Tregoning: Trains Cavaleiro
Marcus Tregoning's Cavaleiro (11-1) won the Haynes, Hanson & Clark Conditions Stakes at Newbury on Friday.
The Lambourn handler has won the race four times before, including with Nayef in 2000, and he did so this time by lowering the colours of the well-touted Harvard N Yale (4-7 favourite).
Jeremy Noseda's market leader was always prominent and looked to be going well towards the business end of the one-mile contest.
However, Cavaleiro was travelling well in his slipstream and took it up under Richard Mullen inside the final furlong.
Harvard N Yale battled back well under George Baker but was a neck behind the winner at the finish line.
"We didn't care who he was by at the sales, but we wanted to buy him and it just happened he was by (Tregoning's Derby winner) Sir Percy," said the trainer.
"He's got stamina and speed and has a lot of experience already. We'll have to think carefully about whether we run him again. He's had a few races and I'd seriously suggest going into a trial of some sort next year. We'll play it by ear, but it's exciting."
