Sweet Bassett Lands Monster Pot

Galtymore Lad and Wootton Bassett battle it out.

Wootton Bassett (2-1 favourite) maintained his unbeaten record with a battling success in the Weatherbys Insurance £300,000 2-Y-O Stakes.

Richard Fahey had resisted the temptation to make the jump into Pattern company with his Iffraaj colt and his owners, Frank Brady & The Cosmic Cases, are now better off to the tune of another £190,000.

Having also won a big sales race at York last month, it was his old adversary from that day, Galtymore Lad, who made him pull out all the stops on 8lb better terms.

But the Fahey youngster responded to all Paul Hanagan's urgings to win by a length with his stablemate Premier Clarets third.

Fahey said: "He must have improved since York as the second was a lot better off at the weights and we've beaten him again.

"Paul felt the York race had done him a lot of good and he's a horse with so much speed, but we can hold on to him better now.

"We'll have a look at the race in France on Arc day over seven furlongs (Jean-Luc Lagardere) and also the Middle Park, but we'll get him home and see how he is.

"He saw it out well at the end and his dam won over a mile and a quarter so you'd like to think he'll stay a bit further.

Hanagan added: "When Kieren (Fallon) came and headed me it did him a lot of good as my horse went again.

"He's just an unbelievable horse. He's done it really well and he came into the winner's enclosure like he hadn't had a race."

Mick Channon said of the runner-up: "He ran his race, but the winner must be a very good horse.

"We'll go back over six furlongs with him as he had him beat at six here and last time.

"We'll see how he is and try to find a race where the winner isn't."
