Goulanes pips Cross Kennon at Cheltenham
David Pipe and Tom Scudamore didn't have long to dwell upon the disappointing performance of Grands Crus in the Paddy Power Gold Cup as Goulanes took the following race.
Owner Roger Brookhouse may have given his chequebook a bashing at the sales at the racecourse after racing on Friday, but he enjoyed a return on his investment as Goulanes thrived for the move up to three miles-plus.
The 7/1 winner had to dig deep to get the better of the game Cross Kennon in the final strides, but gamely stuck his head out in response to Scudamore's urgings.
"We didn't have any doubts over the soft ground for him as he is a real staying chaser in the making," said Pipe. "It will be up to his owner but he might even go over fences this season."
