Mark Johnston combined with Frankie Dettori to land a big gamble in the 32 Red Trophy at Newmarket.

The race better known as the Bunbury Cup is one of the major betting heats of the season and San Moritz had been backed into as short as 4-1 favourite after a fine third in the Royal Hunt Cup last time.

Dettori decided to stick to the stands side and gradually wound St Moritz up and his determined finish saw him pass Palace Moon and collect by a neck.

Johnston said: "There had been a lot of debate over where the fastest ground was, but Frankie chose the stands rail and he was aways well in command.

"The owners are breeders and we'd like to step out of handicap company and find a Pattern race if we can. Seven furlongs or a mile is fine for him."

William Knight, trainer of Palace Moon, said: "He has been third at Ascot and second here so hopefully we can go one better in the rest of the season.

"There are no excuses but if he had been drawn better he might have won."
