Raising the Ba

Ray Wilkins - Ray Wilkins Posted 30th December 2012 view comments

Ray Wilkins believes the signing of Demba Ba would help to ignite Chelsea's title challenge this season.

The former Blues assistant manager was in the Sky Sports studio when the news broke that the Newcastle striker was set to hold talks with Stamford Bridge representatives over a possible January move.

Ba is believed to have a £7million release clause in his contract and Wilkins says that would represent good value for a proven goalscorer, especially if they manage to offload Daniel Sturridge to Liverpool for an even higher transfer fee.

Wilkins said: "He's a goalscorer and he's done exceptionally well this year with 13 goals already.

"He's available in January at £7million. I know that's a lot of money, but in footballing terms for him, somebody who scores goals, it's not.

"Daniel Sturridge is going to Liverpool, supposedly, for £12m so the pound's in for Chelsea with a guy that can score goals at the top level."

He was speaking as Chelsea secured an impressive 2-1 victory at Everton with both goals coming from Frank Lampard, who is out of contract this summer.

Wilkins feels Rafael Benitez should try to keep hold of the England midfielder and he said his value to the team was underlined once again at Goodison Park.

He added: "Whenever they need a goal he pops up, he's Johnny on the spot.

"He scored two goals again today, invaluable goals, and you don't see him score too many headers but the first was an absolutely fantastic finish. It was pretty textbook, heading it back where it came from.

"Who's on the end of it? It's Frank. That's what he's been doing for the last 10 or 11 years.

"The man on the end of it is the man they're about to get rid of. Supposedly Frank's on his way, but what Frank will always do is pop up and score you a goal."
