Prairie Star pipped Grand Vent by a nose in a thrilling Group Two Prix Hocquart at Longchamp.

Trained by Elie Lellouche, the Peintre Celebre colt was settled in second place for most of the race by jockey Christophe Soumillon.

The Belgian challenged for the lead with two furlongs to run and held on in a driving finish from the fast-finishing runner-up, with both horses sent off at 11-4.

Andre Fabre's Grand Vent was held up last by Mickael Barzalona but made up ground off the turn for home and was gaining with every stride but just lost out on the nod.

Frankie Dettori was able to set his own fractions on the Mahmood Al Zarooni-trained Genius Beast however he couldn't shake off his rivals at the furlong pole and was soundly beaten a length and a half further back in third.

Soumillon told www.paris-turf.com: "He was always travelling well and when I asked him to go on, he pulled out five or six strides.

"It was a good performance and he think he may be better over a mile and a half."

Of Genius Beast, Godolphin manager racing manager Simon Crisford told www.godolphin.com: "Genius Beast obviously stays very well and will remain entered in everything.

"But Sheikh Mohammed is leaning towards the Group Two King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, though at this stage nothing is ruled in or out."
