A statue of five-time Ascot winner Frankel was unveiled by the Queen

A statue of five-time Ascot winner Frankel was unveiled by the Queen on the opening day of this year's Royal meeting.

Trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil, Frankel retired unbeaten following a 14-race career in October 2012 which culminated in the Champion Stakes. The bronze was created by sculptor Mark Coreth.

Lady Cecil and owner Khalid Abdullah's racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe were among those present.

Lady Cecil said: "Ascot played a special part in Frankel's career as five of his 14 wins came at the course. It is fitting that such a magnificent statue will stand at the course to celebrate his achievements.

"Mark Coreth has captured the presence, power and strength of Frankel. I cannot imagine a more fitting or appropriate testament to his talent."

The statue is one of a set of four, with the others to be sited at the National Museum of Horse Racing, Newmarket, York Racecourse and Banstead Manor Stud, where Frankel stands as a stallion.

Grimthorpe said: "It is a wonderful likeness which has captured both his looks and his energy."

Ascot chief executive Guy Henderson said: "It is entirely appropriate that his statue will be amongst the crowds who visit Ascot through the year, and looking at the winner's podium."

Coreth said: "It was an honour to be asked to create this sculpture of this extraordinary horse. The creative process was a delight and the sculpture tries to capture the power and vitality of Frankel."
