younger players continuing to challenge, and Martinez still developing as a manager who can adapt his tactics, we should continue to entrench as a Championship side who might be able to go up.

Hi Peter, The comments made by Eddie Waring made me chuckle so much, i sure would love to remind him that we are now in the year of 2009, If i were him the less said about (once) a good side Leeds United the better!! the facts and league positions speak for themselves i'm sure that is plaine to see for everyone would you say,Oh and i think the answer to Eddie's rather sily remarks as to how Swansea can achive the succsess that they currently have is called good all round management, player respect, understanding Chairman, & togetherness simple,Also may i add yet again silly statement that clubs lift themselves when they play Leeds? clubs play each other to win games and the way you put your comments across you also put your team down and show no respect for the oppersition face it Eddie at present Leeds are a has been club mate remember Mr Grayson has only inherated G McAllisters team,So without sounding rude if i were a Leeds fan i would not start running other clubs down until you are in a position to do so and as for Trundle we had are good years with him and great management tactics bagged us the Swans cool million!! then you got robinson who tried to stall his decision on his future the weekend Leeds played in play offs but that backfired and he had to go because he was found out!! see thats not loyalty thats called greed so what great and better players do you have mate?? and Carlisle 0-2 wernt that a certain Mr Bridges whom scored against you @ home? a player Leeds bought from Sunderland for 5 million in 1999, I rest my case and would love the verdict of the jury (Swans 4 Life)

Hi Peter, With regards to the comments of Eddie Waring (Leeds United fan) , How can he say that Leeds are a "bigger" club than swansea? Surely a club is as big as the merrits it achieves on the field. I still dont understand how Leeds fans can say they have a "BIG"club and that other teams look forward to playing this "BIG" club. Its about time that they started to relise that they are just a "Normal" club in Yorkshire and are no better than any other league one team until they get promotion. I feel sorry for Lee Trundle, having to put up with this "BIG" club supporters shouting abuse at the team and he's gone there for a right beratting from a set of fickel fans. I hope it works for him, but i dont think him (Lee) or Andy Robinson really deserve such a lower league club at their time in their carrers. Still time will tell. Roll on May, then we'll all get to see who the "BIG" clubs are in league one.

It must be frustrating for Nigel Clough that his first game in charge at the Rams is called off - especially after he saw them stuff Man U (with a brilliant goal from ex-Forest player Chris Commons!) Let's hope that Forest can give Billy Davies a great start by stuffing Charlton (after they destroyed Man City and Norwich) and that both Derby and Forest can climb up the table and give the East Midlands a boost (Leicester will obviously be promoted this season)

Hi Peter. Eddie Waring here (remember me from our time at Scunthorpe pre seasons). Whilst I agree with you regarding your opinions on Swansea I find myself wandering how is it possible that Swansea can achieve the success that they currently are, yet Leeds United who arguably have both a more experienced squad and pound for pound are better players are struggling to find anything near their full potential and in a league lower. It,s understandable that clubs lift themselves when there playing against a club as big as Leeds however, Its that experience that should see these clubs off. I,m a great beleiver in fitness first (as you well know) and I have question marks against several Leeds players regarding their overall fitness capabilities, particuarly the likes of Sheehan, Michalik, Marques, Prutton and Robinson. And finally to add insult to injury we go and sign another salad dodger in the round shape of Lee trundle. Your opinions please.

Hi Peter, Just wondering about the situation my club Norwich are in at the moment. We are being linked with all kinds of our best players leaving us during the transfer window like Wes Hoolahan, Lee Croft and David Bell. Do you think it is the right time we changed the manager.

I fell that the comments said about swansea are very much true they play a very expansive and attracktive brand of football and string together even more short shap passes than any of the top 4 premier sides, i feel thats all swansea need is an out and out goal scorer that will get the valuble goals when needed. in my oppinion swansea have settled into this league and have proven they can compete with the bigger clubs no problem as soon as they find that bit of a killer instinct they will be challanging for a a place in the preiership.

As much as it kills me to say it being a bluebird fan, the Swans are by far and along way the best footballing side i have seen this season. we have played them twice and were played off the park both times.

Great column! As a Swansea season ticket holder, it's a breath of fresh air for a neutral to give a positive, and accurate, report on our football team. The fans down here have no doubt that Roberto will take us forward, and without the loss of Bodde this season, who knows where we could have been. Watch out for a little guy called Joe Allen in his place, not quite a Ferrie Bodde yet, but the guy's ability and compuser is excellent. He's done a terrific job in filling the gap Bodde's injury has left with high quality, consistent performances. I'm not personally sure where we'll finish thi year, but with a little bit of building next year, and with Ferrie Bodde back, i'm more than confident the Swans will be challenging the play-offs, at least!

I hope Leeds do manage to hold on to Delph,he is by far the most talented player in what lets face it hasbeen a poor midfield.........Leeds have at last got back on a stable financial footing and according to Mr Bates (who has despite all the critism done a great job)..Delph will of course move on to the premier league but hoefully not this season...If he does he will spend more time in the reserves than the first team he would learn much more playing fisrt team football at Leeds.
