A daring French raid by Philip Hobbs saw Garde La Victoire finish second in the Listed Prix Claude Le Lorrain at Auteuil.
Hobbs sent the Diana Whateley-owned eight-year-old overseas in search of some euro but he was beaten two lengths by Azucardel in the hands of Richard Johnson.
The winner, trained by Gabriel Leenders and ridden by Clement Lefebvre, had finished fourth behind two of the best horses in France, Device and Alex De Larredya, at Auteuil last month.
