Owner Evan Sutherland claimed to be taken aback by the gambled-on success of Pittodrie Star in the Best Odds Guaranteed At mobile.williamhill.com Handicap.

Andrew Balding's gelding had winning form on the Polytrack surface and he was backed-in from 13-2 to 4-1.

Pertuis had skipped clear at the two furlongs out but David Probert drove Pittodrie Star down the centre of the track and he pulled three lengths clear at the line.

"He always seems to be gambled - maybe it's the Aberdeen fans!" said Sutherland, who spent many years as a student in the Scottish city and was referring to the horse's name, which refers to the football club's home ground.

"Although he's by Choisir, he has a lot of stamina on the dam's side and I always thought he wanted more of a trip."
