Opinion Poll: Edged out Duncan in thrilling battle
Frankie Dettori and Opinion Poll got the better of a sustained duel with Duncan (4-1) to win the Weatherbys Insurance Lonsdale Cup at York.
The 3-1 favourite was ridden off the pace through the early stages but joined issue with the leader at the two furlong pole.
They then did battle for the rest of the contest and while the Godolphin horse came out on top by three-quarters of a length, the pair bumped three times inside the final furlong.
A stewards enquiry was called but the placings remained unaltered.
Bergo (20-1) ran well in third.
Both Dettori and Mahmood Al Zarooni were completing quick doubles following Parlour Games' win in the Melrose.
The trainer said: "He won this last year and likes the ground and the course. The target for him is the Group Two race at Ascot on Champions Day.
"There's also the Doncaster Cup but the main target is Ascot and we'll see how he gets there."
John Gosden said of the runner-up: "I think he just got outstayed in the end by a very good stayer. My horse ran a really good race and I'm very happy with him."
Sky Bet cut the winner to 8-1 for next year's Ascot Gold Cup while Paddy Power are 10s.
