Roger Charlton: Double-handed in Arc Trial

Roger Charlton is under no illusions about the task facing Al Kazeem and Sea Of Heartbreak in an exciting renewal of the Dubai Duty Free Arc Trial at Newbury.

The three-year-old Al Kazeem is a dual course winner and will meet his elders for the first time off the back of an excellent second to Sea Moon in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York.

Charlton is unsure whether to take that form literally, but either way, he feels his charge has plenty on his plate this weekend.

"Al Kazeem has progressed," said Charlton. "It's hard to be definite about the form of the Great Voltigeur, as I think the ground may have affected some horses.

"But if it was true form, it was a very encouraging run and probably under-assessed by the handicapper.

"He got the trip very well and although he was off the bridle a few furlongs out, he stayed on very well.

"That race was his first run since early May and I would hope he will strip fitter for it and has progressed.

"I hope he's improving. He has run all his races at Newbury apart from his last one, but this is a tough ask.

"Dangerous Midge hasn't run since Dubai, where he ran badly, but if he's back to his best they've all got to go to catch him.

"Green Destiny is obviously an improving horse as well, so we'll see what happens."

Sea Of Heartbreak won a Listed race on her latest visit to the Berkshire venue and Charlton hopes to use the race as a springboard to a trip across the Atlantic.

"On the ratings there is very little between them and it's unfortunate to have to run two in the same race," the trainer continued.

"I'm hoping Sea Of Heartbreak would be a possible for the EP Taylor Stakes at Woodbine in the middle of October, in which case she needs to have a prep race before that.

"She runs well at Newbury and she deserves another chance at a Group Three, but it's a tough call.

"The faster the ground the better for her, but there is a forecast of rain.

"If it happened to get very soft, I'd probably scratch her and consider running her in a Listed race at Newmarket next week."
