Rewilding - ran a fine Leger trial.

Godolphin's Rewilding ran out a hugely impressive winner of the Sportingbet.com Great Voltigeur Stakes.

Last seen coming home to good effect in third place in the Derby, Mahmood Al Zarooni's colt was always travelling beautifully in the hands of Frankie Dettori.

They went a good gallop up front, with Harris Tweed at the head of affairs, and Johnny Murtagh was keen not to let him get too far clear on Midas Touch.

However, Dettori moved stealthily up to challenge inside the final two furlongs and despite Joshua Tree also making eyecatching headway, there was only ever going to be one winner.

Sent off the 6-4 favourite, Rewilding had four lengths to spare over Midas Touch, with Joshua Tree third and Ted Spread fourth.

Dettori said: "It was a tremendous race, we went a very strong gallop and the time was good.

"It takes him a bit of time to warm up, but four furlongs out there was only one winner.

"I was very pleased with him.

"We've said all along he's a perfect Leger horse, this is the best trial and we can go there with plenty of confidence.

"He's calm and the trip is no problem."

Godolphin's racing manager Simon Crisford said: "We knew his Derby run was good enough to win this race.

"He was a little bit under-cooked coming here, but he's gone and done it well.

"He had quite a hard race at Epsom and it took quite a bit out of him, so it was always the plan to miss Goodwood and come straight for this.

"We went to Epsom thinking we might be able to win, but he was ultimately no match for Workforce and the track didn't suit him.

"He's a horse who has enough class to run over a mile and a quarter, but he'll go for the Leger and he must have a favourite's chance."

Aidan O'Brien said of Midas Touch and Joshua Tree: "We're delighted with them both.

"You'd love to be thinking about the Leger next time with them."

Mark Tompkins is another setting his sights on the final Classic and said of Ted Spread: "We're delighted with him and the ground was just fast enough.

"That was a great Leger trial and that was always the plan."

Sky Bet make the winner a 6-4 chance for the St Leger with Midas Touch out to 6-1.
