Dubawi Gold: Back to his best
Dubawi Gold returned to form to comfortably claim the Betfair Celebration Mile at Goodwood.
Richard Hannon's charge came with a withering late run to win the Group Two contest by half a length from Set The Trend but was good value for more than the winning margin.
The son of Dubawi had progressed rapidly at the start of the season, finishing second in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and at the Curragh but had then disappointed at Royal Ascot.
He returned to action a fortnight ago after a summer break and finished fourth in the Hungerford Stakes behind Excelebration and connections had cause to celebrate following this impressive success.
Set The Trend kept on well for second with the consistent Beacon Lodge in third but favourite Poet's Voice proved disappointing on his first run since the Dubai World Cup in March.
"He ran too free at Newbury and didn't settle," said Hannon.
"I enjoyed that - it's what keeps you racing.
"I suppose we might look at the QEII but he'll probably go for the Prix du Moulin for his next race."
Connections of the Andrew Balding-trained runner-up suggested the Prix Daniel Wildenstein as a potential target.
