Good Memory Lands Albany

Memory wins under Hughes.

Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes continued their excellent run of form at Royal Ascot as Memory gave the pair a third winner of the week in the Albany Stakes.

Sent off at 15-2 following a debut victory at Goodwood a month ago, the juvenile did not get off to the best of starts and Hughes was forced to employ waiting tactics.

Having travelled strongly in the early part of the race, the daughter of Danehill Dancer showed an impressive change of gear once asked to go about her business and got up in the shadow of the post to score by a head from Hayley Turner on Margot Did.

Of her tardy start, Hannon said: "This filly never hits the gate, she never has done and there's no real point in buzzing her up to jump the gate.

"They might as well let her do her own thing. Once she gets rolling she's a pretty decent filly. She's only little, but she's good.

"She's a funny filly. Sometimes you work her in between a couple and she doesn't work very well, but when she comes to the races she knows her job.

"She's such a lovely mover. She does her own thing, which is good enough."

Hughes added: "At Goodwood I jumped and she landed on all fours and she wouldn't go for it, so I just sat on her and let her come good.

"She's done exactly the same thing today and if you bully her she won't go and you have to accept it.

"She'll get a mile standing on her head. She needed every yard of the six furlongs today.

"The filly I beat was going exceptionally well at the two pole and in the end I outstayed her."

The runner-up's trainer Michael Bell said: "I'm very happy with her and she's been a revelation since we bought her for £10,000 on April 30.

"She has speed and is very genuine, I think she's got a great future ahead.

"The winner would have been an unlucky loser if she'd got beat.

"We'll see how she comes out of the race, but the Cherry Hinton would be a possibility."

American raider Tiz My Time ran a fine race to finish third and her trainer Kenny McPeek was thrilled.

"She ran very well and we always felt she was a good filly," he said.

"She'd taken on a couple of decent American sprinters on her two runs back home and has been training well on my grass gallops.

"I thought she would show up well and she did. Running her was more of a test to see what type of fillies and colts I need for the future and what has happened this week has given me a good feel for that."

Memory was giving Highclere Thoroughbred Racing their second winner of the week following Approve's victory on Thursday's Norfolk Stakes, and racing manager Harry Herbert has identified a couple of potential targets.

"I would say she will probably go for the Cherry Hinton and then the Moyglare would have to come under very serious consideration," said Herbert.
