Ancient Cross won his second race of the season as he comfortably landed the Deloitte Gosforth Park Cup.

Mick Easterby's seven-year-old had already come out on top last month at York and he showed he was still on the upgrade with a good turn of foot to take command just inside the distance.

He soon went clear of his rivals under Graham Gibbons and posted victory by one and three quarter lengths over Noodles Blue Boy with Verinco third.

Mon Brav was a late plunge into favouritism but never really looked like landing a blow from the rear division over this five-furlong trip.

"He showed a lot of speed there and he picked up really well," said Gibbons.

"I got there too soon really but the gaps were there and he was going well.

"There's more to come."

Part-owner Steve Hull added: "Mick has been running him over the wrong trip, he was convinced he was a seven-furlong horse but he's obviously not now.

"He's won that off 95 so we'll be looking at races like the Stewards' Cup hopefully, or maybe even Listed races."
