Football League finale set to thrill, says David Jones

Remember the old adage about the Championship? The only thing predictable about it is its unpredictability.

That's never been truer than this season and there's so much yet to be decided as we approach the final decisive day of action.

Cardiff and Bristol City are just about the only two teams sure of their fate - one going up, the other going down - while a glut of teams still chase promotion and scrap for survival.

Watford: Can they dash into the automatic promotion spots?

Watford: Can they dash into the automatic promotion spots?

Joining Cardiff in the automatic promotion places will be Hull or Watford; these were the two sides I first remember covering in play-off action in my first season presenting football league coverage for Sky Sports.

Then it was Aidy Boothroyd's Hull, favourites to find a way past the Tigers marshalled by Phil Brown.

Realistically six teams still face filling the final two relegation spots - one from five unless Wolves pull off a miracle.

The FF Show

6pm & 10pm, Thu, Sky Sports 1 HD

Hull had the momentum, brushed aside Watford and edged past Bristol City in the final.

Momentum

So often, the play-offs are about that magic word momentum and on that basis if Forest or Bolton can gate crash the play off party on Saturday they would be hotly fancied to make it all the way to the Barclays Premier League.

Palace have now failed to win in nine league games - only Millwall and relegated City have worse form of late - and what a shame it would be if they dropped out of the pack at this late stage.

But they face Peterborough who I'd love to see stay up having battled against the odds all season, and not once diverted from the plan set down by their colourful chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

Realistically six teams still face filling the final two relegation spots - one from five unless Wolves pull off a miracle.

I for one can't wait for Saturday to come, and before that the Football League play-offs kick off on Thursday night.

This week's The Footballers Football Show will serve as an hors d'ouvre to the play-offs on Thursday with Neil Warnock, Lee Clark and Peter Beagrie who's seen more matches than he's had hot dinners - and that's a lot!

See you then.
