Shocked and in awe

Scoring a surprise but the better man won, say the Panel

The Panel Posted 8th November 2009 view comments

The Panel were surprised, yet delighted by the decision to crown Londoner David Haye the new WBA heavyweight champion courtesy of a points victory over Nikolai Valuev in Nuremberg.

The 29-year-old won a majority decision to become Britain's first holder of a title in the showcase division since Lennox Lewis' retirement in 2003, ensuring a narrow win in the game of cat and mouse by flourishing in the final round and becoming the first man to genuinely rock the giant Russian.

Haye: a surprise points winner say the panel

One judge scored it 114-114 and the final two 116-112 and former cruiserweight king Nelson admitted he was shocked when the scores were read out.

"I'm surprised because going into the latter rounds (Haye's trainer) Adam Booth felt they were behind on the scorecards and actually needed the last three rounds.

"He knew that he had to turn it on and that's why he got the decision."

Glenn McCrory - a former world champion himself - was one of those that thought Valuev would be too big and too strong for the ex-cruiserweight.

But he was delighted, if not a little surprise to be proved wrong and welcomed the arrival of a new star on the heavyweight scene.

"I'm a little bit surprised," he said.

"I thought he was following the tactics that we all knew would win the fight a little bit too much to the letter and he wasn't getting enough punches off.

"I thought they could've done with the gunslinging tactics a little more but they got the decision and that's all that matters. A new era is dawning and it's David Haye's time."

Valuev was left swinging at fresh air for the vast majority of the evening as Haye proved as elusive as everyone had predicted, but the Bermondsey man's own attacking threat was depleted early when he sustained an injury to his right hand in round three.

Nicky Piper had backed Haye to knock Valuev out in the middle rounds but revealed he had scored in favour of Valuev.

But he admitted that even back-pedalling, the better man had won on the night.

"I had Valuev winning it by two rounds because I didn't think Haye was working hard enough. His stamina was lacking. If he did hurt his right hand then he has a genuine excuse.

"I think if he'd have worked harder throughout the fight he could've knocked him out. He's clearly the better fighter."

All three pundits though, were full of enthusiasm over where Haye goes from here.

Trainer Adam Booth and darling of British boxing Ricky Hatton have both backed the Londoner to become one of the sport's biggest stars and McCrory couldn't agree more.

"I think this is what the world wanted," he said.

"David's in the right place and the right time, says the right things, looks the right way and there are some big money fights out there for him. All of a sudden the heavyweight division has a star and is lit up."

Jim Watt, at ringside, agreed with the consensus in the studio that the Briton was fortunate to be handed the title.

"I didn't think he did enough to win the fight," he said. "I thought the rounds were decided on one of two punches and that not many were landed.

"The judges must have appreciated his defensive boxing. But I'm delighted - I think it's the best thing that could happen to the heavyweight division. Massive time now for heavyweight boxing - thanks to David Haye."

John Ruiz is Haye's mandatory challenger and turned in a good performance in stopping Turk Adnan Serin in seven.

All the talk now is bound to centre around a unification bout with either of the Klitschko brothers, but Watt believes the Quiet Man would be the perfect foe for a fighter who still only has three heavyweight fights behind him.

"That (Ruiz) would be a good fight," he said.

"He's a full-blown heavyweight, he's a good tactician and that's a fight we can look forward to. It'd be wonderful if it was in London."

Nick Berry says...

This is aimed at all those who have left negative comments. Yet again, our own talent is put down, criticised and abused for being successful. Haye was giving away 7 stone in weight. Valulev was almost 1 foot taller and 43% heavier. Do you think Haye was going to stand toe to toe with that. None of you could do that for 12 seconds, never mind 12 rounds. What makes this all the sweeter for Haye is he got the decision in Germany. We all know our fighters have been robbed over their over the years, ie Robin Reid etc. Sad day when the 1st heavy weight champ in 6 years for the UK gets no credit.

to all the people who are calling this a joke and a fix, you need to take your heads for a shake as you clearly know nothing about boxing. boxing isn't simply about knocking the other guy out, its about the skills and tactics needed to out wit your opponent. haye couldn't simply walk into the ring and stayed in one place, that would have been careless and he would have been trampled upon. neither fighter had many clean hits but haye made valuev look amatuer in the fact that everytime valuev went for the punch haye was simply too fast. the fight was always going to be fought this way for haye, he had to keep moving and find an opening, and thats exactly what he did well done david, you did the country proud!

OMG how can anyone say that David Haye did not deserve th win, Valuev is 7ft 221/2stone. Haye could hardley g toe to toe with him?? But you honestley think Valuev Deserved to keep the Belt. Slow, Weak, Untalented, Unfit. Made ZERO effective punches. Valuev was a disgrace of a champion. David Haye was the only fighter to make any breakthrough with his punches, Oh yeh and he only had one hand.

People really don't know what there talking about here. David Executed the perfect gameplan he was in and out with great pace. The only reason he was saying he was going to knock him out before hand was to get the public interested which he did. Great Job Dave hope you gon to clear the divison up and shut up everyone who is putting you down, as they clearly havent got a clue.

Well done David Haye. Tactics were perfect for the opponent. I imagine it wasn't how he'd preferred to have won, but conceding so much in height and weight, plus damaging his hand early meant that this way the only way to win. Looking forward to seeing him in "proper" fights now that the circus has left town. He'll destroy Ruiz inside 6 rounds. Jim Watt is an idiot - his comments pre-fight were totally negative and disrespectful given what Haye has already achieved. Sky need to get a decent commentator to work alongside Darke and shelve the miserable relic that is Jim Watt. Ian Darke I have a lot of time for and his commentary is usually very good, but he needs to stand his ground instead of agreeing with Watt all the time who is clearly stuck in a time warp.

How can people say that all Haye did was run away, people are forgettin that haye was boxing with one hand after round two, haye runnin round was a great tactical decision and it was spur of the moment as haye said himself he would have gone all out if he hadnt injured himself, and did noone see everytim haye caught valuev he was stunned and didnt have a clue how to react!what a champion and its well deserved!!!!

Adam Whiteley says...

This is amazing for british and heavyweight boxing, just amazing, someone with a bit of personality about them has come along at last and did what he had to do. ive followed haye for years now, and yes ok, if where all honest he dont have nothing of the poularity that say a hatton, bruno or a lewis had, but that will come in time. so now, on to the fight, it was always going to be a game of cat n mouse wasnt it, big v small, quick v slow, runner v plodder, call it what u will, haye easy laded the more productive punches and combinations, and ok they never really hurt valuev till the last, they did enough to score him the rounds valuev was hitting fresh air all night, prob landed 5 good hits all evening, and its jus not enough, and lets be honest, valuev has had some dubiouse decisions go his way, and maybe the judges run out of patiance, and saw that actually this valuev is no good afterall, bring on the klitchos, clean them up haye

Gari Jones says...

Great night of fighting was chuffed to see Haye win. If only he hadn't hurt his right hand my prediction of a 7th Round KO might have happened, david was landing those one two combo's until he hurt his hand. H erocked the big man in the last round and it wasn't all that clean a hit. Haye is champion now now for the Russian Brothers

Ross Cooper says...

Am I missing something here, surely the idea of boxing is to hit and not get hit.I think Haye did this perfectly,I know it wasn't the most exciting fight in the world but I was still on the edge of my seat.I can't believe all the negative comments on here,he is BRITISH and WORLD CHAMPION,how about some respect and patriotism!!!

Morgan O sullivan says...

I was hoping David would win,but I really don't think he done enough to win on points.I think the 'powers that be', would have given the belt to anyone that would have lasted the distance against Valuev,he's not a good image for boxing!! Haye landed a few good punches in the last round, other than that I couldn't see why he got the win.As usual if your different, they just don't want to know you.Its a disgrace.

Daniel W says...

Haye landed pretty much all the meaningful shots in the fight. If there's ever a rematch with Valuev he could definitely afford to be more agressive. Haye would win much more convincingly. Probably KO the big guy. Valuev had little to offer aside from plodding forward.

Eric Guy says...

David is the World champ!!! thats all that matters, winning by KO /Points/Cuts, it dont matter, he is..... THE BRITISH WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP!!! Makes me proud :)

Ryan Doyle says...

It was a close fight but all you people who thought that russian thing won are clearly stupid! Haye didnt get hit how can u lose if you dont get hit? he was making little combos here and there to grab the round may i add with a injured hand. Very skillful planned out performance well deserved victory, better than that giant throwing a jab whole time that is boring ladies and gentlemen get off his back World Champion now, if dont like it then dont watch it again. GENIUS HAYE

David Bland says...

Really pleased that the Hayemaker got the decision, but i dont know how he got a four point decision by 2 of the 3 judges!! Both fighters landed very few clean punches and most rounds (apart from the 12th) were too close to call. The heavyweight division needed this result so badly but i still question whether Haye did enough to win the belt on the night......nevertheless he was given the verdict and now the world has a charasmatic champion to be excited by.....

Paul Fraser says...

i think david haye shouldnt have won that belt i think they stole from the big guy i wonder what would happin if a rematch was to take place the russian would win it back thats my oppinion

Liam Owen says...

i think its a disgrace to the sport and to david haye himself, going into the fight he was punching card board cut outs and screaming "ill knock you out", in the actual fight he was basically a mouse running away and i couldnt honestly believe he won on points. something fishies going on if you ask me

Posted 20:27 8th November 2009

Neil Jones says...

What fight did you all watch? He was soooo boring! No way did he deserve to win, everyone but the judges had it 3 points to Valuev, so how did the judges manage to find 7 points difference to everyone else???? Haye spent the entire fight running away.... i'm not saying Valuev was fantastic, but he was consistent.... the only thing that was consistent for Haye was that the result was rubbish, and so was he!

Posted 20:24 8th November 2009

Paul Clews says...

What a fix, I'd say you could have won strictly come dancing but no boxing belt with that preformance. I think to take a champs belt you have to beat him not dance better than him. Very poor, how long can David hold onto this belt, and whats the betting it go's to an American, we all saw Don King taking a large part in proceedings.

Posted 20:11 8th November 2009

Steve Anderson says...

I think David Haye should thank Don 'the corruptor' King for putting up enough money to bribe 2 of the judges. So much for Haye going in and knocking Valuev out to prove he was the best fighter. All i could think of was the Carry on film where the weedy one was in the ring and kept running round and round the ring to stop himself from being hit, then throwing the occasional punch. Joe Calzaghe broke his hand a couple of times but he STILL threw punches. How long before Haye does a Khan and decides it's 'too stressful' to stay in the UK. Valuev, in my own opinion won the fight by 1 round. Unfortunately Valuev isn't a money maker for King due to his age, height and looks, whereas Haye has the qualities to be a money maker. King said at the start that Haye had no chance but after the fight the Dollar signs were flashing in BOTH Haye and King's eyes. I thought it was dodgy when Haye pulled out of the Klitchko fight a couple of weeks before the fight, just in time for the news about Setanta going bust. Next fight is Ruiz as mandatory defence. Then it will be a Klitchko fight which HOPEFULLY Haye won't be able to back out of.

Posted 19:38 8th November 2009

Rex Barnard says...

A perfect fight from David Haye. Why no punch count? The stats would have shown the number thrown massively in Valuevs favour but the ones that matter (and count for points Jim Watt) hugely in favour of David. A credit to this country (obviously not Jim Watt!!!).
