Petara Bay (near side) gets up at Goodwood
Petara Bay won an eventful Toyo Tires Summer Handicap at Glorious Goodwood as Captain John Nixon broke down in the straight and brought down two horses.
Chris Catlin was making the running on Captain John Nixon when he had to be swiftly pulled up, with Activate and Verdant brought down by the stricken horse.
Jamie Spencer and Ryan Moore were both attended to as the race came to its conclusion, with Petara Bay (12-1) beating Icon Dream (8-1) and Investissement (14-1).
Moore was later reported to have suffered a suspected shoulder injury and he was forced to miss the ride on Crystal Capella in the Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes.
Moore was taken to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester for further treatment.
Mills said of Petara Bay: "A two-mile trip is really his optimum, but I was more concerned about the ground.
"It was perfect at the beginning of the week but it was not changing in our favour.
"He is a half-brother to Nathaniel and has a fantastic pedigree, but he has been plagued by injury.
"We have to treat him with kid gloves but there is no doubting he has an engine.
"Jim gave him a beautiful ride."
It was later confirmed that Captain John Nixon broke a foreleg and had to be put down.
