Pineau De Re, the 2014 Grand National winner, has been retired.

The 13-year-old was pulled up at Uttoxeter on Saturday and trainer Dr Richard Newland said afterwards that he felt that time had come to call it a day.

"He was disappointing today but only recently he'd run a cracker in the Scottish National," he said.

"It's time to draw stumps, now is the right time. He ran today as Uttoxeter is his owner John Provan's local track.

"He's still in great shape and we'll look to retrain him. My wife and daughters have plenty of experience of doing that sort of thing and I'm sure they'll do a good job.

"Aintree was a great day, one we'll never forget. The main race you want to win when you are involved in racing is the Grand National.

"He was bought specifically for the race so to go and win it was very special indeed.
