First Avenue: Needs a quiet ride

First Avenue warms up for a run at Glorious Goodwood with a trip to Lingfield on Wednesday for the Paul Kelleway Memorial Handicap.

Last season's Imperial Cup winner put up a fine performance when a close fourth to Chiberta King in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot on his latest outing on the level.

He has come out of that race in such tip-top shape that trainer Laura Mongan feels another run is needed ahead of the Goodwood Handicap over two miles and five furlongs in two weeks' time.

The Cesarewitch in October could be another target before his attention is switched back to the jumps.

"It was a really good run at Ascot, we were over the moon with him," said Mongan.

"We were saving him for the staying handicap at Goodwood, but he kind of tells us when he needs a run, so we thought it might be a good chance tomorrow for him to get his head in front and give him confidence to go to Goodwood.

"He's quite versatile. Any race over two miles plus he seems to run his race. He's in such good heart at the moment it would be wrong not to give him a run. We're hopeful of a good run and he never lets us down.

"He probably won't go back over hurdles until the Ladbroke in December, hopefully. We'll have this race tomorrow, then we'll go to Goodwood and we might go for the Cesarewitch then that would be it on the Flat for the year until hurdling."

First Avenue will be partnered for the first time by 7lb claimer Aaron Chave.

"He works for me and has only been with us six weeks," said Mongan. "This horse runs well for claimers. He needs a quiet ride, someone just to sit there and steer."
