Mark Johnston enhanced his fine record at Glorious Goodwood as Drumfire came out on top in a tight finish to the Paul Goes The Extra Mile Stakes.

The 8-1 chance travelled strongly towards the head of affairs under Jimmy Fortune and engaged in a battle with Royal Destination a furlong from home.

Just as he was getting the better of that argument, Drumfire had to contend with fast-finishing favourite Sweet Lightning but he found plenty for pressure to score by half a length.

Fortune said: "He's a great big horse, when I ride him I look small and I look big on most things.

"He took a bit of time to wind up but I was pretty confident from a long way out."

Johnston said: "It's great to start like this as it doesn't always happen and let's hope it continues.

"He's a very classy horse, he always has been, right back to his two-year-old days.

"It's a great consolation for him to win here as he had a very nasty fall a couple of years ago that nearly ended his career.

"He's been running in better company than this though and I told Jimmy to ride him as such, as I was really confident that he was at the top of his form."
