Nagham and Charles The Great do battle at Newbury.
Charles The Great ran out a narrow winner of the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury.
Charles The Great, trained by Andrew Balding, ran out a narrow winner of the valuable five furlong sales race at the Berkshire venue from the fast-finishing Lily's Angel.
Always to the fore, the Holy Roman Emperor Colt who had finished down the field in the Norfolk Stakes at Rotal Ascot on his latest start, bounced back to score by a short-head in the cavalry charge.
Ridden by Jimmy Fortune, he only had a short-head in hand of Richard Fahey's Lily's Angel at the line with Nagham a half length back in third.
"We like these races," said Balding.
"He lost a shoe at Ascot and just needs his own space so we thought he would prefer it out in front, as he made all the running at Windsor.
"He is not 100% straight-forward, but he has lots of toe.
"I'm really happy with him, he's in several of the big Tattersalls Millions races at Newmarket and he will be suited by the step up to six furlongs."
Kennet Valley manager Nick Robinson added: "We bought four yearlings last year and three of them have run in this race.
"We have won, finished fourth and Airborne Again should be better over further so it couldn't be much better.
"Ryan Moore said Redact got carried across, and he thinks he could be a Group horse."
Paul Hanagan said of the Richard Fahey-trained Lily's Angel: "I had to sit and suffer and in another two strides I would have got there. It was a fine effort over five furlongs."
