Red Duke: Superlative winner
Red Duke won the 32Red.com Superlative Stakes at Newmarket under a confident ride from Kieren Fallon.
The colt had caught the eye at Pontefract on debut before obliging in a Redcar maiden and he made light of the step up to Group 2 level on this occasion.
Always chasing the leaders, the son of Hard Spun looked to be travelling particularly well and as Fallon steered his mount out from a rail position, he gave readily to defy Chandlery by a neck.
Richard Hannon's charge came to win his race having followed a frenetic early pace set by Pearl Mix and Sehnsucht in the early stages but had no answer to the winner.
Silverheels proved his flop in the Norfolk Stakes to be all wrong and was a creditable third whilst Fort Bastion caught the eye with a staying on fifth from an unpromising position at half way.
John Lightbody had proved particularly popular in the market beforehand but having started modestly, he never travelled and Silverstre de Sousa was always fighting a losing battle.
Fallon said: "He got good speed figures for his Redcar win and I liked him today.
"He idled a bit when he got to the front and I think there's a lot to come.
"He stepped up in class, he's building in confidence and hopefully it will continue."
Quinn said: "I knew I had a good one, but I needed a good one as we haven't had much for the last couple of years.
"I had a big clearout and I think I've got some nice young horses.
"He's a Group winner now and we'll go home and think about what we do next. I hope he's a Guineas horse. You have to dream, dont you?"
