Ribbons run hinges on ground

Connections of Group One-winning filly Ribbons are praying for rain in Paris ahead of her intended run in Sunday's Prix de l'Opera at Longchamp.

Having been off the track since a narrow defeat in an Ascot handicap in May, the James Fanshawe-trained four-year-old was a surprise but brilliant winner of the Prix Jean Romanet in testing ground at Deauville last month, when ridden by Frankie Dettori.

She is due to cross the Channel in search of another big prize this weekend, but Dan Downie, racing manager for owners the Elite Racing Club, has warned she will only make the trip if there is some ease underfoot.

"She worked well last weekend and is in good form, so it's all systems go as long as the ground is suitable," said Downie.

"We're obviously keeping a close eye on the weather and it goes without saying any rain that they get in Paris would be very useful.

"I think we'll just have to take a view nearer declaration time. Having looked after her all year, I don't think we'll be doing anything stupid and risking her on ground that is too fast.

"It is very rare that the ground does get fast at Longchamp, but the forecast is largely dry, I believe, so we'll just have to see how things work out."

If the team decide against a tilt at this weekend's Group One contest, it appears likely Ribbons will be roughed off for the remainder of the campaign.

Downie said: "If she doesn't run there isn't an awful lot left for her this season. I think we'll take her out of the big race at Ascot (British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes, October 18) as at this stage, we're keen to stick to a mile and a quarter rather than stepping up to a mile and a half. She has a good turn of foot.

"She will stay in training next year."
