Tangerine Trees had just enough left in the tank.
Tangerine Trees won the Group Three Pearl Bloodstock Palace House Stakes at Newmarket.
Bryan Smart's Tangerine Trees made every yard to gain a first success in Group company. The six year old appeared to have all his rivals struggling with a furlong to run but started to tire in the closing stages and had just enough in hand to fend off the late challenge of Rain Delayed who had scythed through the field from almost last place.
Sole Power, a shock 100-1 winner of the Nunthorpe last season, had tried to race in the winner's slip-dream and kept on well to share third place with Jonny Mudball who was stepping up from handicap company.
Partnered by Tom Eaves, the winner started last season winning from a mark of just 69 but ended the season rated 103 following a course and distance success from Tax Free in October.
The son of Mind Games maintained his remarkable progression with this successful first foray at Group level.
Smart said: "He's a proper horse this and he's got bags of speed. I think he could go all the way.
"He's entered in the King's Stand at Royal Ascot and we'll have a look at the Temple Stakes, but he's not a horse you want to run too much.
"He's not stopped improving and I think there could be a bit more left.
"The horse has a race named after him at Hamilton on Sunday as he's won there four times."
