Premio Loco is used to Group-race success on the continent but has found the winning ticket nearer to home too and he stepped up to the plate under a daring George Baker ride in the totesport.com Summer Mile at Ascot.

Chris Wall's six-year-old is thriving with age and followed up last month's Criterion Stakes win at Newmarket for his first British Group Two triumph.

The 4-1 chance was still towards the rear with two furlongs left to run, but Baker threaded a needle up the rail and survived a couple of bumps to deny French raider Vertigineux and 5-2 favourite Dream Eater by a length and a neck.

Wall said: "He is tough and had to go through a narrow gap to win at Goodwood last year, so I had no worries about the horse or jockey being brave.

"He is not in the Sussex Stakes, but deserves a shot at a Group One now having won a Group Two.

"There is also the Prix Jacques le Marios and the Moulin and if we can avoid Goldikova and Paco Boy then who knows."

The stewards took a dim view of Baker's race-winning dash and suspended him for four days (July 25-27 and 29) for careless riding.
