The searching stamina test in the Queen Alexandra Stakes proved ideal for John Dunlop's Swingkeel who ground out a determined victory.

Ted Durcan was hard at work a long way from home on the 11-2 chance but his perseverence was handsomely reward.

Elyaadi, the 4-1 favourite, took a couple of lengths out of the field soon after but Swingkeel, third in the race 12 months ago, saw out the two miles and five furlongs best to score by three and a half lengths.

Dunlop said: "It's lovely to win and he's a grand old horse who stays very well.

"He ran a good race last year in the same race.

"He went jumping through the winter and won a little novice hurdle.

"One was obviously apprehensive with the way the ground was, but he stays well and Ted gave him a lovely ride."
